That night.
Ruan Ning couldn’t sleep.
The gas station wasn’t spacious, and the conditions were rudimentary. Everyone laid cardboard on the ground, covered themselves with clothes or blankets, and leaned against the walls to sleep.
Perhaps it was her first time spending the night outdoors, or she just wasn’t accustomed to it, but after two or three hours had passed, she still couldn’t sleep. In the end, she gave up and sat up, staring blankly out the window.
Ironically, the night sky after the apocalypse was much more beautiful than before.
The night was dark as ink, with brilliant stars adorning the sky. After the industrial emissions that had perpetually shrouded the city dissipated, the true beauty of the night sky emerged.
But Ruan Ning hadn’t forgotten that after tonight, the zombies would undergo their first evolution.
At that time, the zombies they encountered would become even more troublesome, and the chances of ordinary people surviving would diminish further.
Even the fearless Ruan Ning felt a rare sense of melancholy when she thought about this, but then she shook it off and decided to take a breath of fresh air outside since she couldn’t sleep.
There was a faint candlelight emanating from their car outside, where the night watch was stationed.
“Miss Ruan, why are you out here?” The one on night watch duty at this time was Captain Xue Chen.
Ruan Ning looked at him, smiled apologetically, and replied with a bright look in her eyes, “I couldn’t sleep at night, so I came out for some fresh air.”
Xue Chen, fearing that Ruan Ning might catch a cold in the chilly night, opened the car door and gestured for her to come in and sit.
Ruan Ning politely thanked him and didn’t decline, sitting in the passenger seat.
“Miss Ruan, after you’re done here, you should go back in quickly. It’s not very safe outside at night.” Xue Chen’s tone was serious. “I feel like the zombies tonight are more active than the previous nights.”
Unlike Ruan Ning, who had been staying in the apartment, Xue Chen’s squad had embarked on a rescue mission from the safe zone outside the city. It took them about five days to arrive at Ruan Ning’s neighbourhood. They had spent several nights outside and had gained some understanding of the zombie situation at night.
Surprised by his keen observation, Ruan Ning tried to tentatively suggest, “Captain Xue, have you considered that the zombies might evolve too? Just like how your abilities can upgrade.”
Now that she was also a member of the team, the evolution of zombies was an inevitable event, and it was imminent after midnight tonight. Ruan Ning wanted to give Xue Chen a gentle reminder so that he could be aware of the importance of this matter and prepare for it in advance. So that he wouldn’t be caught off guard like most of the other humans who were still in a state of confusion.
After hearing this, Xue Chen fell silent for a moment before replying, “I have.”
But he didn’t dare to think about it too much. The survival of humanity was already difficult enough as it was. So many people had died in just a few days. He couldn’t imagine what would happen if these zombies evolved and became even more formidable.
After a brief chat, the two of them sat quietly in the car, not speaking for a long time.
“We will definitely survive in the apocalypse.” This sentence was not only spoken to Xue Chen but also to reassure herself.
Ruan Ning didn’t want to die at all.
Even though she had crossed over to such a harsh world, the thought that came to her mind most often was how to live well in this apocalypse.
The evolution of zombies wasn’t entirely detrimental to humanity either. Humans would only discover the extent of their potential when they were pushed to the limit. Currently, only a few thousand or tens of thousands of people were able to see an ability user among hundreds of people. But in the future, there might be several ability users among hundreds of people. Moreover, soon, safe bases of all sizes would be established across the country. By uniting, the chances of survival might be even greater.
