SFTIAAB Chapter 52

Based on what Yuan Mubing said before they arrived and the descriptions in the original text, in this impregnable underground fortress, every survivor has an equal right to accommodation. The size and level of the houses are no longer based on their status but are allocated based on their needs.

Upon entering, Jiang Miaomiao indeed saw the same. The massive underground space resembled a city, cut into different sections by countless hard and cold metal passages.

To move around, they had to take a new type of “subway,” a rudimentary transportation that combined the convenience of a subway with the low cost of a mine cart.

The speed of this vehicle was 30 kilometers per hour, which might not seem impressive compared to the hundreds of kilometers per hour vehicles in the pre-apocalyptic world. However, it was the most suitable vehicle for the base in terms of energy consumption and requirements.

Riding the vehicle didn’t require paying a fare, but one needed to swipe an identity card that only the survivors of the base possessed. Temperature checks and iris scans were conducted when boarding and alighting, and infected individuals were strictly prohibited from mixing in.

As Jiang Miaomiao didn’t have the card, she could only stand by and watch as everyone else lined up to board.

Fortunately, before disembarking from the plane, she had changed into the base-issued snowproof suit, covering herself tightly, with only her eyes exposed. The dog and luggage were in the cargo compartment, not by her side. As a result, her appearance didn’t differ much from others, and she didn’t attract too much attention.

Yuan Mubing took out a communicator and spoke to someone. The automatic gate suddenly opened, and she motioned with her chin, saying, “Come in.”

Jiang Miaomiao followed her inside, and along the way, many people greeted her, with even an old man running over to give Yuan Mubing two plump white steamed buns, excitedly expressing his gratitude.

Yuan Mubing graciously accepted the buns. The warm welcome only disappeared when they reached a more open space inside the vehicle compartment.

Jiang Miaomiao was puzzled by how many people seemed to know her. When she looked up and saw the LCD screen on the compartment wall rolling her interview, it all made sense.

The vehicle didn’t have seats, so everyone had to stand or sit on the floor.

Jiang Miaomiao leaned against the railing, looking blankly at the dark window outside.

Yuan Mubing handed her a bun, but she shook her head.

“Eat it. Food is scarce in the base recently, and these fine flour buns might not be available often.”

Really? She had been self-sufficient on the island and almost forgotten what it was like to have insufficient clothing and food.

Jiang Miaomiao accepted the bun but didn’t eat it. She put it in her pocket and said, “Thank you.”

Yuan Mubing smiled and stood beside her, taking off her mask, and quietly started eating the bun.

In the novel, Yuan Mubing was a person of few words, strong execution capability, strong ability, and a cold personality. Apart from a few teammates whom she had faced life and death situations with, she rarely initiated contact with others. It was precisely because of this that she and the original male protagonist had secretly admired each other for a long time, experiencing numerous life and death separations without breaking that barrier.

For Jiang Miaomiao, who used to be just a reader, it was agonizing to be unable to sleep at night due to her anticipation.

Now, the other party was right in front of her, giving her a strange feeling.

“Could you introduce the areas outside to me?”

Jiang Miaomiao asked proactively.

In the future, Lu Qiming would probably not be around, and she would have to live alone. As a married person, she couldn’t remain ignorant of the outside world.

Yuan Mubing glanced at her, raised her hand, and took out a simplified map of the base from a shelf on the compartment’s inner wall.

Jiang Miaomiao was surprised. “So, there’s this?”

Yuan Mubing said, “The main buildings are marked on it, along with the routes for the vehicles. You can carry it with you; you’ll need it in the future.”

Jiang Miaomiao nodded and opened it to check.

On the map, there were marked locations for dormitories, dining halls, factories, supply distribution points, and medical centers, as well as a police station that still existed after the apocalypse.

On the back of the map was a red warning.

Shelter Management Regulations.

All residents of the Huaxia survivor shelter should adhere to the following requirements:

1. Do not steal, rob, commit violence, or harm others’ property or lives.

2. Obey government arrangements and undertake work tasks.

3. Have the obligation to protect the safety of the shelter.

Failure to comply with the above three points may result in the revocation of residence rights and expulsion from the shelter.

The warning was cold, and the subway was also cold.

Although the temperature gauge showed an indoor temperature of 18°C at the moment, Jiang Miaomiao still shrank her neck, wishing she could find Lu Qiming to hug.

Thankfully, after about ten minutes, they arrived at their destination.

The two of them got off among the crowd and walked through twists and turns for a long time until they finally reached the dormitory area.

It was a massive concrete building, with thick walls for insulation, making it look quite rudimentary.

The dormitories were divided into one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom units, with windows and doors densely arranged, reminiscent of a crowded beehive.

Due to the outbreak of the apocalypse, many families were broken, leading to separations, so most survivors lived in one-bedroom units, and it was a minority who lived with family members.

The government probably hoped to add some fun to people’s lives, so they laid down precious lawns on the open ground outside the dormitories.

When they arrived, there were more than a dozen children of different ages playing on the lawn.

“Big Sister Yuan.”

A little girl wearing a red knitted cap ran over and said to Yuan Mubing, “My mom said that as long as I study hard, I can go out to fight zombies and save the world like you in the future.”

Yuan Mubing bent down, showing an almost gentle smile, and patted her head.

“I didn’t save the world, she did.”

“She?”

The little girl looked at Jiang Miaomiao, looking puzzled, “Who is she?”

“Her surname is Jiang, and she’s also a very capable big sister.”

Hearing this, Jiang Miaomiao felt very embarrassed, knowing very well that she had never been associated with the word “capable.”

Of course, if food consumption were the measuring standard, then she could barely be considered capable.

The little girl quickly ran off to play with her friends. The two of them continued forward, and after a series of turns, they finally arrived at the thirteenth floor.

Yuan Mubing introduced the floor administrator to her, a short middle-aged woman named Liu Lan.

Before the apocalypse, Liu Lan was a university dormitory administrator, and after escaping to the base, she continued in this line of work.

Yuan Mubing was busy with her work, so she had to leave after bringing Jiang Miaomiao here. Before leaving, she instructed, “I and the team members live in Building 3 of the dormitories. You can take Metro Line 2 to get there. If you have any urgent matters, you can contact me using the dormitory building’s public communicator and dial my personal number 443005…”

Jiang Miaomiao got more flustered and couldn’t remember, “What was that again?”

Yuan Mubing took out the map from her pocket, wrote her address and number in a blank area, handed it to her, and patted her shoulder.

“Keep it safe. I’m leaving.”

She entered the elevator and quickly disappeared from sight.

Holding the map, Jiang Miaomiao felt completely helpless in this unfamiliar environment with strangers all around her.

Thankfully, after a while, someone came and helped her with her luggage and dog.

Jiang Rou Rou felt dizzy from the ride and perked up immediately when she saw Jiang Miaomiao, running over and begging to be hugged.

Jiang Miaomiao struggled to hold the dog and followed Liu Lan as they headed forward to her own dormitory.

The door had a silver metal plate with the number – 1173.

Liu Lan opened the door with a key and introduced the facilities inside the room.

“This is a one-bedroom unit, equipped with a 90*180 single bed, a single-door wardrobe, and a desk with a chair. The bathroom has a squat toilet, a sink, and a showerhead.

Heating is available 24 hours a day, cold water is available from 20:00 to 21:00, and hot water is available from 21:00 to 22:00.

The suspension of heating and water will be notified one day in advance on the elevator announcement screen. When it happens, you can go to the centralized water supply point in the dormitory to fetch water, so remember to bring several buckets.”

Jiang Miaomiao tried to remember the time periods and curiously asked, “What about power outages?”

Although there were no visible electrical appliances in the room, the light bulbs and elevators relied on electricity. Would they have to climb the stairs in the dark during a power outage?

Liu Lan looked at her with surprise.

“Power outage? Our electricity is converted from geothermal energy. If there’s a power outage, we’re probably all in trouble.”

“I see…”

She nodded.

Liu Lan continued to explain, “Here is a red button that connects to the police station. If there’s an attack or other emergencies, you can press it, and the police will rush over to help as soon as they receive the distress call.

This is your temporary ID, which you’ll need to show when undergoing checks. You’ll also need to swipe it at the canteen when you eat. There’s a monthly allowance of two thousand yuan. In addition, you need to swipe the card when using the communicator, and each person can use it three times a month.”

Jiang Miaomiao took the magnetic card and carefully put it into her pocket.

Liu Lan opened the cabinet, revealing bedding, pillows, and basic clothing and daily necessities.

After completing the handover of the items, Liu Lan asked, “Is there anything else you don’t understand?”

Of course, there was!

Jiang Miaomiao hurriedly said, “When will Lu Qiming come back? Can I go find him?”

Liu Lan didn’t understand, “Who’s Lu Qiming?”

“The person who came with me.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about. My task is to arrange accommodation for a woman with a dog. Is there anyone else?”

Hearing this, Jiang Miaomiao felt a sense of disappointment.

They didn’t even arrange accommodation for him. Does that mean he’ll be living in the laboratory in the future?

She had hoped to at least see him in the evenings.

Seeing her silence, Liu Lan didn’t show much interest in asking further questions and was ready to go back to do other things.

The room was very small, only a dozen square meters, and Jiang Rou Rou’s tail brushed against her legs.

Liu Lan looked down and reminded, “Your dog should stay in place. Although the base doesn’t allow taking others’ property, if someone steals it while you’re not paying attention, the police won’t be able to help you find it.”

She hurriedly said, “Okay, I will take good care of it. Thank you.”

Liu Lan nodded, walked out of the room, and closed the door behind her.

This was her new home?

Jiang Miaomiao sat on the wooden bed, looking at the cramped room in front of her, feeling a surreal sense of unreality.

At this time yesterday, she was still enjoying her honeymoon on the island.

“Woof! Woof! Woof!”

Jiang Rou Rou scratched the luggage, seeming hungry.

She cheered up and started tidying up the room.

First, she spread the bedsheet and comforter. The room’s heating was not sufficient, but the comforter was quite thick, so it shouldn’t be too cold to sleep at night.

The basic living supplies provided by the base were nothing special, just enough to meet basic needs, but she had brought a lot of her own luggage.

She hung her clothes in the wardrobe, placed her shoes in the corner, stacked various food items on the desk, facing the warm air vent to avoid freezing.

Jiang Rou Rou also had a pile of belongings, including its toys, mat, and a large shell for grinding its teeth, all placed next to the bed, taking up the last bit of space.

With everything sorted out, the tiny room was packed full, and it was difficult to turn around.

The wardrobe was too small to accommodate her large wedding dress.

Jiang Miaomiao found a nail and hammered it into the wall, hanging the wedding dress there, with the large skirt covering half of the window.

She touched the skirt and began to miss Lu Qiming again.

What was he doing now? Has he already started the experiments?

After an unknown period of time, someone knocked on the door.

Jiang Miaomiao opened it and saw one of Gu Changzhou’s subordinates.

“Miss Jiang, the test results for your friend are out. It has been confirmed that he is the person Professor Chen Hong and the others were looking for. He will stay in the laboratory for a long time to undergo experiments. During the experiment, he must remain isolated. You can apply to visit him once a month.”

“Once a month?” She couldn’t accept that. “Isn’t that too infrequent?”

“I’m sorry, there’s nothing we can do about it. If he comes into contact with external bacteria, it could seriously affect the experiment.”

“So you’re saying that even when we meet, I can’t touch him?”

The subordinate nodded, “You can only meet in the isolation room.”

Just thinking about that scene made Jiang Miaomiao feel uncomfortable.

The subordinate looked at her and comforted her, “You don’t have to worry too much. He is the hope for developing the vaccine, and the experts consider his life to be more important than their own.”

That might be true, but what use was that? No one could replace him in enduring the pain of being a guinea pig.

Jiang Miaomiao raised her head and asked, “Can I visit him more often? I promise not to interfere with their work.”

“Well…” The subordinate looked hesitant, “I’ll tell the captain and ask him to help you negotiate. Is that okay with you?”

She sighed dejectedly, “Okay.”

“Your official residency permit hasn’t been issued yet, right? After it’s approved, you’ll start working, and you won’t feel bored then.”

“What kind of work will I do?”

“Usually, you’ll be assigned a position based on your previous work. If you have any ideas, you can also discuss it with the staff during the handover.”

“Okay, thank you.”

“You’re welcome. I’ll report back now.”

The person was about to leave but turned back after a couple of steps. “By the way, there’s one more thing. The captain is currently on a mission outside and said he wants to meet you when he returns.”

Meet Gu Changzhou?

Most likely, it was about the information she had mentioned earlier. The original owner was indeed an abandoned orphan since childhood, but all those things she said were completely made up based on the original plot. The main purpose was to keep Gu Changzhou and create time for Lu Qiming.

It would be good to meet him, explain everything clearly, and prevent misunderstandings.

She nodded, and the subordinate left with a relieved expression.

Not long after he left, survivors living in the same dormitory building started to return home from work.

The loudspeaker in the corridor announced the time – 18:30.

Jiang Miaomiao was not good at socializing, so she didn’t go out to make new friends. She sat in her room and judged by the sounds and movements that a woman lived on the left side, and a man lived on the right side. They were not very old, likely between twenty and forty years old, and their tone of speech suggested that they had quite demanding jobs and were not in a pleasant mood.

The majority of survivors in the base were either middle-aged or young people. Elderly individuals couldn’t cope with the physical demands, and they were among the first to be infected when the zombies broke out. Although people were reluctant to abandon their children, parents with children had a harder time than others, and the outcome often resulted in the entire family turning into zombies.

It was mentioned in the original text that there were very few newborns in the shelter, and the population growth rate was far lower than the death rate. The government wanted to increase the number of newborns because people were the hope for the future. When they returned to the city, they would be the main workforce for reconstruction.

To achieve this, the government had implemented many measures, including organizing matchmaking events and improving childbirth benefits, but the results were minimal.

Jiang Miaomiao could understand this very well. When everyone was struggling to survive, who would want to have a child and subject them to the same hardships?

After resting in the dormitory for a while, the survivors left their rooms one by one at 7 o’clock, presumably going out to have dinner.

Liu Lan had told her the location of the public canteen in the dormitory building, which was on the third floor. So, Jiang Miaomiao took out the aluminum lunchbox she was given, left Jiang Rou Rou in the room, and followed the crowd to get dinner.

As a former university student, she was familiar with places like the canteen, but upon arrival, she was still shocked by the crowded scene.

Several tens of thousands of people lived in the dormitory area, but there were only two or three canteens. Unlike universities where students could eat outside or order takeout, everyone had to be fed by the canteens. The long queues made her wonder if she could even get food before daybreak.

However, the speed of the canteen’s aunties was much faster than she had imagined. After queuing for a little over an hour, it was her turn.

Jiang Miaomiao looked at the dishes behind the counter and felt like escaping back to the island.

A large bucket of potatoes, a large bucket of radishes.

The radishes had some meat in them, likely radish stew with ribs. However, the proportion of the two seemed like a herd of sheep compared to a sheepdog. She had to squint her eyes to find the tiny portion of meat among the radishes.

The auntie raised her ladle and impatiently tapped the bucket. “Hurry up and decide what to eat, don’t waste time.”

She could only say, “A serving of rice and a serving of radish.”

The auntie completed the order in three seconds. While she was still hesitating whether to get some more potatoes, the card machine already displayed the price – 33 yuan.

“Phew…”

Jiang Miaomiao almost spewed blood.

A meal cost 33 yuan, 100 yuan per day, 3,000 yuan per month.

She had only 2,000 yuan in her card’s credit limit. Wouldn’t she have to go hungry for several days each month?

Sobbing, she thought of going back to the island…

Suppressing the pain in her heart, Jiang Miaomiao swiped her card and returned to the dormitory with a pitiful meal. The portion was barely enough for one person, and Jiang Rou Rou was waiting eagerly on the side.

She remembered how Yuan Mubing had given her a steamed bun before and quickly took it out to share with Jiang Rou Rou. She managed to eat until she was barely satisfied.

In the original text, they often mentioned the food shortages in the base, but she didn’t pay much attention to it then. Now she experienced it firsthand.

What should she do in the future? Be hungry every day?

Although she brought back a lot of seafood, she had no stove or pot, so she couldn’t eat them.

After finishing her meal, she was worried about how to wash the dishes when someone called for water from outside.

She remembered what Liu Lan said about the limited water supply, so she quickly took a bucket and went to the bathroom to collect water from the tap.

%@&#…

The faucet sounded like an old person with asthma, making all kinds of weird noises, and the water flow was pitifully small. She squatted beside it for half an hour and only managed to collect a half-bucket of cold water, after which the water stopped flowing from the tap.

Half an hour later, hot water was supplied.

Jiang Miaomiao brought a thermos and collected a small bottle of hot water. The water was sourced from a snowy mountain and had a good taste, with a sweet feeling and very few impurities.

However, the amount was too little. It wasn’t even enough to drink, so how was she going to take a shower?

She poured a little hot water into a basin and added a little cold water, barely wetting a towel to wipe her body and face.

Just as she was about to go to bed, the neighbor from next door knocked on her door.

“You’re the new one, huh? Oh, and such a chubby dog too.”

When she heard the word “chubby,” her whole body stood on end, and she hurriedly explained, “Not chubby, not chubby, just thick fur. It’s virtually chubby; there isn’t much flesh.”

The other person didn’t seem to mind much and chatted with her, pulling her in all directions for over an hour, eventually leaving with a big salted fish and two dried scallops.

Finally getting rid of the person, Jiang Miaomiao heaved a sigh of relief and made up her mind in her heart: she would avoid interacting with others in the future.

She simply wasn’t cut out for this. It was fine to banter with the straightforward and naive Lu Qiming, but when it came to real socializing, she would end up getting taken advantage of.

Late into the night, the heating seemed to have cooled down a lot. She wrapped herself tightly in the blanket, still shivering.

Seeing Jiang Rou Rou also shivering on the cushion, she pulled it onto the bed and hugged it as they slept together.

Jiang Rou Rou was solidly chubby, and its round belly pressed against her. It gurgled inside, obviously not having eaten enough.

She touched its damp nose and whispered, “Do you miss him?”

Jiang Rou Rou blinked.

She buried her head in its white fur, feeling uneasy. “I miss him so much.”

Since the time he chose to return during the zombie tide, the two of them had never been apart. They were inseparable during meals and sleep.

Suddenly, when he wasn’t beside her during sleep, she felt really uncomfortable.

Jiang Miaomiao twisted her fingers around the simple silver ring and imagined his silly appearance, getting up in the middle of the night to polish the ring. Tears silently soaked into the dog’s fur.

On the fifth day after moving into the base, her official identity card arrived.

On the day she received her identification card, someone from the Human Resources Bureau came to arrange her work. The visitor was a gentle young lady holding a computer, asking her, “What did you do before? Do you have any preferences for work?”

“I was a student before and only did part-time work at a restaurant. As for preferences…” Jiang Miaomiao felt a little embarrassed but answered truthfully, “Do you have anything easier?”

Leaving Lu Qiming was already heartbreaking, and if she had to take on a laborious job where she couldn’t even eat enough and felt exhausted every day, life would become unbearable.

The young lady couldn’t help but smile and nodded, “Okay, let me find something for you.”

She typed on the keyboard for a while and then pushed the screen towards Jiang Miaomiao, saying, “How about this? A canteen cleaner. Mainly responsible for cleaning up the leftover food after everyone finishes eating. The working hours are not long, just about two hours after each meal, which sums up to about six hours of work per day. However, you will finish later than others.”

Two hours of work after meals… Dinner would last until 8 or 9 pm, so she wouldn’t finish until at least 10 pm. By then, the hot and cold water supply would have stopped, and she couldn’t do without water.

Jiang Miaomiao asked, “Is there anything else?”

“Yes, there’s this – childcare worker. The main job is taking care of children under five years old. The requirement is to be healthy, physically strong, and patient and attentive. You will have to work in shifts, with a three-shift system of eight hours each.”

This one sounded pretty good, but she had never taken care of children before, and her patience was just average. If a group of children cried in front of her… Oh God, just kill her.

“Um… Is there anything else?”

The young lady helped her look again. Besides medical and weapons-related jobs, there were hardly any positions that required technical expertise in the base. Most of the jobs were basic and essential positions.

After searching around, none of the options seemed better than the others, so in the end, she circled back and chose to be a childcare worker.

The young lady said that the children didn’t have many toys, so if her dog was well-behaved, she could bring it along to play with them. Also, there was a private canteen in the kindergarten, which could provide a work meal.

This was undoubtedly a great temptation for her.

Leaving her with a work certificate, the young lady left, instructing her to go for orientation the next day.

Thinking that she would start working soon, Jiang Miaomiao felt a little nervous. She took out her identification card and decided to call Yuan Mubing.

It was daytime, and everyone was at work, so there weren’t many people in front of the communication device.

She dialed Yuan Mubing’s number and waited for a while before he answered.

He seemed to be outside, and the cold wind was blowing.

“Jiang Miaomiao? What’s the matter?”

“I don’t have the contact information of the laboratory, and I want to confirm the visiting time for this month.”

“Sure, I’ll have someone transfer you.”

After waiting for a few minutes, a soft female voice came from the other end.

“Hello, this is the research laboratory of Professor Chen Hong.”

Jiang Miaomiao introduced herself and stated her purpose. The person on the other end asked her to wait for a moment and then handed the phone to Chen Hong himself.

She had an impression of him; he was a heavyweight in the base responsible for vaccine development, a pillar of the medical field.

After discussing for a while, they set a meeting time – five days later.

Before hanging up, Jiang Miaomiao asked specifically, “Can I increase the number of visits? I can cooperate with all your requirements as long as I can see him.”

The other person fell silent for a moment and said, “I can understand your feelings, but… I’m sorry.”

“How is his current condition?”

“For now, it’s looking good. You can rest assured.”

Chen Hong was busy and hung up the phone after finishing the conversation.

With nothing to do, Jiang Miaomiao stood in the corridor, looking ahead.

People’s lives had undergone earth-shattering changes, but life continued, and they hadn’t turned into robots due to the pressure of survival.

A mother who had just finished her night shift was scolding her child on the left side of the dormitory. Behind a window on the right, a Siberian Husky stuck its head out, envious of Jiang Rourou’s freedom.

She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, encouraging herself in her heart.

Lu Qiming was working hard, and she had to work hard too. At the very least, she couldn’t let him worry.

The next day, Jiang Miaomiao got up early, went to the canteen, and drank a bowl of 15-yuan mixed grain porridge. Then, she took Jiang Rourou and took the elevator to go to work.

The kindergarten was not far from her, so she arrived quickly.

The moment she walked in, she felt fortunate that she had chosen to work here.

The base was everywhere with a cold and rigid atmosphere, but this place was different.

The walls were painted with murals in bright colors, and the tables, chairs, and doors were all in cartoon shapes.

A group of children was playing games in the classroom, and their laughter was like tinkling silver bells, instantly lifting Jiang Miaomiao’s spirits that had been suppressed for several days.

A young female teacher noticed her and walked over to inquire, “Hello, may I ask who you are…”

Jiang Miaomiao handed over her work certificate, and the other party understood, bringing the principal over.

The principal introduced the kindergarten to her and then assigned her tasks.

As a newcomer, not familiar with the staff yet, she was initially responsible for cleaning the classrooms and helping in the small canteen.

Jiang Rourou accompanied the children to play.

At nine o’clock in the morning, Jiang Miaomiao received a mop and a cloth and began cleaning the classrooms one by one.

Two hours later, the canteen started to cook.

She immediately put down what she was doing and rushed to help peel potatoes.

It was not untrue to say that she was tired after a whole day of work, but on her way back, Jiang Miaomiao felt fulfilled.

She worked for the base, and the base provided her with food and accommodation.

With each passing day, she was one day closer to seeing Lu Qiming.

This kind of goal-oriented life truly made her feel secure.

The day was almost over, and she only needed to work for four more days before she could go see Lu Qiming.

“Keep going!”

She shouted at her own reflection on the subway window, attracting countless surprised glances from others.

Rotating shifts were changed weekly in the kindergarten. On the agreed day, Jiang Miaomiao exchanged shifts with her colleagues.

She would visit Lu Qiming during the day and go back to work at night.

On the first night, she was so excited that she couldn’t sleep, constantly imagining the scene when she would see him.

What should she say? Should she bring him a gift?

But firstly, she didn’t have anything at hand, and secondly, he was in isolation, so she didn’t know if she could send anything to him.

The neighbor next door heard that she was going to see her husband, so she specially lent her a new dress.

The neighbor used to be a fashion magazine editor before the apocalypse, but now she works as a female worker in a tissue paper factory. When she fled, she didn’t bring anything except for a suitcase of her most cherished clothes and shoes.

The dress she lent to Jiang Miaomiao was Chanel’s latest model.

Jiang Miaomiao put on makeup using her cosmetics, changed into the dress, layered it with a snow-proof coat, carried four preserved but uncertainly preserved salted duck eggs, and held Jiang Rourou as she took the subway for half an hour to the other side of the base to meet Lu Qiming.

The laboratory was much stricter. As soon as she entered the gate, her salted duck eggs and the dog were stopped, and she was told that they were not allowed to be brought inside.

Jiang Miaomiao had no choice but to leave them at the front desk first, then entered the base alone and found the meeting room they had mentioned.

The room was about twenty square meters, with a glass wall dividing it into two parts.

The heating inside was sufficient, so she took off her snow-proof coat and tidied her hair while looking at her reflection in the window.

Before she could put her hand down, the door on the other side opened.

Lu Qiming, whom she had been thinking about for a whole week, walked in from outside, wearing white clothes and pants, revealing a weak but radiant smile to her.

“Miaomiao.”

His voice came through the intercom, and her nose felt sour; she almost cried.

Smile, she had to smile, not to make him worry.

Jiang Miaomiao sat on the chair and grinned foolishly, “Hehe, am I clever? I specifically chose the daytime so that I can see you clearly, without it being dark.”

Lu Qiming’s eyes turned red.

“Yes, very clever.”

Looking at his appearance, she felt extremely uncomfortable, so she quickly changed the subject.

“Do you think my dress is beautiful? It’s from Chanel.”

Lu Qiming’s mouth almost reached his ears, but he couldn’t say anything.
