Do You Like It?
Is it wrong to answer “responsibility”?
Isn’t it said that a man’s lifelong responsibility is his wife and children?
He wasn’t good at explaining things, so he continued driving the little donkey cart while thinking of ways to make the girl behind him happy without saying a word.
Suddenly, he stopped along the way, and Su Su asked curiously, “What are you doing?”
He reached out to tie the donkey to the side of the road and said, “Wait for me here for a moment.” Then, he took off his coat and gave it to her.
“Don’t go like this, it’s cold,” Su Su reached out and said. However, he seemed not to have heard and ran off.
It must be said that since the day they met, she knew that this man could run very fast, and now she witnessed it once again.
Could he be going to answer the call of nature?
That was a possibility, but there was no need to run so fast.
She continued to sit in the donkey cart and wait. When she had nothing to do, she reached out and touched the donkey. The donkey had been borrowed from the brigade, as it was not yet time for each family to keep livestock.
The communication with the donkey went quite well, and Su Su got down from the cart and picked some dried grass and leaves to feed it.
The donkey seemed quite satisfied with the food, and the two of them got along harmoniously.
When Lin Chuan returned and saw that she liked small animals so much, he glanced at the wild rabbit in his hand. Would she want to keep it if he handed it over to her? Wild rabbits were not easy to raise; they might even dig through your walls and escape.
When he was a child, he had wanted to keep rabbits, but they all ran away when they grew bigger. Once rabbits escaped, they were hard to catch again. Besides, he had caught them to provide her with some meat for nourishment. So, he kept an eye on her movements, and with a slight pinch of his fingers, the rabbit breathed its last.
When he returned, he lied with his eyes wide open and said, “I got this for you.”
“Is the rabbit dead? How did it die?”
“It ran into a tree.”
“???” How did he know that a rabbit had run into a tree?
“I was originally going to collect bird eggs, but unexpectedly, I ran into the rabbit.” The girl was timid, he couldn’t say that he had caught it and strangled it himself. At least, not now.
“Well, it’s perfect for stewing.” Today, they were expecting guests at home, and they hadn’t prepared any special dishes. This rabbit would come in handy. However, it seemed like Lin Chuan had some luck when he went out; he had found a rabbit in just one outing.
Was he just unlucky when he was at home? Did meeting her make him lucky?
Having the rabbit made her forget the anger she had just felt, and she only remembered when they were almost home that this man had only talked about responsibility, not affection. So, she felt a bit disappointed again.
But when she thought about it, they had only known each other for a few days; it shouldn’t be so quick to develop feelings for someone.
Take it slow; there would be a time when he would admit his feelings.
Seeing that they were about to reach the village entrance, she decided to make a move. She swayed on the donkey cart, trying to sit next to Lin Chuan. However, at that moment, the donkey suddenly cried out, and its hooves slipped. She lost her balance and fell down. Lin Chuan reacted quickly, catching her and pulling her back up into his arms, sitting her on his lap.
“…” Lin Chuan was suddenly holding a beautiful woman, and he was momentarily stunned.
Su Su struggled a bit but couldn’t break free. She blushed and explained, “My leg fell asleep.”
“Okay,” he responded with a nod, politely helping her back onto the seat.
Su Su, though she had successfully taken a seat next to Lin Chuan, noticed that he had clenched his fist. She couldn’t help but ask, “Lin Chuan, did I hurt you when I fell?”
Seeing Lin Chuan tense up and said without turning his head, “No.” He would not admit it. Her elbow had hit a certain sensitive area, and it was now both painful and somewhat pleasurable. Luckily, he was wearing cotton pants; otherwise, it would have been quite embarrassing.
Especially now that they were sitting side by side, he didn’t dare to move at all.
“Are you feeling uncomfortable?”
“No.”
“Then can you move a bit?”
He still didn’t dare to move.
“Lin Chuan, do you dislike me?”
“No, I don’t dislike you. I… like you.” He blurted out in his excitement, letting out his hometown dialect.
Suddenly confessed to, Su Su, who had been feeling conflicted, was stunned for a moment. Then, she abruptly covered her face and said, “W-who asked you to like me?” After that, she turned around and ignored him. However, she was secretly delighted to hear his answer.
Lin Chuan likes her—so why would she stay mad? She might as well enjoy it quietly.
After a long ride, the donkey cart finally arrived at the Lin family home. As soon as Su Su got down, Lin Chuan’s mother asked him to go pick up some relatives who were coming over, so Lin Chuan set off again. Lin Chuan’s mother led Su Su into the house with some things and explained, “Coming over are Chuanzi’s eldest and youngest aunts, along with their kids. They live far away, so it wasn’t easy for them to make the trip. His uncle probably won’t be coming; he wrote to say he broke his leg. But his kids will still come.”
“Oh,” Su Su replied.
“When they arrive, the house might get a little crowded. Just meet them briefly, and then have Chuanzi take you to the backyard to rest. Bring your things over too since tomorrow’s wedding feast will be prepared there.”
“Got it,” Su Su answered, feeling grateful. She hadn’t expected Lin Chuan’s mother to be so considerate toward her.
Lin Hai and Lin Chuan’s father carried the mirror to the backyard and asked Su Su to come along to decide where to place it. Su Su, unlike Qin Yueyue, didn’t overthink things or suspect they were making her do work. She simply picked a spot she liked and asked them to put the mirror there. Standing back, she confirmed it could reflect her entire figure and was quite pleased.
Lin Hai glanced at her a few times before asking, “Are you really going to be my sister-in-law?”
Su Su smiled and said, “Yes, not welcome?”
“No, it’s not that,” Lin Hai scratched his head. Honestly, he thought Su Su would make a good sister-in-law. After all, whenever he helped that so-called educated youth Qin, she would say nice things but never lift a finger. While he worked, she would sit in the shade and watch, not even bothering to fetch him a drink of water.
Though Su Su had only been here a few days and was also a bit delicate, at least she seemed to be on their family’s side. But their acquaintance was still short, and he wasn’t sure of her true nature.
Judging by his brother’s attitude, though, it was clear Lin Chuan was fully on board.
Unaware of what they were thinking, Su Su was genuinely excited. This would soon be her new home, and she was determined to make it perfect.
Fortunately, the Lin family had already done most of the tidying over the past two days. Since they weren’t splitting households, they’d likely help take care of her in the future, so there was little to worry about. Her large backpack had also been brought over, the keys were now in her hands, and she felt much more at ease. If only the female lead didn’t show up to stir trouble, this marriage would be practically perfect.
But the female lead did show up, looking pitiful. As soon as she entered the house, tears started streaming down her face as if someone owed her something. Su Su, however, wasn’t buying it. She looked at her coolly and said, “Why exactly has Comrade Qin come here? If you have something to say, say it. If you’re just here to cry, I won’t bother you further.”
