The limited meeting time couldn’t be wasted in silence like this.
Jiang Miaomiao asked the question she cared most about.
“How have you been these few days? What have they done to you?”
Lu Qiming lowered his head to compose himself, finally able to speak.
“I’m fine, they just did some simple tests. The formal experiments will still take some time.”
“Tests?” she asked anxiously, “Did they hurt you?”
“No, it didn’t hurt. How about you? Are you okay?”
Jiang Miaomiao was stunned, her eyes flickered for a moment, then she smiled even brighter.
“I’m good, I’m really good. Much better than I imagined.”
“Is that so? Tell me about it.”
She pursed her lips and described every detail of her life to him.
“I have a single room with heating and hot water. I can take a bath whenever I want, and I don’t have to worry about electricity. I don’t even have to cook for myself. There’s a cafeteria in the base, and everyone eats the same food, with meat in every meal.
They didn’t let me bring Jiang Rourou in, saying they were afraid of bacteria. Otherwise, I would show it to you; it has gained more weight.
Oh, by the way, I have started working. I’m at the kindergarten, accompanying the children to play. There are not many people, about twenty to thirty teachers taking care of over two hundred students. Their parents sacrificed during the retreat, and no one is taking care of them, so the government takes care of them.
My job is easy and basically like a paid vacation. The kindergarten even has its own separate cafeteria. If I don’t want to eat the cafeteria food, I can go to the small cafeteria. Everyone envies me so much.”
Lu Qiming listened with a faint smile, his gaze gently enveloping her like a soft breeze.
“Then I can rest assured.”
“Of course, you don’t need to worry about me at all, just take care of yourself.”
Jiang Miaomiao boasted for a while, then shifted her attention to him.
“How about you? What do you eat every day?”
He lowered his head slightly.
“I’m doing well too, as you can see, the laboratory is very clean and warm.
There are dedicated people taking care of my three meals a day, balancing nutrition and taste. I don’t have to do anything by myself. If I need anything, I just tell them, and someone will bring it to me immediately.
The only downside is that I can’t smoke; it will affect the test data. But I was planning to quit smoking anyway, so… everything is fine.”
He finished speaking before lifting his head, his eyes seemed tangible as they gently fell on her, like a soft goose feather.
Jiang Miaomiao held her dress hem.
“Um, that’s good, then I can rest assured… I… I…”
Suddenly, she raised her head, her eyes filled with tears. Her eyes widened, as if she didn’t want the tears to roll down.
Lu Qiming’s heart tightened instantly, and he asked very carefully, “What’s wrong?”
The emotions that had been held back since they met burst out like a flood.
“I miss you so much, I really miss you…”
Before she knew him, she could happily spend a month alone.
After knowing him, being apart for just a week was an enormous torment.
How long would this torment last?
Every day, when she returned home from work, all she faced was a cold and lifeless single bed and an uninviting dormitory.
If it weren’t for Jiang Rourou accompanying her, she wouldn’t have been able to hold on.
Jiang Miaomiao covered her face and cried, while Lu Qiming sat on the other side, feeling heartbroken and helpless as he watched her.
He really wanted to hug her and comfort her as before.
But the transparent glass separated them in two different worlds, not even allowing them to touch.
The meeting time quickly came to an end, and in just a few minutes, the staff opened the door to remind them.
“Miss Jiang, you should go back now. Mr. Lu needs to prepare for surgery.”
She suddenly looked up, “What surgery?”
“I’m sorry, I’m not quite sure about that.”
“Is Professor Chen Hong here? Can you ask him to come over?”
The person seemed hesitant, “Um…”
“Miaomiao.” Lu Qiming called her and stood up, “You should go back, we’ll meet again next time.”
Jiang Miaomiao stood in a daze, watching him leave the isolation room.
Next time… when will it be?
She needed to talk to Chen Hong about this.
Meeting only once a month was something she couldn’t accept.
Jiang Miaomiao found Chen Hong’s assistant and made the request to meet.
However, the assistant said he had gone out on an emergency. Someone in a rescue team got seriously injured, and the doctors were short-handed, so he had to go in person.
If she insisted on meeting, it was suggested to come back another day.
Jiang Miaomiao refused.
Everyone was busy every day, and who knew if they could meet next time they tried?
Since she didn’t start her work until the evening, she decided to wait in the laboratory until he came back.
Jiang Rourou was still at the front desk, so she went there first to get the dog and the preserved eggs, then sat on the steps at the entrance.
During this time, someone from the front desk came to ask her to leave first, and they would pass on any message if needed.
Jiang Miaomiao refused again and firmly stayed on the steps.
She just sat there without causing trouble, and the staff had no choice but to leave her alone and continue with their tasks.
Noon passed, but Chen Hong was still nowhere to be seen.
Jiang Rourou started to feel hungry and paced around anxiously.
Jiang Miaomiao pulled it over and rubbed its head.
“Wait a little longer, we’ll be able to go home soon, be good.”
Rourou lay down beside her, resting its chin on her foot with a pitiful look.
A few more hours passed, and Chen Hong was still missing.
Jiang Miaomiao checked the time, seeing that it was almost time for her to start work. She had to stand up and prepare to leave.
Just as she walked a few dozen meters away, someone suddenly chased after her from behind, grabbing her shoulder and asked hesitantly:
“Jiang Miaomiao?”
The voice was very familiar, she turned around, and indeed it was Gu Changzhou.
He seemed to have just returned from a mission, still wearing combat gear and bulletproof vest. There were some bloodstains on his clothes, not sure if it was his or someone else’s.
Jiang Miaomiao said, “It’s you.”
He nodded, looking around.
“Have you had dinner? Let’s have a meal together.”
She took a step back, creating some distance between them.
“No, I have to rush to work.”
“I know about your job. Let me arrange a leave for you.”
“No need, really… “
Jiang Miaomiao was about to refuse when Gu Changzhou suddenly sighed, looking at her seriously.
“I’ve been busy lately, and I’m not sure how long I’ll stay at the base. Can you give me a chance to talk privately?”
Some things had to be clarified sooner or later. It was better to speak early to avoid carrying any burdens.
Jiang Miaomiao agreed, and they found the nearest canteen to have a meal together.
The base was fair in many aspects, but at Gu Changzhou’s level, there were certain privileges. For example, he could use his ID to jump the queue and get two portions of food in advance. They found a table near the window and sat down.
The food at the base was either potatoes or radishes, occasionally with some pumpkin or preserved sausage, depending on whether there were any new supplies.
Jiang Miaomiao was already tired of the food, and her mood wasn’t good, so she had little appetite. She ate a little listlessly and fed the rest of the meal to Rourou.
Gu Changzhou watched her, his gaze capturing every movement, every smile and frown. The more he looked at her, the more he felt that she resembled him.
Was she really his daughter?
If so, what should he do about her relationship with Lu Qiming?
After a moment of silence, Gu Changzhou said, “Last time you took away our plane and locked us in the room. According to the base rules, you should have been expelled.”
“What? Are you going to kick me out?”
Jiang Miaomiao was not worried at all; instead, she seemed a bit excited.
If she could be expelled together with Lu Qiming, that would be great. She was willing to become a zombie with him and roam freely.
However, Gu Changzhou’s words quickly dispelled her thoughts.
“But because you and Lu Qiming were not residents of the base at that time, that rule shouldn’t apply. So before bringing you back, I applied to the base and took responsibility for the loss.”
Jiang Miaomiao looked disappointed, “Okay.”
“You don’t want to?”
Gu Changzhou keenly sensed her emotions.
She shook her head, “Of course not, it’s just… well, there’s nothing to say about the past. Did you invite me to eat just to talk about this?”
Gu Changzhou paused for two seconds with the chopsticks in his hand before placing them on the table.
“I want to know if what you told me was true.”
The age she was abandoned, the clothes she was wearing, and the inexplicable familiarity he felt from her.
All of these had been troubling him during this time, making it difficult for him to sleep at night.
Jiang Miaomiao put down her bowl as well and spoke frankly, “I made it up.”
Gu Changzhou was stunned.
She had long prepared an excuse and calmly said, “I’ve read some gossip about you before, including your daughter’s situation, so I said those things. I’m sorry.”
His pupils trembled slightly as he stared at her, and his Adam’s apple rolled with difficulty.
“Was it all made up? Not a single word was true?”
Avoiding his gaze, Jiang Miaomiao replied, “None of it was true.”
He seemed as if he had been splashed with cold water and sat motionless in his chair.
Someone passing by recognized him and ran over excitedly to greet him.
But Gu Changzhou couldn’t hear anything. His hands on the table clenched into fists, with veins bulging on the back of his hand.
Seeing the situation, the greeter didn’t dare to get involved and quickly left.
Jiang Miaomiao instinctively hugged Jiang Rourou and asked, “Are you angry?”
She had lied to him, but many years ago, he had also lied to Lu Qiming. This could be considered payback, and the price he paid was far less severe than what Lu Qiming suffered.
Gu Changzhou took a few deep breaths, trying to calm himself.
“Then who are your parents? Where were you born?”
Jiang Miaomiao said, “My orphan status is real, it’s just that the details were fabricated by me. If you don’t believe me, considering the current situation, I can’t prove my identity. How about… we do a DNA test?”
If the result showed they weren’t father and daughter, it should completely dispel his doubts. It seemed like the best solution, and the base had people who could perform this test.
However, the word “okay” kept turning in Gu Changzhou’s mouth, but he couldn’t say it out loud.
This period had been painful, but it was also a time of happiness. When he learned that his daughter might still be alive and had grown up, he was willing to give everything in exchange for her lifetime safety and carefree life.
If the test result showed she wasn’t his daughter, then the last glimmer of hope would be gone.
He was given hope, only to be completely desperate once again.
Why was she so heartless?
Jiang Miaomiao suggested the DNA test and waited for him to respond. After a long time of silence, she urged him, “Captain Gu, what do you think? If you agree, we can go for the test tonight…”
Gu Changzhou suddenly stood up and coldly said, “I won’t do it!”
Jiang Miaomiao: “…”
If he didn’t want to, then he didn’t want to. Why was he so fierce?
“Woof, woof, woof!”
Jiang Rourou, who had been eating with its head down, suddenly raised its head and barked at him, as if scolding him on her behalf.
Jiang Miaomiao comforted it a few times and continued to ask, “Are you sure? I still think doing the test would be better. After all, I don’t want to take advantage of this relationship.”
Gu Changzhou said expressionlessly, “Even if you want to, you can’t take advantage of it.”
“…Okay.”
She shrugged, got up, and asked, “Is there anything else? If not, I’ll go back to my dorm.”
Gu Changzhou remained silent, so she turned and left, her small figure disappearing into the crowd.
Like a small stream merging into a big river, she quickly became untraceable.
On the subway back, Jiang Miaomiao saw a news report on the large screen. It turned out that a few days ago, Gu Changzhou led a team to the city to transport frozen meat for the base. They were ambushed by zombies during the mission, resulting in several team members dead and many others seriously injured.
Due to the risk of infection, the injured couldn’t be brought back to the base for treatment, so they had to set up a temporary operating room outside.
Chen Hong and others were probably busy rescuing the wounded.
Death was now so close to her, so close that someone who had just been sitting next to her at the dining table had narrowly escaped death.
When she returned to the dorm, the survivors had already finished work.
She returned the clothes and found her colleagues on the same floor. She was relieved to learn that the headmaster hadn’t scolded her, so she went back to her room.
She had to go to work tomorrow, so she planned to sleep early.
Unexpectedly, not long after lying down, there was another visitor, Yuan Mubing.
She was also in that team and had suffered minor injuries, with her left hand in a cast.
A man accompanied her, taller than her, with deep features exuding an imposing aura.
Jiang Miaomiao recognized his identity almost at first sight.
He must be the original male lead.
In the past, when his appearance was described in the book, it was always depicted as three parts indifferent and three parts stern, just like a fan-shaped graph.
Now, seeing him in person, it seemed to match quite well.
However, after looking for a while, she still found the shameless and faceless Lu Qiming more pleasing to the eye.
She threw a teasing look at Yuan Mubing, who awkwardly cleared her throat and spoke seriously, “I want to discuss something with you.”
“What is it?”
Jiang Miaomiao wanted to offer them a seat, but the room was too small and there were no spare chairs, so she gave up and they all stood to talk.
Yuan Mubing said, “I want to invite you to join the rescue team.”
Again with this?
Jiang Miaomiao was a little surprised. “I remember you mentioned it before.”
“Yes, but you didn’t agree.”
“Well, this time I won’t agree either.”
Yuan Mubing frowned.
“Are you worried about safety? There are various positions in the rescue team, and each person has their own role. Not everyone needs to face zombies directly. If you join, you’ll only be responsible for the preparation work before the mission.”
After the previous accurate predictions, Yuan Mubing had left a deep impression on her and had been wanting to recruit Jiang Miaomiao into the team.
For example, this time, if they had predicted the zombie ambush in advance, there wouldn’t have been so many casualties.
It sounded a bit ridiculous, but the apocalypse was already insane, with one unimaginable thing happening after another.
Since she had no way out, why not try all possible methods?
Jiang Miaomiao faced Yuan Mubing’s earnest gaze and thought for a moment before shaking her head.
“No, I can’t.”
“Why not?”
“You’re all amazing, willing to sacrifice everything for the base, and I truly admire that. But I’m a selfish person; I just want to stay here and meet him occasionally.”
Yuan Mubing suddenly realized something and pondered for a moment before saying, “If you join the rescue team, you’ll have more opportunities to see him, you know?”
“More opportunities?”
“According to the rules, after each mission, we get a few days of rest. If you agree to join the rescue team, I can negotiate with the laboratory and arrange for you to visit Lu Qiming during your rest periods.”
Jiang Miaomiao looked skeptical. “Are you sure you can successfully negotiate that?”
“I’m eighty percent sure.”
Still not fully convinced, she hesitated with lowered eyes.
Yuan Mubing took a step forward and continued, striking while the iron was hot, “Deceiving you serves no purpose for me. Besides, even if I fail to negotiate later or you change your mind, you can still leave the rescue team and return to the base to continue your current life. That won’t violate the base rules.”
Her words greatly alleviated Jiang Miaomiao’s worries, but she hadn’t interacted much with Yuan Mubing, so she still wasn’t completely reassured.
Yuan Mubing suggested, “If you’re really worried, I can draft a contract for you, clearly stating every condition. Besides…”
She glanced quickly at the man beside her, “You also know my secret, don’t you?”
Jiang Miaomiao pinched her palm and looked up, saying, “Alright, I’ll join.”
Yuan Mubing waited for a while, finally getting the answer she wanted. She let out a sigh of relief.
“Tomorrow, you don’t need to go to your previous unit for work. Come directly to the rescue team’s office. Here’s the address.”
She handed Jiang Miaomiao a map and marked a location on it, then returned it to her.
Jiang Miaomiao looked at the map for a moment and roughly memorized it. She asked, “Can you have someone inform Lu Qiming and explain the situation to him? I don’t want him to worry.”
Yuan Mubing didn’t understand, “Why don’t you just not tell him? He can’t contact the outside world anyway. It’s fine to keep it a secret for a year or two.”
She shook her head, “I don’t want to deceive him.”
“Alright, I’ll arrange it when I get back. Rest well, and I’ll be waiting for you in the office tomorrow morning.”
After saying that, Yuan Mubing left, and the cramped dorm room fell silent.
A few minutes later, Jiang Miaomiao’s female neighbor, who had eavesdropped, and Liu Lan came knocking on her door, asking if she was going to join the rescue team.
Jiang Miaomiao nodded, and the two of them looked envious.
“The rescue team is great. They get military rations for every meal, unlike us, always eating potatoes and radishes. I’ve been craving meat for half a year.”
“Yeah, every time supplies arrive, they get the first share. They’re really fortunate.”
“But it’s also dangerous, after all, they often fight zombies.”
“But it’s worth it. Staying here is like being laborers, so it’s better to go out and fight for some excitement.”
The two of them chatted enthusiastically, and it seemed they had no intention of leaving until late at night.
Jiang Miaomiao couldn’t find a way to join the conversation, and she didn’t have much to talk about. She sat on the bed, hugging her legs, and started thinking about Lu Qiming.
When they left, they mentioned that he would undergo surgery, and Chen Hong was not present. It was probably someone else performing the operation. Would there be any danger?
Has the surgery been completed now? Has he eaten dinner?
She picked up her ID and really wanted to call him, but after thinking about it for a while, she gave up. She was afraid she might cry and affect his mood.
Her female neighbor and Liu Lan chatted endlessly until they got tired and bid their farewells.
Jiang Miaomiao turned off the lights and lay down in the blanket, touching the big belly of Jiang Rourou, which felt extremely pleasant. Suddenly, she remembered a tricky issue.
What about Jiang Rourou when she goes to the rescue team? It’s foolish and eats a lot. The rescue team couldn’t possibly take it with them on missions, right?
The next day, Jiang Miaomiao got up early and called Yuan Mubing specifically to discuss this matter. After some discussion, the result was that Jiang Rourou would be fostered at the nursery when she went on missions and continue to accompany the children there during her work hours.
As compensation, the nursery would take care of its three meals a day.
Colleagues from the same building were preparing to go to work, and the principal asked Jiang Miaomiao to come and get the dog.
Jiang Miaomiao was young but experienced the feeling of a reluctant mother in advance.
“Rourou, be good, please don’t bite anyone.”
Holding her own comb, she squatted beside the silly dog, which was unaware of its future, and combed its fur.
“When you go to work with your sister to make money for meals, I’ll take you out to play when I have a break.”
The colleague looked at the time and urged, “Can we leave now? I might miss the subway.”
Jiang Miaomiao had no choice but to put away the comb, hugged the dog’s head, and handed the leash to her colleague.
With her colleague leading Jiang Rourou forward, since they had already met a few days ago, it didn’t resist. However, it kept turning its head back, its eyes filled with confusion, not understanding why she wasn’t following.
After walking several dozen meters, it seemed to want to come back and was forcibly pulled away by the colleague.
Jiang Miaomiao looked at its foolish appearance, and her heart felt like it was breaking. She stood in the corridor gazing for a long time until she could no longer see them before returning to her room to prepare.
After putting on the snowproof suit, taking her ID, she felt like she had forgotten something just as she was about to leave.
She carefully scanned the room, and her gaze stopped at the ring on the corner of the table. She had taken it off while washing her face in the morning and placed it there with utmost care. She almost forgot.
Jiang Miaomiao hurriedly went over, took off her gloves, put on the ring, and then left.
Half an hour later, she arrived at the address Yuan Mubing had given her.
The iron gate of the office was wide open, and there was a sign on the door that read “Fourth Rescue Team.”
It was during working hours, and many team members passed by her side. Most of them were strong and energetic, laughing and joking around, making her appear even more like a beaten chicken in society.
Jiang Miaomiao took a deep breath and walked in, trying to find Yuan Mubing’s office.
Inside, a group of young team members were playing around. She hesitantly asked, “Excuse me, is Vice Captain Yuan here?”
Everyone turned their heads and stared at her for a few seconds. She felt so nervous that she almost turned around and ran. Then, someone exclaimed in surprise, “You, you, you… Are you the new member the Vice Captain mentioned?”
Jiang Miaomiao stiffly leaned against the door frame. “Yes, it’s me.”
“Oh my god, the new member is like this! Come on, come on, say hello to everyone.” An outgoing-looking girl pulled her into the crowd of people.
Facing more than a dozen curious eyes, Jiang Miaomiao introduced herself. Just as she finished speaking, all the team members suddenly stood up and called out to the door, “Captain, Vice Captain.”
She followed their gazes and saw Yuan Mubing and the original male protagonist walking in from outside.
Yuan Mubing nodded to the team members and, noticing her, walked over and said, “You’ve already met everyone?”
Not really, but the original novel had a lot of scenes showing Yuan Mubing and the team members dealing with zombies, so she was quite familiar with some of the important supporting roles. Now, she just needed to remember their faces.
Jiang Miaomiao hummed in agreement. Yuan Mubing said, “Alright, let’s have a meeting to determine her position in the team.”
“Captain, is this person really going to stay in our team?” One team member seemed very dissatisfied and came forward to say, “We are a rescue team, not a circus. She’s short and thin, what can she do? Will she just drag us down?”
“Yeah, yeah, we do life-threatening work. We can’t have someone here just to eat for free.”
Several other team members joined in.
Jiang Miaomiao was extremely afraid of this kind of situation. Her body, which had just relaxed, tensed up again. She instinctively looked at Yuan Mubing.
Yuan Mubing was indeed the female lead and remained quite calm. “Weak physicality doesn’t mean a lack of ability.”
“What ability does she have? I can’t see any.”
“Her divination skills are impressive.”
“…Divination? Are you kidding?”
The speaking team member’s eyes almost popped out.
Yuan Mubing said coldly, “Don’t believe it? Jiang Miaomiao, show them what you can do.”
Jiang Miaomiao walked up to the person and extended her hand. “I want to see your palm.”
The person snorted and looked at her with disdain, extending his hand.
Jiang Miaomiao pretended to look at it for a while and recalled his back in the original text. She said, “You will be able to find your mother in the future.”
The person froze, looking at her in astonishment.
Ignoring his reaction, Jiang Miaomiao continued to read the palms of others. She tried to pick the ones she remembered clearly and almost all the details she mentioned matched, astonishing the people present.
The office suddenly became noisy as everyone crowded around her, eager for her to read their palms.
Jiang Miaomiao turned back and looked at Yuan Mubing with a dilemma.
Yuan Mubing clapped her hands on the table. “Quiet! Does anyone have any more questions? If not, the meeting will start now.”
With the appearance of a living fairy in the team, who would dare to have objections? They all wanted to please her and get her guidance.
The meeting lasted for an hour, during which Jiang Miaomiao learned about the detailed information of the rescue team and confirmed her role—to assist Yuan Mubing in formulating operational plans to minimize casualties.
It was similar to the role of an ancient military strategist.
She mostly remembered the important plot points from the novel and knew how to avoid danger.
However, she was worried that her appearance might change the main plotline, which would be troublesome.
While she was preoccupied with her thoughts, the office’s communication device suddenly rang.
The original male protagonist answered the call and, after a few minutes, announced to everyone that a new mission had arrived.
The medical supplies at the base were critically low, and a large tertiary hospital in a city in the south had been selected as the target.
They were to depart immediately to retrieve the reserves from the hospital.
The experienced team members quickly prepared in response. They checked their weapons, replenished ammunition, and changed their attire.
Jiang Miaomiao stood on the side, feeling very bewildered.
“Come here.”
Yuan Mubing pulled her into an office and gave her a set of combat gear, including a bulletproof vest and helmet, and asked her to change quickly.
Jiang Miaomiao changed her clothes and was ready to go out.
Yuan Mubing shook her head and helped her fasten the zipper and tie her shoelaces again.
“Make sure your clothes are worn properly; otherwise, they will become a burden during the operation. I won’t give you a gun for now. If you don’t know how to use it, you might end up injuring yourself. You’ll stay on the plane during the mission…”
“I know how to use a gun.”
Jiang Miaomiao said confidently.
Yuan Mubing looked surprised. “You know how?”
“Yes, he taught me. I know how to use both rifles and handguns.”
As she said this, she couldn’t help but feel a little proud.
Before she met Lu Qiming, the only “weapon” she had was the gas cylinder used to destroy herself.
Yuan Mubing nodded and took out a gun, handing it to her.
“You can use this one for now. Let’s go, board the plane.”
There was an elevator next to the office, and Jiang Miaomiao initially thought it was for going upstairs. Only when she went in with her teammates did she realize that it directly led to the entrance of the base, where they would board the plane.
With the imminent encounter with zombies and Lu Qiming not by her side, she felt a bit uncomfortable.
A teammate beside her noticed her nervousness and patted her shoulder.
“Don’t be afraid. The heavens favor beautiful people.”
She smiled gratefully, holding the gun a little tighter.
After flying for over four hours, the plane arrived over the target city.
Yuan Mubing scanned the map with a device and began strategic deployment.
Jiang Miaomiao walked over to take a look and suddenly realized that this was the place that almost caused them to be wiped out!
After Yuan Mubing finished arranging everything, she asked her, “Any questions?”
She nodded vigorously, pointing to the map and said, “You absolutely cannot enter from here.”
“Then where should we enter from?”
After looking for a while, she chose another route. “Here.”
The original male protagonist looked skeptical. “Are you sure? There are zombies distributed there, and it’s not safe.”
“I know, but only by going this way can everyone survive.”
He was still half-doubting, but Yuan Mubing decisively made a decision. “Let’s do as she says.”
The male protagonist opened his mouth to argue, but swallowed his words and agreed.
The plane landed on the rooftop of the hospital, and the team members went down one by one.
Jiang Miaomiao and a few others stayed on the plane to provide support. Although they didn’t need to confront the zombies, looking at the vast sea of corpses below, they couldn’t help but feel their blood boil.
After an intense battle, not a single member of the rescue team died.
Yuan Mubing was quite satisfied with the result. They arranged for a transport plane to deliver the supplies back, while they found a safe place to stay and prepare to continue tomorrow.
The place they settled was on the rooftop of a building with no beds or tents, and they all slept on the floor.
At night, there was a possibility of zombie attacks, so they arranged to have teams of four take turns to be on duty for two hours.
As a newcomer, Jiang Miaomiao received a lot of care from everyone, and they put her in the first group, so she could get a full rest after her shift.
Two hours later, she and her team members stepped down to have their military rations and use the restroom. When she came back, she couldn’t find her ring, and she anxiously searched everywhere.
“Are you looking for this?”
Yuan Mubing sat on the ground, supporting his long legs, and dangled the thing in his hand.
Jiang Miaomiao looked closely and hurriedly ran over.
“Yes, this is my ring.”
She chuckled.
“It’s actually a ring? I thought it was a nut, and almost threw it away.”
Blushing, Jiang Miaomiao took the ring and treasured it as she put it on her ring finger. She had lost some weight at the base, and the ring kept falling off. She would have to find a string to wrap it around when she returned.
After eating and drinking enough, she found a clean spot to lie down and curled up to sleep.
In the middle of the night, someone woke her up.
Before she even opened her eyes, a communicator was handed to her.
Yuan Mubing said, “It’s from your man.”
“…”
Since the team members were all sleeping, she didn’t want to wake them up.
Jiang Miaomiao took the communicator back to the plane, closed the door, tidied her hair and clothes, and then raised the communicator.
On the screen was Lu Qiming’s face. He took a quick look and laughed so hard that he almost couldn’t catch his breath.
“Why didn’t you turn on the light? I can only see your teeth.”
And those bright titanium alloy laser eyes.
