Lin Yao had been at Tengfeng for a week now. Aside from sorting medicinal herbs, Engineer Zhang, who had just woken up with a stiff neck, was still her very first patient.
Lin Yao flipped through her appointment book. It was still as clean as a freshly washed plate. Looks like today would be another leisurely day. Getting paid every day without doing any work really made her feel guilty.
As Lin Yao sighed to herself, she turned on the computer and began organising some files. She planned to upload a “Health Status Test Form” to the community section of the company’s TOS system.
This health test mainly used questions to investigate an ordinary person’s everyday lifestyle habits. Then, based on several possible results, it would analyse the test-taker’s physical condition. If there were any hidden health risks, it could also roughly analyse what type of illness they might have.
Lin Yao had made this test for fun back when she was in university. At the time, she had thought that if she ever opened her own clinic in the future, she would ask patients who came for treatment to complete this test first. Not only would it help analyse the cause of illness in advance, but it would also make patients realise which of their lifestyle habits were unhealthy.
Lin Yao was writing smoothly when a message suddenly popped up from the bottom-right corner of the screen.
**[You have one appointment request.]**
Finally, a patient had come to her door. Excited, Lin Yao opened her appointment book and immediately approved the other party’s booking.
…
International Trade Department.
Liu Bing locked his computer screen, rubbed his immobile arm, and pushed his chair away with his foot as he stood up.
“Liu Bing, are you really not going to the hospital?” the colleague beside him asked with concern.
“I still have to receive the Americans this afternoon. Where would I find the time to go to the hospital?” This was a deal he had worked hard on for a whole month. How could he possibly take leave and go to the hospital at a time like this?
“But you can’t even lift your arm. If you go to the factory this afternoon, you won’t be able to demonstrate the product either.”
“I just booked an appointment with the traditional Chinese medicine health practitioner,” Liu Bing said. “I saw in her column that she specialises in acupuncture and massage.”
“The new Doctor Lin, right? I looked at her résumé. She seems to have just graduated. Her medical skills definitely can’t be that great.”
“It’s just for an emergency. Once I get through today, I’ll go to the hospital tomorrow.” After saying that, Liu Bing covered his aching right arm with his left hand and walked out with a pained expression.
Lin Yao tidied up her desk, then solemnly placed the pulse pillow properly. For this first patient who had excellent taste and had voluntarily booked an appointment with her, Lin Yao vowed to make him feel right at home—no, she should cure him as soon as the medicine was applied.
“Doctor Lin.” Liu Bing looked at the female doctor before him, who was even younger than he had imagined, and could not help feeling a little disappointed.
“You’re Liu Bing, right? Have a seat.” Lin Yao smiled and pointed to the chair beside her. After he sat down, Lin Yao asked, “I saw that you left a note saying your right arm can’t move.”
“Mm. These past few days it was only a little sore, but I don’t know what happened. When I woke up this morning, it suddenly wouldn’t move. Even getting dressed was difficult,” Liu Bing said worriedly.
“Let me take a look.” Lin Yao stood behind Liu Bing and raised her hand to press along his arm, asking him from time to time where it hurt and where it did not.
“Have you lifted anything particularly heavy recently?” Lin Yao asked.
“Something heavy?” Liu Bing thought for a moment and said, “On Saturday, I helped a friend move house and carried a fridge.”
“The weather has been quite hot these days. Have you been leaving the air conditioner on all night?” Lin Yao asked again.
“Yes.” Liu Bing asked doubtfully, “Isn’t it normal to use the air conditioner when it’s hot? Does that have anything to do with my arm not moving?”
“You probably strained your muscle while lifting something heavy. On top of that, you use your computer and phone for long periods, lack exercise, and your shoulders and neck aren’t in good condition either. Then when you slept, the air conditioner was turned up too high and you caught a chill. That’s why your arm is sore and you can’t lift it,” Lin Yao analysed.
“Is it serious?” Liu Bing asked.
“It’s not serious. I’ll give you a massage in a bit. After you go home, apply some heat to it. Pay attention to keeping warm at night, and it will naturally get better after a while,” Lin Yao said.
“Then after the massage, will my arm be able to move?” Liu Bing asked.
“How could it be that fast? It’ll take at least two days,” Lin Yao replied. “You need to pay more attention to it these next two days.”
“Then what should I do? I still have to drive the clients to visit the factory this afternoon and demonstrate the product.” Liu Bing’s face fell.
“Can’t you let someone else go in your place?” Lin Yao asked.
“I’ve been following this case for a whole month. It wasn’t easy for the American clients to finally show interest in signing the deal. I can’t let someone else go in my place.” If his performance was snatched away by someone else, how could he be willing? But if the company lost the client because his demonstration was poor, his boss would not give him a good face either. What should he do?
“Doctor Lin, is there any way to stop the pain? Something that will let me go to the factory this afternoon and demonstrate the product.”
A client he had followed for a month must be very important. Seeing the pleading look in his eyes, Lin Yao’s heart softened for a moment and she said, “How about this? I’ll do acupuncture for you. It can appropriately relieve your pain.”
“Doctor Lin…” Liu Bing said excitedly.
“But…” Lin Yao reminded him, “after the acupuncture, you still can’t put too much force on your arm. If you strain it a second time, it will be very troublesome.”
“Doctor Lin, hurry and do the acupuncture for me. As long as I can get through today, anything is fine,” Liu Bing quickly promised.
Lin Yao had no choice but to give Liu Bing a massage first. Then she took out her acupuncture kit and inserted needles into his arm. Before long, Liu Bing’s arm was covered in fine, thin needles.
“Doctor Lin, I always thought acupuncture was very painful. Turns out it’s just a little sore,” Liu Bing said curiously.
“It feels sore because your meridians are blocked,” Lin Yao replied. “When I was massaging you just now, I noticed that your shoulders and neck are especially stiff. It may not be a big problem while you’re still young, but once you get older, your whole body will ache. You should pay more attention to it in daily life.”
“I know all that, but once work gets busy, who has the time to care?”
“That’s true. Young people these days all use their health to earn money, then use the money they earn to treat their illnesses.” Lin Yao recalled something her teachers often used to say when she was at school.
“There’s no other way. Houses in Shanghai are so expensive. If I want to get married, I can only work like my life depends on it,” Liu Bing said with a smile. “If I can sign this deal this afternoon, I’ll have enough for the down payment.”
Lin Yao smiled and shook her head. When the time was up, she removed the needles and signalled for him to move his arm.
Liu Bing tried moving it and discovered that the arm which had hurt so badly a moment ago that he almost wanted to cry could now move freely. He immediately looked at Lin Yao with pleasant surprise and praised her, “Doctor Lin, it doesn’t hurt anymore. You’re amazing.”
“Acupuncture can only stop the pain. The injury in your arm is still there. Remember what I said. Don’t overexert it,” Lin Yao instructed. “Remember to apply heat when you get home tonight, and also…”
“Don’t catch a chill. I know.” Liu Bing swung his arm happily. “Doctor Lin, once I sign the deal, I’ll treat you to a meal.”
Lin Yao smiled and said, “Then I wish you success.”
Liu Bing ran out excitedly. After returning to the office, he packed up his documents, took his jacket, and prepared to go to the hotel to pick up the Americans for lunch before taking them to visit the factory.
…
Ever since she had seen the R&D Department’s pantry, Lin Yao had completely given up on the pantry on the eighth floor. Who asked the upstairs pantry to have more snacks? Even the quality of the coffee was different. The eighth floor only had instant coffee, while the twelfth floor had freshly ground coffee.
That day, after lunch, Lin Yao took her cup and went to the R&D Department again to freeload coffee. But for some reason, the coffee machine was not working. Lin Yao looked left and right, not knowing what to do.
When Yan Luji entered the pantry with his cup, he happened to see Lin Yao knocking on the coffee machine.
“What are you doing?” Yan Luji asked with a frown.
“Huh?” Lin Yao looked up and found that it was Yan Luji. Her expression was not very good either. “Can’t you see? Making coffee.”
“Is that how you use the coffee machine at home?”
“You…” Why was this person so irritating every time he opened his mouth? Lin Yao took a deep breath. Remembering that he had given her an umbrella that morning, she patiently replied, “This coffee machine seems to be broken. I pressed the switch, but it won’t move.”
Yan Luji looked at Lin Yao, then at the coffee machine. Seeing Lin Yao start smacking the coffee machine again, he could not hold back and walked over. “Move aside.”
Lin Yao glanced at him and moved a few steps to the side. Fine, if you’re so capable, you do it.
Yan Luji checked the coffee machine from top to bottom and did not find any problems. Finally, he crouched down to check the power supply and discovered that the plug was loose. After plugging it back in, he restarted the coffee machine. There was a buzzing sound, and the coffee machine immediately began working.
“It’s fixed?” Lin Yao said in surprise.
Yan Luji swept a glance at Lin Yao, as though he had never seen such a foolish woman before.
Once a cup of coffee had been ground, Yan Luji picked up Lin Yao’s cup and handed it to her, then replaced it with his own.
“Thank you,” Lin Yao said happily.
“No need. I just didn’t want you to break the coffee machine by hitting it and make it unusable for everyone else.”
“You… So what if you know how to use a coffee machine?” Lin Yao said angrily.
“Knowing how to use a coffee machine is nothing impressive, but not knowing how to use one really is stupid.” After saying this, Yan Luji took his freshly ground coffee and turned to leave the pantry.
“You… Whether I know how to use it or not, what does it have to do with you?” Lin Yao considered herself quite sharp-tongued, but for some reason, she could never win against this annoying man.
“You’re right. Whether you’re stupid or not really has nothing to do with me.”
“You… you…” Lin Yao was so angry she stamped her feet. “Drink your coffee then. Drink more of it. Serves you right if you can’t sleep.”
As soon as Lin Yao finished speaking, Yan Luji suddenly stopped and turned around, staring at Lin Yao as he asked, “How do you know I can’t sleep?”
“Hehe…” Lin Yao said with glee. “Your left cheek says insomnia, and your right cheek says kidney deficiency. I’m not blind.”
“You could tell?”
“What about it? Beg me. I’m a kind-hearted person. If you beg me, I’ll help regulate your body,” Lin Yao said proudly.
“Hmph…” Yan Luji gave Lin Yao a cold laugh and turned around, leaving directly.
“Men with kidney deficiency can’t find girlfriends,” Lin Yao shouted loudly from behind him.
“Who? Who has kidney deficiency?” The programmers who had been napping in the office all raised their heads one after another.
Yan Luji shot Lin Yao a sharp glare.
Lin Yao stuck out her tongue and shrank back into the pantry.
This stupid, loud-mouthed woman. Yan Luji was so angry that his face turned green.
