The zombies before them were all under the control of the mental-type zombie. The fastest way to resolve this situation was to kill the mental-type zombie.
As long as the mental-type zombie was gone, this horde of zombies would lose its backbone. With their strength, breaking out of the encirclement would not be difficult.
But that elusive mental-type zombie was hidden among this horde. Aside from another mental-type ability user, it would be as difficult as climbing to the heavens for anyone else to find it.
Unless they killed every single zombie present.
But that was no easier than finding the mental-type zombie. After all, they only had a dozen or so people, while their opponents were several hundred zombies.
So the best plan right now was to leave this place as quickly as possible before the zombie encirclement fully formed.
Lin Yang sat in the driver’s seat, looking at the number of zombies on the street that was still continuing to increase. He could not help feeling shocked. He gripped the steering wheel tightly, took a deep breath, and said to the people in the seats behind him, “Everyone hold on tight. I’ll see if I can rush out from here.”
After saying this, he slammed his foot down on the accelerator. The SUV charged wildly through the zombie horde, knocking quite a few zombies flying at once. Blood splattered across the glass windows.
Ruan Ning was afraid of being thrown into the doors or windows by the speeding vehicle, so she quickly gripped the seat beneath her tightly. This was not a time to joke around.
She had encountered zombie hordes many times before. Although she had escaped smoothly each time, the situation this time was different. This was a premeditated operation specifically aimed at them.
Zombies did not fear death or pain. Their only flaw was that they had no self-awareness and only acted according to instinct. But once a mental-type zombie was controlling them from behind, the level of danger would increase greatly.
To sum it up: whoever encountered this kind of thing was unlucky.
And now, the unlucky ones were them. Ruan Ning leaned against the seat, wanting to cry but having no tears, as she looked at the zombie horde that had almost completely surrounded their three vehicles.
The roads in front, behind, left, and right could more or less be said to have been blocked off by these several hundred zombies. Although the SUV had a high chassis, and when they usually travelled, they often directly knocked zombies away to save effort, crashing through a few zombies was one thing. But here, there were several hundred of them. Even a tank might not be able to force its way through this.
So their vehicle had only driven half a street before it was blocked so tightly that not even water could pass through. In the end, everyone could only get out of the cars and diligently start killing zombies.
However, what kind of stamina did zombies have, and what kind of stamina did they have? If they fought a prolonged battle against zombies, the ones who would lose would definitely be the humans. So before everyone’s abilities and physical strength were exhausted, they had to find a way to escape.
Unfortunately, there were simply too many zombies around them. The situation was even more dangerous than when they had encountered that group of child zombies last time.
Jiang Jingchao could not help feeling somewhat guilty. If he had not been so anxious to save people yesterday and expanded his mental net too widely, leaving him unable to use his ability even now, perhaps he could have helped find that mental-type zombie today. Then everyone would not have ended up in this situation, where they could only flee in panic.
Lin Yang said, “Chaozi, you don’t need to take all the responsibility onto yourself.”
Gu Yicheng observed the surrounding situation. With a sweep of his hand, he put the three vehicles in front of them into his space and said in a low voice, “Let’s find a shop nearby and hide for now.”
The cars were clearly not going to make it out of here. Rather than remain stuck here, it was better to travel light and take a gamble.
Although the current situation was urgent, it had not yet reached the point of utter desperation. There were shops all along this street. Since breaking through from the road was not feasible, they could only find another path and think of a way through these shops.
As everyone killed zombies, they looked for an opportunity to retreat toward the area with the most nearby shops.
The feeling of escaping through a zombie horde was both dangerous and thrilling. The problem was that if one was even slightly careless, they would come face to face with a zombie.
Fortunately, after following everyone and experiencing so much over the past month, Ruan Ning might not have trained up much physical strength for fighting, but her stamina for running for her life was still acceptable. If she could not beat them, was she not allowed to run?!
But the five people they had found in the escape room club, including Father Jiang and Mother Jiang, had been hiding indoors all these days. They had never had the chance to train through battles with zombies. Furthermore, none of them had awakened abilities, and this was their first time encountering this kind of situation, so the psychological pressure was enormous. When people were nervous, their stamina drained even faster. Gradually, they began to fall behind.
Their physical condition was comparable to Ruan Ning’s when she had just been rescued from the apartment by Gu Yicheng and the others. After running only a few more steps, they would start panting.
Father Jiang did often exercise for half an hour in the residential compound every morning, and sometimes he even dragged Mother Jiang along with him. So the two of them had the best stamina among the five. As for the other three, if the members of the Morning Light Squad had not been covering the rear, they would have been caught by the zombies long ago.
“I can’t. I can’t run anymore. I really can’t run anymore.” The young woman now felt as if the air entering her lungs was burning. She could not help gasping heavily and wanted to stop.
Before the apocalypse, she had only been a female white-collar worker sitting in an office. Unlike some of her colleagues, she had not bought a gym membership on weekends and gone to exercise every day. This kind of high-intensity physical exertion was still too much for her.
If she had known that they would encounter so many zombies after coming out, she might as well have stayed in that escape room club. At least there was food, drink, and safety there, and she did not have to face zombies. The outside world was truly too terrifying.
Mother Jiang was beside the young woman. Seeing that she could not hold on and had stopped, she advised, “Xiao Zeng, even if you can’t run, you still have to keep running. The zombie horde will definitely catch up again soon.”
“Teacher Jiang, you go first. I’ll rest for a bit and catch up soon.”
These days, the young woman had either hidden at home or hidden in the escape room. She had not come into contact with people outside at all. Father Jiang, Mother Jiang, and the other middle-aged couple were among the few people she had encountered. And because this young woman was only a few years older than their children, the two couples had usually taken extra care of her.
Because of this, her way of thinking was still stuck before the apocalypse. She thought that, at the very least, she was not bad-looking. At the company, even if she was not the prettiest, there had still been plenty of people pursuing her. Surely among these people, there would be someone who cherished beauty and pitied women.
But after running for so long, the young woman discovered that out of so many people, not a single person had voluntarily stopped to pay attention to her. At this moment, she truly regretted not finding a boyfriend earlier. Look at the young couple walking in the middle of the group—those two could still run hand in hand and take care of each other.
“Jingchao, don’t worry about me. Go help Xiao Zeng. It isn’t easy for her as a girl,” Mother Jiang said to Jiang Jingchao, who was supporting her.
Jiang Jingchao neither agreed nor refused. He had Jiang Jingyang first take Father Jiang and Mother Jiang ahead.
Even if he could help her once, he could not help her for the rest of her life. Jiang Jingchao looked at the person in front of him and sighed. “We have no obligation to save you. Earlier, you were the one who chose to leave with us. I can only remind you of one thing: in this situation, every second you rest increases the possibility that the zombies will catch up. If you don’t want to become like those zombies behind us, then don’t stop.”
“…Damn it! Isn’t it just that you can run faster than me? What’s so amazing about that? Back when this older sister was still in school and exercised and ran every day, I didn’t run any slower than any of you.” The young woman was only complaining. Seeing that she had almost fallen to the very back of the group, she bit her lip and quickly sped up to follow them.
She was not stupid enough to think that she could survive alone in a zombie horde. Judging from the tone of the man’s words just now, it did not seem fake either. For all she knew, they really might leave her here alone to face the zombies.
Although Jiang Jingchao said he would not bother with her, in reality, he was not truly so hard-hearted. Besides, Mother Jiang had just told him to help. So he was responsible for covering the rear and arrived at the destination at almost the same time as the young woman.
They arrived at a fresh produce supermarket. After everyone had entered, Xue Chen and Lin Yang worked together with their abilities, one earth-type and one metal-type, and finally sealed the entrance completely before the zombies arrived.
