Flirting
“She’s a female classmate, and their family is doing quite well,” Su Su replied. She wasn’t foolish; it was clear that Mother Lin was inquiring on behalf of her son. Mother Lin was indeed a very good mother, always thinking of her son in everything.
“In that case, let’s not buy a watch. Let’s buy a sewing machine instead.” Mother Lin felt that they shouldn’t make Su Su feel uncomfortable. After all, even if she had taken a liking to their son, she had still brought some face to the Lin family. Otherwise, her naive son might have been subject to some haggling.
Lin Chuan immediately nodded in agreement. Although it might be a bit difficult to obtain one, he should be able to manage it. However, there was the issue of time…
“Mom, sewing machines are in high demand, and there might be a long wait.” Then he glanced at Su Su again and said in a weaker tone: “Can I get you one after a while?”. This was a significant item for a newlywed, and postponing the purchase was disrespectful to the bride.
However, Su Su didn’t mind at all. She didn’t know how to use a sewing machine yet, so she waved her hand and said, “It’s okay, I don’t need it urgently.”
“Ah, how can you be like this?” Mother Lin couldn’t understand why she wasn’t more concerned about herself.
Su Su could clearly see what Mother Lin was thinking. She thought Su Su was too easy-going. But what did she have to compete for? She had plenty of money in hand and had married such a good man. According to the plot, her husband was going to get promoted soon, and they would even receive an increase in allowances.
However, in the original story, the female protagonist had asked her husband for money because the school was organizing an event that required a lot of funds. Her husband had indeed given her money, and the Lin family had received only 20 yuan because of it. But they had proudly displayed this 20 yuan and were envied by the villagers for a whole year.
What they didn’t know was that the female protagonist had taken about 200 yuan from her husband with just one letter, and she had used it for both the event funds and to prepare clothes and backpacks. In the story, she had expressed her gratitude to her husband in her heart but hadn’t made any practical moves.
Su Su shook her head, not wanting to dwell on those thoughts. Since they were going to town today, it was certain that the male lead would buy her something as a memento. She suddenly remembered that even though the Lin family and the neighbouring house were good, they didn’t have a full-length mirror. She was truly uncomfortable with that, so she said, “How about you buy me a full-length mirror? I want a big one.”
“Yeah, okay,” Lin Chuan’s throat moved. Although the marriage had been arranged hastily, he had genuinely taken a liking to her. Leaving aside other aspects, both her appearance and character were impeccable. He had to take good care of her in the future.
He didn’t know exactly how to take care of his wife, as his leader hadn’t taught him that. If all else failed, she would have the final say in everything at home.
Lin Chuan nervously made up his mind, and then he borrowed a donkey cart to take Su Su to the commune.
Although there were only the two of them, Lin Chuan didn’t say a word on the way, and sweat dripped down his face as if it were raining.
In the mountains, there was no one else around, and they inexplicably felt nervous as an unmarried man and woman.
Su Su also felt that his demeanour was a bit stiff and prodded him, saying, “Lin Chuan.”
“Yes.” He sounded a bit like he was shouting, but immediately adjusted his tone and asked, “Is there something wrong?”
“My legs are getting numb from the cold. Can I cover them with your coat?”
“Sure.”
And then, her legs were tucked inside his coat.
He felt a warmth in his heart and reached down to pat the coat.
“Lin Chuan, do you think it’s shameless of me to actively want to marry you?”
Su Su asked coquettishly, even though she knew that Lin Chuan was willing. She just couldn’t quite tell from his demeanour.
Lin Chuan, while flicking the reins, said, “You’re a good girl, not shameless at all.”
Su Su chuckled and replied, “I’m really daring to marry you, and you’re really daring to marry me. You don’t even know where I came from or whether I had a previous relationship. What if I’m just using you?” She felt foolish for saying that.
“In such matters, it’s women who lose out. I’m a man.”
His declaration that he was a man seemed to calm Su Su’s chaotic heart.
Indeed, the supporting male lead was a man and a good one at that. He was responsible and had a sense of honour and duty.
She leaned her back against Lin Chuan’s back and said, “Well, then you have to prove that I made the right choice.”
“Okay.” Lin Chuan understood her fears. When she had hurriedly agreed to marry him earlier, she might regret it later. But he wanted to marry her, and he would do his best to ensure she didn’t regret it.
Soon, they arrived at the commune. Since they had been here before, it was like a familiar route, and they both made their way to the commune store.
Lin Chuan was a peculiar person too. Just a moment ago in the donkey cart, they were leaning on each other, but as soon as there were more people around, he kept his distance.
Well, as a modern girl with a boyfriend, she would definitely want to show him off. Besides, he was handsome and a soldier, making him a striking sight wherever he went.
However, he kept his distance, didn’t let her hold his hand, and didn’t touch her. But he helped carry things and even insisted on paying.
After spending the money, he took two steps back voluntarily and avoided eye contact.
Su Su couldn’t help but feel that if an outsider were to see them, they might think they were two unrelated individuals. They were already in a relationship, yet they were keeping such a distance that they couldn’t even discuss things properly.
Finally, they arrived at the place that sold mirrors. The sales clerk, without even looking up, said, “Comrade, you want to buy a mirror, you need an industrial ticket.”
“A ticket.” Su Su had one but had forgotten to bring it.
Then, a ticket was handed to her, along with ten yuan.
“I want the big one. How much is it?”
“Five yuan.”
Wow, such a large mirror was only five yuan?
But the sales clerk continued without looking up, “Next, please.”
What kind of attitude was this?
Su Su wanted to get angry, but suddenly, she heard a “thud.”
Yes, a very forceful ” thud.” The counter of the shop was hit so hard that it made a creaking and breaking noise. The clerk had to look up and immediately smiled, saying, “Oh, comrade in the military, I didn’t see you there. What do you want?”
“My fiancée wants to buy a mirror.”
“Alright, I’ll get it for you right away.”
Wow, her boyfriend had quite the assertiveness. Moreover, he openly referred to her as his fiancée.
Su Su felt a little excited and promptly bought a mirror with red quotes spray-painted on it. Although it was somewhat large and not the slim, elongated mirrors of modern times, it should work fine when placed lower to reflect her entire body.
Buying things these days was really challenging. But as she watched Lin Chuan securing the mirror onto the cart, she remarked, “Their attitude was really bad; I almost got angry.”
