Can’t Believe a Man’s Words
Bang—thud.
The sound of hooves echoed above their heads, snapping the two of them back to their senses.
Lin Chuan lifted his head, his breathing unsteady. In the dim light of the kerosene lamp, he noticed his little wife’s flushed face, her gaze hazy, her small lips reddened and irresistibly adorable.
More importantly, the way she looked—slightly breathless, as if she had just been thoroughly teased—was unbelievably alluring. For a moment, Lin Chuan had the urge to take her right there on the spot.
But no—that wouldn’t do. It was far too cold outside; his little wife couldn’t handle it.
No—more importantly, he couldn’t do something so beastly.
But she was so soft… If he didn’t hold her, she might just collapse to the ground.
And it seemed she had no strength left. He couldn’t help but ask worriedly, “Su Su, are you alright?” He swallowed as he spoke, feeling an even stronger urge to overwhelm her.
Su Su finally regained a bit of clarity. Embarrassed, she raised her little fists and lightly pounded him, which only made Lin Chuan feel more heated. He rubbed his nose and said, “Let’s go back… Don’t be like this again, or I won’t be able to hold back.”
“Like what?” She looked up at him, confused, genuinely not understanding.
Lin Chuan grabbed her small hands, then suddenly lifted her into his arms. Without saying another word, he stepped on the lamp to extinguish it and strode back down the mountain.
“W-what are you doing?” This man was a little scary—she almost wanted to run away.
Fortunately, he didn’t do anything else, just carried her down the mountain.
“Wait, your injury—”
“It’s fine.”
“How is that fine?”
Su Su struggled to get down, looking like she might cry if he didn’t let her go. Helpless, Lin Chuan set her down and said, “It’s dark. Hold onto me.”
“Mm.” She really did need to hold onto him—the path was hard to see, and she was afraid of falling.
But her heart was still racing. What had just happened was far too intense.
Something like that… better not happen again.
Yet she couldn’t shake the feeling that she had just been targeted by a beast. It was a little frightening.
Luckily, when they got back, they first went to the front courtyard to set off fireworks and eat yuanxiao. After playing for a while, they could return.
Everything went smoothly at first. Su Su ate the delicious yuanxiao and felt quite satisfied. She hadn’t even had enough and took some more, planning to eat them later in the back courtyard when she got hungry.
Mother Lin naturally agreed and packed her a whole large bowl.
After dinner came the time for everyone to gather together and chat happily. Su Su really liked this kind of atmosphere, but unexpectedly, Lin Chuan disliked it. He picked up the bowl, pulled Su Su along, and said, “Let’s go back. It’s cold.”
Cold?
It was cold every day at this time—spring hadn’t arrived yet.
But for some reason, Su Su suddenly felt a little uneasy.
Still, she was no match for Lin Chuan’s strength and was led home like a small puppy.
Once they got back, Lin Chuan didn’t cling to her. Instead, he went to fetch firewood and heat the kang.
Su Su paused for a moment but didn’t think much of it. She took a few frozen pears, put them in a basin, and placed them on the kang to thaw—they’d be ready to eat soon. There was no TV or computer in this era, so she could only read. Luckily, they had candles today, so it was bright enough to read. Normally, they went to bed early and ended up fooling around, but today it seemed they could stay up a bit longer.
Before long, Lin Chuan said, “I’ve heated some water. Let’s wash.”
So considerate?
In the middle of winter, bathing was very cold, so she usually just wiped herself down. Since coming here, she had only bathed a few times.
Since the water was ready, she decided to wash. She drew the curtains, then brought the largest wooden basin into the room.
Of course, she wouldn’t let an injured Lin Chuan carry water for her, so she went outside to scoop it herself. Lin Chuan didn’t stay idle either and helped adjust the water temperature.
Soon the basin was full. Su Su left Lin Chuan outside and said, “Wait out here for a bit. I’ll finish washing first.”
“Mm,” Lin Chuan said. “I’ll wash outside too.”
“Okay.” Su Su thought he meant washing his hair and didn’t pay much attention.
She undressed, took out her shower gel, shampoo, and body lotion from her bag, and began washing in the basin. Luckily, she had even brought a long scrubbing cloth, so she could clean her back herself. Otherwise, she’d be too embarrassed to ask Lin Chuan for help.
But the water grew colder as she washed. After finally cleaning herself, she used the remaining water to wash her hair. Then, after drying off quickly, she jumped onto the kang, wrapped in warmth, and applied body lotion.
Her skin, rarely exposed to sunlight, was a bit dry, so she needed the extra moisture.
Just as she was applying lotion to her feet, Lin Chuan knocked on the door. “Are you done? I need to pour out the water.”
The basin was large, so it had to be emptied in batches.
But putting clothes on while still damp would be uncomfortable.
So Su Su gathered her courage. “Wait a moment.” She wrapped herself in a blanket, opened the door, then quickly climbed back onto the kang and curled up to the side. “You pour the water first.” She planned to put on her nightclothes afterward.
The moment Lin Chuan stepped inside, he knew his wife was naked under the blanket. It seemed she was ready too… otherwise…
The more he thought about it, the more heated he felt. He went out to pour the water and clean the basin. But when he returned, he saw that Su Su had already put on her “nightclothes” and was making the bed.
So he had misunderstood…
Should he have acted earlier?
If he had known, he shouldn’t have bothered with the water—he should’ve gone straight onto the kang.
Still, Lin Chuan held himself back. He finished everything properly, then latched the door and climbed onto the kang. “Let’s sleep. It’s already past eight.”
“Mm. You bathed? Your wound didn’t get wet, right?”
Su Su asked casually, but Lin Chuan immediately replied, “I washed everything, but the wound didn’t get wet.”
What did he mean by “everything”?
She curled under the blanket. “Then… aren’t we blowing out the candle to sleep?”
“Mm.” Lin Chuan got under the blanket but didn’t behave. He immediately grabbed her hand. “Wife.”
Here we go again.
She thought he’d behave tonight.
Su Su turned away, not wanting to deal with him. Even though his wound no longer needed bandages, the scar was still too noticeable, and she was genuinely afraid he might worsen it.
Even though it was almost healed, and if they kept waiting he might soon leave again, she was torn—half afraid, half worried.
She thought her refusal was obvious enough that he would give up.
Unfortunately, she underestimated a man’s persistence.
Especially Lin Chuan—he had been holding back for too long. This time, without caring whether she agreed or not, he pulled her into his arms from behind, his large hands beginning to wander.
“Don’t…”
“I’m just touching.”
