Massive Blood Loss
“Why would I care what you do? I just like looking for trouble when I have nothing better to do.” Ever since the two of them had truly become husband and wife, Su Su had grown a little tsundere, always saying the opposite of what she meant. But she also knew Lin Chuan understood her, especially with the way his eyes burned so intensely.
Lin Chuan knew his wife was protecting his dignity, and his heart felt extremely satisfied. He could not help holding her hand and gently squeezing it. “I’ll listen to you in everything.”
“You’re squeezing too hard…”
“I’ll blow on it for you.”
As he blew on it, the two of them somehow ended up kissing. Then the food went cold. Neither of them ate their fill, but they still cleared the table, no longer in the mood to eat.
Still, Su Su was someone who handled serious matters. After eating, she went out to find Lin Donghe.
No, more accurately, she found Lin Hai and asked him to call Lin Donghe out. The two of them stood at the edge of the village to talk.
There was no one around. In the middle of winter, even during the first lunar month, very few people wandered outside.
“Comrade Su, may I ask why you called me out?” Lin Donghe found it strange that Su Su would suddenly look for him.
Su Su sighed. “I know you and Educated Youth Qin have feelings for each other. And on the sixteenth, I saw her go to the county. When she came back, her face was pale, and she was retching as if she wanted to vomit. Although she tried to hide it, I could still tell she might be pregnant. If this gets out, it won’t be good for her or for you, so after thinking it over, I decided to tell you.”
She did not mention Lin Chuan at all, only saying it was her own guess. Let them sort it out themselves. Ideally, they would fight.
“What?”
“I’m a woman, so I’m quite sensitive to these things. Alright, this is all I can say. What you do next depends on you.” She frowned and did not say too much, then turned and ran off.
As she walked away, she thought that according to the book, Lin Donghe really did want that child. But at the time, the female lead had been married to Lin Chuan, so for the sake of their reputations, he could only swallow his anger and watch her get rid of his child.
Now, the female lead had not married Lin Chuan. Since Lin Donghe knew, let’s see how he handled it.
In any case, it had nothing to do with her and Lin Chuan anymore.
When she returned home, Lin Chuan directly carried her onto the kang. Before she could react, the door was closed and the curtains were drawn…
The sky was not even dark yet.
“No, it’s still day—”
“It’s fine.”
“Someone will come.”
“No one will.”
Lin Chuan ignored Su Su’s refusal and pressed her down, doing this and that.
But what they did not know was that someone really had come, and that person had even walked right beneath their window. Unfortunately, Lin Chuan was too excited at the moment to hear the footsteps, and with the curtain drawn, they could not see outside.
After Lin Chuan ran away, Qin Yueyue felt very uncomfortable. After thinking it over, she guessed he was probably afraid of hiding the matter from Su Su and having Su Su cause trouble if she found out. If that was the case, she might as well directly ask Su Su for help. If she openly asked the married couple to help her, then even if rumours spread later, they could help resolve them.
Who would have thought that the moment she reached their window, she would hear very improper sounds coming from inside? The man’s muffled groans and the woman’s restrained soft cries were both extremely clear. Most importantly, Su Su’s voice was pleasant to listen to, twisting and turning in a way that made even Qin Yueyue’s heart pound, despite not being a man.
It was not as if she had no experience, but that day, she had only felt pain and discomfort. Because of the environment, she had not dared make a sound from beginning to end. Comparing it now, she felt that her first time had not been worth it at all. And now she was pregnant too, which only made her more panicked.
As the female lead, she could not stand beneath someone else’s window and keep listening, so she ran away. Dazed and unsure where to go, she unexpectedly ran into her own man, Lin Donghe.
For a moment, she wanted to cry, but she was afraid Lin Donghe would notice something, so she did not make a sound.
Lin Donghe ran over and grabbed her hand, bringing her to the haystack beside the threshing ground. There was a hollow dug into the middle of it, something he had made himself before, hoping he would have a chance to spend time there with his woman.
“You’re pregnant, aren’t you? Why didn’t you tell me? We can figure it out together.”
“How do you know? Did Lin Chuan tell you?”
“Lin Chuan? How would he know?”
Lin Donghe froze and looked at her as if he could not understand. Why did Lin Chuan know about her pregnancy when even he himself did not?
“It wasn’t him?”
“It was Comrade Su…”
“So it was her.” She had not expected Lin Chuan to be such a gossip, actually telling that woman about this. And that woman had gone straight to Lin Donghe. They really were a loving married couple.
But when Lin Donghe saw her cold smile, he knew she must have misunderstood. He said, “I think you’ve misunderstood something. Comrade Su guessed you might be pregnant because she saw you go to the county, and then saw that you looked unwell.”
“Guessed?” How could she possibly have guessed, unless she already knew the two of them had been involved?
Perhaps Lin Donghe had revealed something while caring for Lin Chuan before. Or perhaps she was thinking nonsense. It was also possible Lin Chuan had told her. No matter which it was, Qin Yueyue now found herself unable to either admit it or deny it.
“Don’t talk about other people. I plan to arrange our marriage, then borrow money and go to your family with the betrothal gifts. After the New Year, you can still go to school. When the time comes, I’ll send you there. How about that?”
“How can that work? University takes three years. The child…” She regretted it as soon as she said it. In her urgency, she had accidentally mentioned the child and forgotten to hide it.
Lin Donghe immediately understood. She really was pregnant. He was overjoyed and walked over to hold her hand. “Don’t be afraid. In the future, I’ll be a good father and take good care of the child. Don’t worry.”
She had known this would happen. Qin Yueyue knew the man before her truly loved her, and while she was still in the village, he could still take care of her. But once she went to the city, what could he do?
This child had come at the wrong time.
She shook her head. “We really can’t have this child. Your future and mine are still uncertain. Even if the child is born, it will delay my studies.”
“My mother can help look after the child, and I’ll work hard to earn money to support them…” Lin Donghe also felt guilty. He knew he could not keep up with Qin Yueyue’s footsteps, but he still did not want to admit defeat.
Neither of them could convince the other, so they parted unhappily.
Lin Donghe had once thought that falling in love might be the most beautiful thing in youth. But now, he no longer felt that way. It might have been better to simply accept an arranged marriage, live properly together, have no divided hearts, raise children, and spend a lifetime together like his parents.
Being entangled with Qin Yueyue like this was truly exhausting. But he desired her, desired her body, and liked the way she worked hard to improve herself. Yet he also knew that his current self was dragging her down. He knew it, but he simply could not accept it. In the end, after much struggle, he finally made a decision: they would marry, but they could not keep the child.
If she had a child while studying at university, it would indeed delay her future. But marriage was his final concession.
Of course, Su Su and Lin Chuan knew nothing about this. After the sixteenth day of the first month passed, the New Year was more or less over. Lin Chuan’s injury had mostly recovered too. That morning, he went to call the army and cancel his leave, so there would likely be news within the next couple of days.
Su Su was reluctant to part with him, but she also knew his work was special, so he had to leave. Being able to stay with her for this long was already a gift from heaven. But she had not given up on living with him as a normal married couple, so she really wanted to move to the small city where his army unit was stationed.
When she had gone there before to take care of him, she had asked around a bit and felt it was quite decent. Although it was much dirtier and messier than she had imagined, it was still a city. But in this era, doing private business was still a bit difficult. She would need to wait another two years.
After all, Lin Chuan was a soldier. If he were a farmer, she would immediately choose to become self-employed and make a fortune.
But it would be best to first find a proper job, and that would have to rely on Lin Chuan’s superiors. It was said that military wives who followed their husbands were usually assigned jobs, though it depended on whether any factories needed workers.
And since she already had an official position, arranging work should be easier.
Su Su felt that her status in this era was quite high, so getting a job arranged should not be too difficult, right?
Only, once she moved there, they would first have to rent a place, or see whether Lin Chuan’s unit would arrange accommodation.
As for Lin Chuan, he was not much better. Perhaps because he knew he was about to leave, these past two days, he had been finding every possible way to torment Su Su. What honest man? What quiet, restrained type? He had completely become openly shameless, with a bit of perversion mixed in.
Good stamina, strong body — all of it was truly hard to endure.
Su Su’s constitution was originally good, but even she could not withstand him messing with her like this. She only felt weak all over. Even walking a few steps outside made her waist ache and her whole body sore.
Deadly.
Thinking back to the push-ups he had done during their wedding night, why had she not realised it sooner? She absolutely could not let him have his fill. It was only because he was about to leave and she pitied him, and then…
Then she had ended up sacrificing herself.
“Wife, what’s wrong?”
“Hmph.”
“Don’t worry. I’ll apply for you to accompany the army as soon as possible. When the time comes, I’ll be able to come out and see you once or twice every week.”
“I think it’s better not to.”
“Why?” He had thought his wife would be sad about separating from him. Who would have thought she would say something like this?
“I’m afraid one day my waist won’t be able to take it and will break. It’s better to be farther apart.” Su Su rolled her eyes at him. “If you dare touch me tonight, I’ll kick you until you’re useless.”
“…” Lin Chuan suddenly looked away. “Right, I need to go to the county town to buy a train ticket. Do you want to go?”
“Hasn’t the day you’re leaving not been decided yet? Why are you buying a ticket already?” Su Su was successfully distracted. She had originally been angry, but the moment she heard he was leaving, her attitude instantly softened with reluctant affection.
Girls were probably soft-hearted by nature, Lin Chuan thought while stroking her head. Then he said, “Actually, the order to return to the unit should come tomorrow or the day after. Spring is when new recruits arrive, so it’ll be busy. I plan to buy the ticket ahead of time and take you around the county town while we’re there.”
“What is there to see?” Su Su had lost all desire for cities in this era. She always felt they were not much different from small towns in modern times. The environment was not good either; coal stoves burned everywhere, and even the ducks walking past looked blackened.
Lin Chuan could also tell his wife was different from other girls. She did not particularly yearn for the city. But he still insisted, “I want…”
“What do you want?” Why was he stammering? That was unlike him.
“I think we haven’t taken a proper photo together since getting married. I want to take a bigger photo with you. A couple’s photo.”
“…” She really had not thought of that. She had only been focused on sticking to him.
But wasn’t this usually something women cared about? Why was he, a man, so enthusiastic?
“I don’t mean anything else. I just want to look at you.”
“…” Why did Su Su feel that the more he explained, the more it sounded like he did mean something else?
“You… have your own dormitory?”
“N-no.” Lin Chuan felt that his wife was far too sharp. She had already guessed that he wanted the photo so he could look at it at night when he missed her.
Unfortunately, he would never guess that Su Su had indeed thought of that kind of thing, but she had not thought as shallowly as him wanting to use the photo. She thought he meant something else.
Anyway, the young couple were thinking in completely different directions, but they still decided to go to the county town together.
Mother Lin did not stop them. After all, her son was about to leave, so it was only right for his wife to spend more time with him.
Unexpectedly, on the bus to the county town, they ran into the male lead Lin Donghe and the female lead Qin Yueyue. Since there was no one they knew on the bus, the two were sitting together like a real young couple.
Lin Donghe saw them too and immediately came over to greet them, even giving them a handful of sweets with a smile. “Yueyue and I are getting married. We’re going to the county town to buy some things. These are wedding sweets. Have a few.”
“Mm.” Lin Chuan accepted them coldly and said nothing else.
Su Su, however, was very surprised. She had originally thought the female lead would persuade the male lead to get rid of the child. After all, that was how it had been written in the book. No, actually, in the book, the female lead had merely informed the male lead and then had the child removed.
Unexpectedly, after their interference, the child could actually be kept. Not bad.
That little life was quite innocent too. If it survived, perhaps it might become a rich second-generation heir in the future. Very impressive.
“Congratulations.” Her congratulations were sincere.
Lin Donghe nodded at Su Su, then returned to his seat and gave Qin Yueyue a sweet.
After that, the four of them did not exchange much. They each sat in their own seats. However, the atmosphere was better between Su Su and Lin Chuan. After all, they were a loving married couple with no barriers between them, and they were still in the passionate stage of their relationship. Before long, they were teasing and playing around.
Still, Lin Chuan’s image was too upright, so Su Su only dared make small movements, preserving his noble soldierly image.
The bus ride took quite a while before they finally reached the county. After getting off, the two young couples split up. Su Su and Lin Chuan went to take photos first, while the other pair said they were going shopping, so naturally they didn’t go together.
Knowing they were going to take photos today, Su Su had dressed up nicely and even brought a small tube of lipstick. When they arrived at the photo studio, she used a small mirror to apply it, then smiled at Lin Chuan. “Does it look good?”
“Looks good.”
But… in black-and-white photos, could you even tell her lips were red? Probably not.
Still, he didn’t say anything. Seeing her happy made him happy too, so he just let her be.
The photographer didn’t mention it either. He took their pictures quickly and told them to come back in two days to collect them.
Su Su felt that was a bit slow, but after Lin Chuan explained, she realised it was actually fast. Normally it took four or five days. The staff at the state-run studio said they were sending all the negatives for development that afternoon, which was why it would be ready earlier.
After that, they went to the train station to buy tickets—for the same day they would pick up the photos.
It seemed Lin Chuan really wanted to take that photo with him.
That was fine. If he wanted to take it, then so be it.
Once they bought the tickets, Lin Chuan took her to a restaurant and asked what she wanted to eat.
Su Su suddenly felt like they were on a date. But her timeline felt a bit off—how had they been married this long and only now gone on their first date?
In her excitement, she wanted to order something good, only to realise that restaurants in this era didn’t even have menus. The server came over wiping her hands on her apron and simply asked what they wanted.
Su Su looked at Lin Chuan—ordering out of thin air was hard.
Seeing that his wife wasn’t familiar with eating out, Lin Chuan ordered two baskets of steamed dumplings, two dishes, and a soup. From observing her at home, he had realised she didn’t seem like a typical northeasterner—she liked drinking soup.
That was true. Although Su Su was from the northeast, she had spent years studying and living elsewhere. Her university roommates were from the south, and they often went out to eat together, which gave her the habit of drinking soup with meals.
When the food arrived, they both started eating heartily. Su Su only managed five dumplings before she felt full. People in this era were generous—the dumplings were huge.
The soup, however, was delicious, so she sat there sipping it slowly while watching Lin Chuan finish the rest of the dumplings and dishes.
His appetite was truly impressive—and he ate with gusto. If she hadn’t been so full, she would have wanted another dumpling too.
Still… even the way her man ate looked handsome.
He ate quickly and a lot, yet wasn’t messy at all. He sat upright, with better posture than most. Thinking of his well-built physique, she almost swallowed her saliva.
“Want another one?” Lin Chuan noticed her gaze and thought she was craving food, so he picked up a dumpling and offered it.
“I don’t want it, you eat.”
She wasn’t craving dumplings—she was craving him. But she’d be the one suffering afterward, so she could only keep it to herself.
Just as one was eating and the other watching, someone suddenly rushed in.
A figure darted over, slammed both hands on their table, face pale, and said, “Big brother, do you have money? I need to borrow some—someone’s life is in danger!”
Lin Chuan put down his chopsticks. “What happened?”
“She’s… she’s losing a lot of blood. We urgently need fifty yuan to save her.”
“I have it, I brought money.” As soon as Su Su heard “heavy bleeding,” she understood what had happened.
No matter how much the female lead had wronged them before, a life still had to be saved.
Lin Chuan didn’t ask further. He settled the bill, and the three of them rushed to the hospital together.
Su Su paid the money first, then went with Lin Donghe to wait outside the operating room.
Only then did Lin Chuan ask, “What exactly happened?”
Lin Donghe explained: they had come to the hospital for an abortion. The plan was to terminate the pregnancy, let her rest in the hospital for a couple of days, then go back and get married.
But since the pregnancy was still early, the doctor advised against surgery and instead prescribed abortion medication.
They were told to take the medicine at the hospital and only leave once the process was complete.
At first, everything seemed fine. But later, Qin Yueyue suddenly began hemorrhaging badly.
At this point, Lin Donghe’s voice trembled with fear. If they hadn’t followed the doctor’s instructions and had gone back to the village instead, she might not have survived the trip back to the county.
Though he was the male lead, he was still young. His hands trembled uncontrollably, filled with regret.
“Idiot! How could you let her do this? Are you even a man?” Lin Chuan snapped, grabbing him and shaking him.
Lin Donghe nearly collapsed, eyes red. “Do you think I wanted this? She said the child would ruin her future, so—”
“You’re the man! Why are you letting her lead you around like that?” Lin Chuan paused, then quickly corrected himself after glancing at Su Su. “If she’s right, you listen. If she’s wrong, you absolutely don’t.”
“I had no choice. She said if the child was gone, she’d marry me. I know I’m not good enough for her… so being able to marry her already made me happy. I didn’t expect this to happen…” Lin Donghe covered his face and cried.
Lin Chuan shoved him against the wall. “Useless. If you think you’re not good enough, then hold onto her tightly. Letting her go—that’s what makes you not a man.”
His voice was loud enough that people nearby started looking over.
Su Su nudged him lightly. “Keep your voice down, don’t disturb the doctors.”
Lin Chuan snorted and sat beside her, still fanning himself with his cap in frustration.
He also knew this couldn’t be told to his uncle and aunt—they would be furious.
At that moment, the operating room door opened. A nurse called out, “Who is Qin Yueyue’s family?”
“I am—how is she?”
“She’s lost too much blood and needs a transfusion. Are there any immediate family members here?”
“No… what do we do?” Lin Donghe was on the verge of collapsing.
“Just the three of you? Then come do a blood match and see if any of you are suitable donors. If not, we’ll have to organise hospital staff to donate.”
Su Su hadn’t expected people in this era to be so willing to help. Just as she was about to follow the nurse, Lin Chuan said, “You stay. If blood is needed, we men will donate.”
“That’s not how it works—it depends on blood type,” Su Su rolled her eyes. All three of them went for testing.
Soon, the results came back. Out of the three, only Su Su’s blood type matched—universal O-type.
Of course it was her.
She even wondered if she had come to this world just to save the female lead once.
Another nurse also matched, so the two of them sat side by side donating blood while chatting.
“It’s rare to see someone as proactive as you. Most people act like donating blood will kill them and don’t dare,” the nurse said casually.
“Actually, donating blood regularly is good for your health—people just don’t know it yet,” Su Su replied. She liked kind-hearted people like this nurse, and the two quickly got along.
