To be precise, Lu Qiming escaped.
The laboratory had been relocated to the city, and he had completed all the tasks he had agreed upon. He could have left directly, but the government was preparing for a post-war commendation ceremony to boost morale and praise the heroes, acknowledging everyone’s efforts.
As someone who had sacrificed his body, risked his life to assist experts in developing the vaccine, he was expected to be part of the commendation.
Furthermore, everyone was curious about his appearance and filled with anticipation.
The commendation ceremony was scheduled for tomorrow, and Lu Qiming was staying at a guesthouse, enjoying the highest level of treatment.
However, after much thought, he decided to escape.
Holding a few cigarettes, he sneaked out of the guesthouse when no one was paying attention and took a random black taxi.
Following the address information provided by Jiang Miaomiao during their previous phone call, he found his way.
As they sat together to enjoy the braised pork, he revealed his experience of running away.
Jiang Miaomiao didn’t believe it.
“The government wants to honor you as a hero?”
“Yeah.”
“Don’t you want to be honored?”
Lu Qiming nodded, his face expressing “high moral principles.”
Jiang Miaomiao looked disdainful and took the opportunity to snatch the largest piece of meat from the plate.
“You must be crazy from your time at the laboratory. Using such words to deceive me, do you think I’m a fool?”
He intercepted her chopsticks and put the meat into his mouth.
“Whether you are a fool or not is uncertain, but this is definitely true.”
“Impossible.”
Jiang Miaomiao insisted, “If it’s true, why did you run away? Didn’t you say that no man doesn’t want to be a hero? You wanted to live in a luxurious mansion, drive a sports car, be respected by everyone, and be embraced by beautiful women. There were charming and sexy women… Were these things I dreamt about?”
Lu Qiming chuckled, pinching her chin and giving her a kiss.
Her whole face wrinkled with disgust because both of them had oil smeared all over their mouths.
“I did say those things, but I have come to my senses now. The vastness of the world can’t compare to the comfort of my own home. All the beautiful women can’t compare to my silly and adorable wife.”
Jiang Miaomiao pushed him away, “Who’s your silly and adorable wife?”
“Guess.”
Just as she was about to give him a punch, they heard a knock on the door.
Both of them turned their heads towards the door. Jiang Rou Rou sensed the presence of outsiders and pricked up her ears alertly.
“Maybe it’s a neighbor coming to borrow something.”
Jiang Miaomiao put down her chopsticks and went to open the door. Standing outside were two tall and big unfamiliar men.
Before she could ask, the men politely explained their identity.
“You must be Miss Jiang Miaomiao, right? Hello, we are General Xu’s assistants, and he is in charge of the commendation ceremony in two days.”
Jiang Miaomiao was puzzled, “General Xu? Which General Xu?”
The man laughed, “Are you kidding? Among the survivors, General Xu is the most famous one.”
A face flashed in her mind, and she immediately covered her mouth in astonishment.
General Xu… He was a true leader, already in the State Council before the war.
Seeing that she understood, the man continued to introduce themselves.
“Because Mr. Lu Qiming suddenly disappeared without informing us, we were worried about his safety. After investigating, we found that he came here, so we specially came to check. Is he here?”
Damn, so he really escaped?
Jiang Miaomiao quickly nodded and said that he was here, inviting them in.
Lu Qiming, who was busy devouring the meat, awkwardly stopped and cleared his throat, pretending to be calm as he wiped the corners of his mouth.
The assistant smiled, “It seems like you have recovered quite well.”
Lu Qiming coldly asked, “What are you here for? My contract with Chen Hong has already ended, and now I have my freedom.”
“Don’t worry, we are not here to arrest you. General Xu just hopes that you will consider attending the commendation ceremony. Because of you, we were able to research the vaccine so quickly and return to the city. You should have a place at the commendation ceremony; otherwise, it would be a great pity.”
Jiang Miaomiao walked to the table and added, “They came to invite you specially, so just go. It’s a great opportunity.”
This was the government’s recognition of his contributions. Lu Qiming had been troubled by his unsavory past, but as long as he went through the commendation ceremony, he could hold his head high wherever he went in the future.
The assistant glanced at Jiang Miaomiao and recalled something.
“Also, General Xu hopes that both of you can return to work and serve the country.”
“Both of us?” She pointed at herself, “Including me?”
“Exactly. Mr. Lu has rich combat experience and should not waste such strong abilities. You were part of the rescue team before and performed well. Most of the work to rebuild the city is basic labor, and it would be a pity for both of you to stay here. While the zombies within our country have been cleared, other countries are still in dire straits and need our help.
General Xu hopes that both of you can join the rescue team and help the survivors in other countries along with other outstanding soldiers.”
No wonder they insisted on bestowing him with the title of hero. They wanted to offer him a sugar-coated pill to make him sacrifice his life…
Jiang Miaomiao decisively changed her mind and said to Lu Qiming, “I support you, don’t go.”
Assistant: “…”
Lu Qiming smiled and winked, pointing his thumb at her.
“See that? My boss has spoken. I’m not going. Now, please leave.”
The assistant’s mouth twitched, and he asked Jiang Miaomiao, “Miss Jiang, do you have any concerns? If you are worried about danger, there’s no need. The methods for dealing with zombies are already mature, and casualties are minimal. Both of you are precious warriors, and the government will provide all support to ensure your safety.”
Jiang Miaomiao shook her head.
“We waited for three or four years to finally reunite. There are definitely people among the survivors who are stronger and more willing to dedicate themselves. You should focus on them. As for me and him… we want to have a normal life as a couple.”
The assistant asked, “Are you sure you have thought this through? If you withdraw now, you will become ordinary citizens. But if you join the rescue team, gain some merits, your retirement life will be on a completely different level.”
At present, society is still in a state of communal consumption, and there’s no need for currency. But once productivity improves, the population increases, and life stabilizes, it will return to a pre-apocalyptic state. At that time, wealth disparity, work capabilities, and social status will gradually emerge, and situations like a general and a janitor eating together at the same table will no longer happen.
They refused the rescue team’s invitation. Their future life would likely be working hard, earning money, raising children, with some small happiness mixed in the hustle and bustle – busy and ordinary.
But what’s the big deal?
To live in a world where they have a house, food to eat, water to drink, electricity to use, and not worry about zombie attacks, it was their biggest dream.
Now that their dream was within reach, she wouldn’t trade it for all the riches in the world.
Jiang Miaomiao’s gaze was firm as she nodded.
“I’m sure. You can go back and convey our gratitude to General Xu on our behalf,” Jiang Miaomiao said firmly.
Seeing their determination, the assistant had to go out to the corridor and make a phone call to his superiors.
A few minutes later, he returned and said to them, “General Xu understands your thoughts. However, Mr. Lu has spent a long time in the laboratory, undergoing surgery and drug injections. Although the recent medical examination showed that he is healthy, there are still concerns about the potential long-term effects on his body. So, in two days, someone will come to take care of your daily life. If you have any problems or needs in the future, you can talk to him, and he will help you.”
This was indeed a great arrangement.
Jiang Miaomiao thanked them and saw them off.
There were windows in the corridor, and outside, the stars filled the sky.
Under the bright streetlights, there were children holding their parents’ hands, jumping and frolicking during their evening stroll.
She took a deep breath of fresh air, feeling so good.
However, when she turned back to the living room, all that was left for her was an empty plate.
Lu Qiming was unapologetic, “Your cooking is just too good, and I couldn’t resist.”
Jiang Miaomiao asked, “Are you full now?”
“Not yet,” he licked his lips like an obedient child.
She picked up the empty plate and said, “Wait, I’ll make another portion for you.”
Thankfully, she hadn’t used up all the meat.
Lu Qiming complied, sitting obediently in the chair. Suddenly, he remembered something and ran after her, holding the bowl in his hands.
“Don’t go, leave the meat juice for me to mix with rice.”
The juice from the braised pork was sweet and fragrant, but a bit greasy. For him, who had been eating light food for several years, it was just right.
Jiang Miaomiao had no choice but to leave the plate for him and went alone to the kitchen to cook.
She used almost half of the ingredients she had received to satisfy the appetites of the three people in the house.
After eating and drinking enough, and taking a bath, the two of them crawled onto Jiang Miaomiao’s small and pitiful single bed.
The bed was 1.5*1.8 meters, and Lu Qiming found it difficult to get comfortable. Either his head had to lie comfortably, while his feet dangled, or his feet had to be comfortable, while his head was elevated.
After adjusting for a while, it was still uncomfortable, and he couldn’t help but complain.
“This bed is too small.”
Jiang Miaomiao’s forehead was against his arm, and she rolled her eyes.
“Who told you to come back without giving me any notice? Now all the furniture stores are closed, and I won’t have time to change the bed.”
He hugged her with a smile, putting his feet on her, finally feeling a bit more comfortable.
“No need to change it, this is fine.”
Jiang Miaomiao also thought it was fine, but he was too heavy. After a few minutes, half of her body had gone numb. She pushed him and said, “You’re crushing me.”
Lu Qiming heard the word “crushing” and got a bit excited.
“I’ve been vaccinated too.”
“Huh?”
“The CCI virus in my body has been completely eliminated.”
“……So?”
“Even if we live together day and night, there’s no need to worry about getting infected.”
“Is that so?” Jiang Miaomiao nodded, “That’s good, let’s sleep.”
Lu Qiming: “…”
After she finished speaking, she closed her eyes, leaving him alone, incredulous.
After enduring for a while, he couldn’t hold back any longer and poked Jiang Miaomiao’s plump cheek, which was much fuller than before.
“Hey, wake up.”
She mumbled sleepily, “What’s wrong?”
“We’ve been apart for three years, and even though we occasionally met during that time, it was always under surveillance.”
“Mm.”
“Now I’m healthy, so you don’t need to worry about me infecting you.”
Lu Qiming paused and asked, “You understand what I mean, right?”
Jiang Miaomiao replied, “I don’t understand.”
“… ” He leaned close to her ear and whispered a few words.
Jiang Miaomiao waved her hand like shooing away a fly.
“I can’t hear what you’re saying. I had a long day at work today, so tired, let’s sleep.”
After saying that, she closed her eyes again.
The long-awaited night of reunion turned out to be like this. Lu Qiming couldn’t express his frustration, but he didn’t want to disturb her either. He had no choice but to close his eyes with regrets.
Not long after, drowsiness overcame him. Suddenly, a hand slipped into his shirt and started groping around.
Lu Qiming: “What are you doing?”
Jiang Miaomiao said confidently, “I’m touching you.”
“Didn’t you say you were tired?”
“Even if I’m tired, I can’t neglect you.”
The drowsiness that had just come over Lu Qiming vanished without a trace. He suppressed his impulse and said, “Then you can’t back out.”
She responded to him with action – kicked the blanket away and climbed on top of him.
Lu Qiming: “…So enthusiastic?”
She turned on the bedside lamp, lifted his t-shirt, but instead of making any moves as he had expected, she carefully examined his body.
Lu Qiming felt a bit awkward and pulled his shirt back down.
“What are you looking at?”
“Don’t move.”
She glared at him, and he could only withdraw his hand and try to maintain a calm posture as she observed him.
He had become much thinner, and his muscles were not as strong as before.
The most terrifying thing was the multitude of scars left by surgeries all over his body.
She looked at his thigh where the huge wound that almost took his life used to be, but now it was nowhere to be found.
Lu Qiming saw her puzzled expression and explained, “Before, I had the cci virus in my body, which made my wounds heal quickly without leaving scars. After I received the vaccine, my healing ability returned to that of an ordinary person.”
Jiang Miaomiao exclaimed, “So, you’re starting to age now?”
Lu Qiming hadn’t thought about this question yet. After pondering for a while, he said, “I suppose so.”
“Is it like an ordinary person, gradually getting older bit by bit, or will you suddenly age like a newly unearthed ancient corpse, completely changing your appearance?”
【The problem of slow updates of the new chapters has finally been solved by using the Huanyuan App, where you can switch to different sources and view the latest chapters of this book on multiple platforms.】
Lu Qiming: “… You’re the one who looks like a newly unearthed ancient corpse.”
Could she insult him any more?
He, a muscular man over 1.8 meters tall, being called an ancient corpse?
Jiang Miaomiao said, “Don’t be anxious. I’m not insulting you. I’m just concerned about this issue.”
If he suddenly went from looking in his twenties to fifties, the visual impact would be quite significant.
She needed to mentally prepare for it.
Lu Qiming held her hand and placed it against his face.
“Touch it, am I aging?”
She carefully felt the skin under her hand, which was firm, smooth, and elastic, feeling excellent, nothing like that of an old person.
Jiang Miaomiao breathed a sigh of relief, pinched his cheek, and said, “That’s great.”
Lu Qiming became interested and asked, “What if my appearance turned into that of an old man, what would you do?”
“I’d probably be worried to death.”
“Worried to death?”
“A person in their fifties, acting like a fool. Unfortunately, I married him, and divorce would be troublesome. I’d be worried to death.”
Lu Qiming’s face darkened, “Well then, you’re thinking about divorcing me.”
Jiang Miaomiao lifted her face.
“Not satisfied?”
He rolled over like a tiger, switching positions with her and gave her a firm pat on her buttocks.
Jiang Miaomiao complained in sorrow, “Domestic violence! This is domestic violence!”
Lu Qiming brushed aside her hair, which was getting in the way, and kissed her neck from the back.
The long night was endless, and the spring colors knew no bounds.
The bed was too small, and after they were done, Jiang Miaomiao maintained her position lying on top of Lu Qiming, exhausted, and fell asleep.
At 7 o’clock in the morning, the piercing sound of the old-fashioned alarm clock broke the silence of the room, waking them both up simultaneously.
Lu Qiming held his head in pain. “Who’s so annoying, calling you so early in the morning?”
Jiang Miaomiao grabbed her phone and yawned, turning off the alarm. “It’s the alarm clock, time to get up for work.”
Work?
She wanted to go to work when he had just returned?
Without thinking, Lu Qiming wrapped his arms around her like iron hoops.
“You’re not allowed to go.”
Jiang Miaomiao replied, “Are you kidding? Let go.”
“Either take leave, find someone to substitute for you, or resign. In any case, you’re not allowed to leave.”
“… Everyone is busy. Who can substitute for me?”
“It’s just teaching primary school math. Anyone can do it. Or do you think those students are more important than your husband?”
Students, husband.
The faces of the two sides appeared in Jiang Miaomiao’s mind. After comparing them for a while, the more she thought about it, the more she got a headache, and she pushed his hand away.
“Don’t be silly. You stay at home and rest, and I’ll be back from work soon.”
Lu Qiming turned into a sticky gum that couldn’t be gotten rid of, he couldn’t be pushed away, and he stuck to her tightly.
She was unable to shake him off, so she reluctantly made two phone calls to the elementary school and kindergarten, requesting leave for herself and Meatball.
As she put down her phone, Lu Qiming happily kissed her on the cheek.
“You’re so good! I love you so much. Lie down, I’ll make breakfast for you.”
After saying that, he excitedly got out of bed and put on his clothes. Jiang Miaomiao asked in confusion, “Aren’t you tired?”
Last night, he had spent more energy than she did.
Lu Qiming lifted his chin smugly, wearing only a large pair of boxers, and went to the kitchen.
Jiang Miaomiao always thought that her cooking skills had improved greatly. In the past, she couldn’t even make dumplings, but now she could make a decent meal with limited ingredients.
However, after tasting the porridge that Lu Qiming cooked, she had to admit that cooking really required talent.
With the same rice and the same pot, his finished product was much more fragrant than hers.
It seemed that in the future, whether it was to be lazy or to enjoy, she had to let him cook more often.
She was already considering how to squeeze him for more cooking, while Lu Qiming was still naively seeking praise, looking at her expectantly.
“Is it delicious?”
Jiang Miaomiao showed a mysterious smile and gave him a thumbs-up.
“Extremely delicious.”
Lu Qiming happily brought the pot over. “If it’s delicious, have more. I cooked a lot.”
After finishing breakfast, the two of them planned to take Meatball for a walk outside. After all, Lu Qiming had been confined in the laboratory for several years, far away from the natural environment.
But the idea was beautiful, and the execution was difficult.
When they were changing clothes, they couldn’t help but kiss, and as they kissed, they ended up on the bed.
By the time they finished, it was already lunchtime.
Lu Qiming seemed tireless and took the initiative to go and make lunch.
Jiang Miaomiao took a bath and lay on the bed, playing with Meatball with a towel, waiting for lunch. She felt that this kind of life was really wonderful.
Having food, drinks, and a man, without having to work, she could live like this for ten years… no, for a lifetime.
After holding it in for several years, Lu Qiming finally had the opportunity to show off his cooking skills. Unable to hold back, he used up all the meager ingredients she had.
The next day at noon, they only had white rice and flour left to eat.
Jiang Miaomiao stood in front of the rice bucket, hesitating whether to go and get more supplies.
Supplies were distributed per person, so theoretically, with one more person, they should get more supplies.
However, when obtaining supplies, children needed to show their student IDs, and adults needed to show their work certificates. They couldn’t just take them for free.
Lu Qiming had nothing, somewhat similar to being a blacklisted individual, which made things a bit troublesome.
As Jiang Miaomiao was still pondering, someone knocked on the door.
Lu Qiming went to open it and looked up to see a familiar face, which made him frown.
Gu Changzhou awkwardly rubbed his nose. “I’ve been sent by the government to solve your living issues.”
Lu Qiming suddenly realized and whistled, turning back to shout, “Miaomiao, come and meet an old acquaintance.”
Gu Changzhou was currently in an awkward situation.
Before returning to the city, he held a high position and had great power. He successfully completed rescue missions as a leader, and he was highly respected in the base.
But after returning to the city, some of the shady things he had done were dug up by several old enemies.
For example, using public funds to build a private refuge, abusing his authority for personal matters, taking advantage of the zombie outbreak to extort officials, and other offenses.
In the past, when he ran his own company, no one dared to say anything about such actions.
But being a public servant was different. After returning to the city, the country needed to reorganize the power system and couldn’t keep people with too many handles.
He was demoted, left with an empty title, stripped of real power, and was no longer in charge of soldiers, only assigned to some auxiliary work.
The person assigning him tasks probably held a grudge against him. The first assignment was to coordinate with Lu Qiming.
Gu Changzhou thought about quitting and setting up his own business like before.
However, considering the current social situation, there was simply no room for entrepreneurship, and if he was caught, he might end up in prison. He had no choice but to bear with it for now.
Lu Qiming welcomed his arrival and, upon learning that his job was to solve all their difficulties, immediately asked him to get food supplies to resolve their food problem.
Under the scorching sun, Gu Changzhou ran for over two hours and got the necessary documents. He handed them to the community administrator and obtained enough food.
Lu Qiming took the bag from his hand, nodding in satisfaction.
“Not bad, not bad. It would be even better if you were faster. Looking forward to your next performance. You can leave now.”
Gu Changzhou, drenched in sweat, “…”
Jiang Miaomiao felt a little guilty and took the initiative to ask, “You haven’t eaten yet, have you? Stay and have a meal with us?”
“Eat with us?”
Lu Qiming interrupted, “He’s a government official; he can’t accept bribes, or he’ll be fired.”
“Is that so?”
“Of course, come on, let’s cook.”
Lu Qiming put his arm around her shoulder, gave Gu Changzhou a victorious look, and used his foot to close the door.
Sweat soaked his clothes, and his stomach growled incessantly.
Gu Changzhou clenched his fist, took a deep breath, and reluctantly left.
Half an hour later, Lu Qiming called him.
“I need a double bed, the sturdier, the better. I need it for afternoon naps.”
He had just arrived at the cafeteria, scavenged some leftover food, and sat down to eat. He hadn’t even warmed the chair when he endured his temper and asked, “Can you wait for half an hour?”
Lu Qiming said, “Who is your superior? Give me their number; I want to complain.”
“…I’ll go right away.”
Gu Changzhou hung up the phone, wolfed down his meal with two others, and ran outside while chewing.
They made one demand after another.
“We want to watch the commendation ceremony and get two seats on-site.”
“We want beef, have it delivered before dinner.”
“We need a refrigerator.”
“There are mice in the house, both of us are scared, come and catch them.”
“You go do this… you go do that…”
In just a month, Gu Changzhou had visibly lost fifteen pounds due to all the running around. Even his former subordinates couldn’t recognize him.
One day, at two in the morning, he finished delivering the new underwear that Lu Qiming asked for. Standing under the empty residential building, he couldn’t hold back any longer and kicked the bike tire hard.
Jiang Miaomiao followed and apologized, “He’s not that difficult to serve; he just can’t swallow the grudge from back then. He was really hurt by you.”
Gu Changzhou sighed self-mockingly, “You’re right, it’s all my fault.”
Everything had its price to pay, and this businessman, who was accustomed to seeking shortcuts, was now facing the consequences.
Jiang Miaomiao suggested, “If you can’t stand it, you can request someone else.”
That would be better for both of them.
But Gu Changzhou shook his head. “No.”
“Why?”
“You are my only family. As long as I can see you often, it doesn’t matter if he makes things difficult for me.”
“…I’ve said it before, I’m not your daughter.”
“You say you’re not, so you’re not? I still think you’re very much alike.”
“We can do a DNA test.”
Gu Changzhou smiled, a hint of cunning on his tired face.
“I won’t do it. As long as I never do it, you might always be my daughter.”
Compared to believing that his daughter had long left this world, he preferred to think that she was still alive.
Whether she recognized him or not didn’t matter, and it didn’t matter if they didn’t live together.
As long as she lived happily, had enough to eat and wear, he would be satisfied.
Jiang Miaomiao, who was good at finding pleasure in life, was very suitable for this role.
After hearing his words, she finally understood why he refused to do the test, and her heart was filled with indescribable emotions. She didn’t know what to say for a long time.
Gu Changzhou ruffled his hair.
“It’s getting late, he wants to eat soup dumplings tomorrow, but the cafeteria won’t make them. I have to rush back and knead the dough. Get some rest early, see you tomorrow.”
“…See you tomorrow.”
Gu Changzhou opened the car door and got in. The car lights blinked twice before slowly leaving the neighborhood.
The next morning, the breakfast table had a plate of steaming soup dumplings.
The dumplings were roughly shaped, obviously made by a novice.
But they were filled generously, with plenty of meat, and were fresh, which was rare.
Lu Qiming used a spoon to scoop up one and wanted to feed Jiang Miaomiao.
She hesitated, “How about… stop torturing him from now on?”
Lu Qiming pursed his lips. “He deserves it; you don’t need to feel sorry for him.”
“I’m not feeling sorry for him. It’s just that it’s been so long, and shouldn’t we start living a normal life?”
For this past month, she had been on leave and hadn’t gone to work at all.
Lu Qiming hadn’t started looking for a new job either.
Everyone else was going to work or school, and they couldn’t just laze around and do nothing.
In such an atmosphere, she felt embarrassed to indulge in leisure activities every day.
Lu Qiming lowered his eyes, pondered for a moment, and nodded. “You’re right.”
“So, what do you suggest?”
“You should quit your job.”
“What?!”
He put down his spoon and walked to the window, looking outside.
There were many people on the roads in the residential area.
Cyclists, drivers of small cars, and pedestrians were all busy going to complete their daily work, like a group of busy ants.
He didn’t want to become one of them.
“The country is encouraging people to engage in agricultural production, right? How about we find a scenic farm, grow some vegetables, raise some chickens, be self-sufficient, and send the surplus to the city? What do you think?”
They would have a small building with a yard full of flowers and vegetables.
Work during the day and rest at sunset. If they got tired, it didn’t matter; nobody would care. They could just lie around like salted fish.
They wouldn’t need to be restrained by anyone or have to deal with the relationships with colleagues and superiors.
Jiang Miaomiao had been going to work day after day for several years and had long become fed up with it. Lu Qiming’s suggestion made her feel excited.
“Is that possible? But where can we find such a farm?”
Lu Qiming turned around with a smile, “That’s simple, let Gu Changzhou figure it out.”
With a phone call, Gu Changzhou arrived before them, ready to take on the new task of finding a farm for them.
During this period, Jiang Miaomiao submitted her resignation application for herself and Meatball.
Unexpectedly, hers was approved quickly, but Meatball’s was rejected and took a lot of effort to convince them. She promised that she would bring it back to the school to play whenever she had time, before it finally regained its freedom.
Lu Qiming began preparing for the farm, going out every day to get seeds and eggs.
About a week later, Gu Changzhou brought good news.
They found the farm.
It wasn’t too far away, just a couple of hours’ drive outside the city.
Being in the mountains, the land was at a higher elevation, so when the city was devastated by floods, the farm managed to escape unscathed.
According to Gu Changzhou’s description, the farm covered several hundred acres.
It had orchards, fish ponds, rice fields, and a simple processing workshop, which should be sufficient for self-sufficiency.
That day, they packed up their belongings, brought all the things that Lu Qiming had searched for the farm, and set off in their car.
Jiang Miaomiao sat in the backseat with Meatball and felt a bit worried.
“Can we really use that farm? What if the original owner comes back or the government takes it away?”
Lu Qiming glanced at Gu Changzhou.
“Don’t worry, if it’s taken away, we’ll just find another one. It will definitely be fine, right?”
Gu Changzhou gripped the steering wheel, not bothering to look at him, and answered Jiang Miaomiao’s question.
“I’ve investigated it already. The original owner died during the zombie outbreak. The country is currently encouraging people to invest in agricultural production. In a few days, I’ll help you get the necessary documents, and this farm will become your property.”
Hearing this, she felt relieved and turned to look outside the window, unable to help but exclaim, “It’s so beautiful!”
The car drove into a valley, and the summer trees and lush grass came into view, like a green wave rushing towards them, massaging their eyes with a pleasant scenery.
The road hadn’t been maintained for a long time, and weeds had grown to the middle of it.
The car wheels rolled over them, crushing the leaves, and the air was filled with a refreshing scent of grass and woods.
A gentle breeze blew into the car, lifting her hair.
Both men in the front seats couldn’t help but raise their heads to catch a glimpse of her reflection in the rearview mirror, only to accidentally meet each other’s gaze. They each snorted coldly and looked away.
At 10 in the morning, they arrived at their destination.
They found the farm behind a dense patch of ivy, with a rusty iron gate.
There was a large copper lock on the gate, but Gu Changzhou had removed it during his last visit.
He parked the car, carried the bags, and kicked open the iron gate, leading the way.
The two men and the dog followed behind, curiously stepping into their new home.
The farm was situated between two hills, with plenty of open space in the front and back.
The slopes on the left and right sides were orchards, planted with bayberries and pomegranates. There was a pond in front and rice fields in the back.
A small stream meandered in front of the mountain, providing easy access to water.
The main part of the farm consisted of three buildings.
One was a processing workshop, where they could extract oil, cotton, and hull rice.
Another was a warehouse, used for storing the harvested fruits and grains.
The last one was the living quarters, with only two floors, quite small, but equipped with a kitchen, bathroom, living room, and everything they needed.
There was also a group of shacks that used to be for raising chickens and cows, but they had disappeared somehow.
After everyone visited all the facilities, Gu Changzhou looked expectantly at Jiang Miaomiao.
“How is it? Not bad, right?”
Jiang Miaomiao frowned, “It’s good, but it has been abandoned for too long. There’s grass everywhere, and the houses leak water. It will take a lot of effort to tidy up.”
“What’s there to worry about? We have a general here who will take care of all the dirty and tiring work alone.”
Lu Qiming leaned on Jiang Miaomiao and looked at Gu Changzhou with a raised chin.
“Right, Xiao Gu?”
Don’t be angry… Don’t be angry… Everything is for the child.
Gu Changzhou took several deep breaths, suppressed his emotions, and smiled, “Miaomiao, you rest. I’ll tidy up.”
