SMP Chapter 16

As soon as Lin Yao returned to the health room, she saw Xiao Dong sitting on the sofa with his legs crossed.

“The employee who fainted has been sent to Doctor Liang,” Lin Yao said, thinking he had come to visit the unconscious employee.

“I already went to see him. Doctor Liang said it’s nothing serious.” Xiao Dong put his leg down and said, “So I came back to continue waiting for you.”

Continue?

“Then, Director Xiao, is there something you need from me?” Lin Yao deliberately asked in confusion. She had only just sent his cousin to gather information the day before yesterday, and now he had come looking for her. What else could it be?

“Why be so distant?” Xiao Dong chuckled cheerfully. “You and Xiao Ming are good friends. Just call me Brother Dong.”

“Brother Dong.” Lin Yao gave a dry laugh.

“Yaobao, I heard Xiao Ming call you that, so I’ll call you that too.”

“As you like.” How could Lin Yao dare object? A boyfriend’s brothers and a girlfriend’s best friends were both existences that could not be offended.

“I heard you’ve taken a liking to our Old Yan?” Xiao Dong asked with a secretive smile.

“Ah, hahaha…” Lin Yao laughed foolishly.

“Good taste.” Xiao Dong slapped Lin Yao on the shoulder. “Tell me, how did you take a liking to him?”

Lin Yao was nearly knocked off balance by Xiao Dong’s slap. After steadying herself, she dawdled and said, “This… how do I explain it? I just… suddenly felt he was quite good-looking, hahaha…”

“Shallow,” Xiao Dong commented. Then he burst into laughter. “But then again… who didn’t start out like that?”

“Yaobao, when that brat Xiao Ming came over the day before yesterday, I was busy going to Hangzhou, so I only briefly told him about Old Yan’s situation. Actually, Old Yan has many good points.” Xiao Dong pulled Lin Yao down to sit and rattled off a whole list of Yan Luji’s virtues. Finally, he concluded, “Don’t look at how Old Yan is now, acting all unapproachable, cold, and sharp-tongued. In reality, when he treats his girlfriend, he is absolutely a warm man. So…”

Xiao Dong held Lin Yao’s hand and encouraged her, “You must persevere and marry Old Yan—no, I mean, pursue him successfully. Understand?”

“Oh.” Lin Yao blinked. Why did she feel like something was not quite right? Had she done something to make Xiao Dong look at her differently? Why did it feel like Xiao Dong cared even more than she did about Yan Luji becoming her boyfriend?

After Xiao Dong left, Lin Yao quietly took out her phone and sent Yue Mingyuan a WeChat message:

[Is there something wrong with your cousin?]

[His brain has never been good.]

Seeing the reply, Lin Yao nodded thoughtfully and felt much more reassured.

At three o’clock in the afternoon.

Lin Yao arrived at the conference room on time with a notebook, paper, and pen. Entering with her was Doctor Liang from the Western Medicine Health Room. The two smiled at each other and sat down separately.

Before long, more than a dozen people gradually entered the conference room. Half of them were wearing wrinkled shirts, and one glance was enough to tell they had not gone home for several days.

Finally, Yan Luji walked in carrying a laptop.

Yan Luji placed the laptop on the conference table, pulled out a chair, and without any warning, began today’s meeting.

“Today, an employee fainted in the office. I don’t want this to happen a second time.” Yan Luji swept his gaze over the subordinates seated on both sides of the conference table. “Employees who exchange their physical health for company performance—such selfless dedication should be offered to the Red Cross. What are you doing here with me?”

Lin Yao covered her mouth, trying hard not to laugh.

“Two months ago, the Administration Department brought me your health check-up reports. For all employees who have worked here for over a year, comparisons were made against your reports from the same period last year. Congratulations, all of you gained something.” Yan Luji’s voice was so cold it seemed to give off frost. “If it isn’t stomach problems, then it’s liver problems.”

“Is my R&D Department an organ-trafficking organisation? Am I paying you in monthly instalments to sell your livers, kidneys, and stomachs?” Yan Luji threw the file in his hand onto the table with a bang, frightening all the team leaders present so much that they trembled.

So when his poisonous tongue was not aimed at her, it actually sounded this funny. Lin Yao worked hard to keep her head lowered.

After Yan Luji had vented enough anger, he opened his laptop, clicked open a PowerPoint, and continued the meeting.

“When the health check-up reports were sent over, the hospital’s suggestion was that company employees should exercise more,” Yan Luji said. “So I developed this app: a running app. Its function is very simple. It records the number of kilometres you run and walk every day. I plan to take five thousand yuan from the department funds every month as a reward fund. In other words, the person who runs the most kilometres each month can receive an extra five-thousand-yuan bonus.”

Lin Yao’s head shot up. Just running could earn five thousand yuan? The benefits were that good?

“I originally thought this would be enough to—”

“…improve everyone’s physical condition. But now it seems that it isn’t quite enough, because many people don’t seem to understand the state of their own bodies very well.” Yan Luji looked toward Lin Yao and Doctor Liang, who were sitting at the back of the conference room, and said, “So I want to add some self-assessment health prompts into the app. I wonder if Doctor Lin and Doctor Liang can provide some support.”

“Huh?” Lin Yao was still immersed in the thought of the monthly running bonus and did not react for a moment.

Doctor Liang pondered for a while and said, “I can organise some ordinary health precautions, including some lifestyle habits. If colleagues look at them from time to time, it should help a little.”

“Thank you, Doctor Liang.” Yan Luji looked toward Lin Yao again.

“I have a health survey report on my side. Originally, I planned to post it in the TOS system,” Lin Yao introduced. “This health report consists of sixty questions. If all of them are answered, it will finally generate a simple health report, which will include some common sub-health conditions, such as insomnia, excessive fatigue, gastrointestinal discomfort, and so on.”

“That’s good. I’ll put it into the app and force them to fill it in once every day.” Yan Luji immediately had an idea.

“It doesn’t need to be that frequent. Once a week is enough.” Lin Yao broke out in a cold sweat.

“When can you give it to me?” Yan Luji had always worked in a swift and decisive style.

Fortunately, Lin Yao had already been organising it for quite a while, so she answered, “I’ll tidy it up a little more. It should be ready by tomorrow morning.”

Doctor Liang also replied, “Then I’ll try to organise mine by tomorrow morning too.”

“Thank you both.” Yan Luji looked at everyone else and announced, “After you go back, pass this message on to your team members. Everyone must download this app. If your weekly mileage is less than fifteen kilometres… dismissal.”

After Yan Luji finished speaking, he did not wait for the people below to react. He closed his laptop and pushed open the door to leave.

Fifteen kilometres. That was around two kilometres a day? Not bad, not bad. It was not that much. Lin Yao silently calculated it.

“Old Zhang, what are we supposed to do about fifteen kilometres a week?” the leader of Team Three complained. “My highest record is an average of one thousand steps a day.”

“Same here, same here.” The pair of brothers in hardship supported each other as they walked out of the conference room.

Lin Yao silently swept her gaze over the expressions of the others. Every single one of them had a bitter melon face. Lin Yao suddenly felt as if life had become fantastical. There were actually people in the world who were this much of a homebody?

“Your horizons have been broadened, haven’t they?” Doctor Liang looked like someone who had seen the world.

Lin Yao nodded.

“When I first came here, I was shocked too. After a while, you get used to it. The world of programmers is something we in the medical field don’t understand.”

“But it’s five thousand yuan.” Under a heavy reward, there would surely be brave men.

“Their salaries are high. They don’t care about this bit of money,” Doctor Liang said. “Last time, after they finished a project, each person received a bonus of one hundred thousand.”

“Their salaries are that high? Then Director Yan…” Lin Yao simply did not dare imagine it.

“He gets shares…” Doctor Liang sighed. “If it weren’t for the fact that every one of them looks so miserable, I’d want to change careers and become a programmer too.”

My… future boyfriend… Yan Luji was even richer than she had imagined.

Lin Yao resentfully sent Xiao Ming a WeChat message.

[Xiao Ming, let’s put aside the girl-pursuing-boy thing for now. There’s also a wealth gap between me and Yan Luji. Do you think I still have hope?]

[Are you after his money?]

[Am I that kind of person?]

[Then why do you care whether he has money or not?]

[That’s true. No, I also need to work hard to make money.]

Lin Yao clenched her fist. Pursuing someone was a very money-consuming matter. Not to mention pursuing someone rich. Mm, tomorrow she would add new products to her Taobao shop and work hard to save more money.
