Today was Friday. For once, Yue Mingyuan did not go out fooling around with his bad friends. As soon as he got off work, he obediently went home, simply because his mother had told him three days ago that his aunt’s family would be coming over for dinner today.
As soon as Yue Mingyuan entered, he saw his aunt and uncle. Obediently, he greeted them.
“Auntie, Uncle, you’re here.”
“Xiao Ming, you’re off work,” his aunt asked kindly.
“As soon as I heard Auntie was coming, I rushed straight home after work. What delicious food are we having today? Is there my favourite, Auntie’s best dish, sweet and sour pork ribs?” Yue Mingyuan asked shamelessly.
“There is, there is. I knew you liked eating them.” His aunt was coaxed into laughing heartily by her nephew.
“Your aunt is a guest, yet you still make her cook for you.” Mother Yue appeared at the kitchen doorway, holding a spatula.
“Mom, when Auntie comes to our house, can she really be called a guest? We’re family to begin with,” Yue Mingyuan said, very much disagreeing with his mother’s statement.
“Exactly, we’re family to begin with,” his aunt cheerfully agreed.
“You and that mouth of yours.” Mother Yue gave her son a “disdainful” glare, waved her spatula, and returned to the kitchen.
“Auntie will go make pork ribs for you.” She patted Xiao Ming on the shoulder, then went back to the kitchen to make sweet and sour pork ribs.
In the living room, Father Yue and his brother-in-law were playing Chinese chess. The two of them were chess friends, and every time they met, they had to have a match. However, Yue Mingyuan had never been interested in Chinese chess since he was young. His cousin Xiao Dong, on the other hand, was quite good at it.
“Uncle, Cousin hasn’t come yet?” Yue Mingyuan put down his bag and keys, sank comfortably into the sofa, and asked casually.
“Xiao Dong said he has to work overtime. He’ll arrive half an hour late,” his uncle answered without raising his head.
“Oh.” Yue Mingyuan responded without much interest, took out his phone, and directly started gaming with others.
About twenty minutes later, Xiao Dong, who had arrived late, finally appeared.
“Dongdong, you must be hungry. Auntie made your favourite tomato-braised beef brisket. Dinner will be ready in another twenty minutes,” Mother Yue hurriedly said when she saw Xiao Dong come in.
“As expected, Auntie still dotes on me the most,” Xiao Dong said sweetly.
“Hurry and sit down. It’ll be ready soon.” Mother Yue was coaxed into smiling broadly. This son really had been born into the wrong family.
“Thank you, Auntie.” Xiao Dong familiarly put his things down, greeted everyone, and sat down beside his younger cousin. Seeing that Student Xiao Ming was fully focused on his game, he did not disturb him. He took out his own phone and began scrolling through Moments.
During this period, Xiao Dong had been busy looking for a TCM doctor for the company, so he had not checked Moments for several days. After scrolling through, he actually found quite a few fresh updates, liking posts as he went.
“Damn, does this woman have no shame?” Xiao Dong could not help swearing when he saw the newly refreshed photo.
“Which woman has no shame?” Student Xiao Ming, who had just finished a round, heard his cousin, who was usually polite to everyone, actually curse a woman. Excited, he leaned over completely, straining his eyes to look at the phone.
“She’s even a great beauty…” In the photo, at the entrance of a pure white church, a beautiful woman wearing a straw hat smiled brightly at the camera. It was a very ordinary travel photo.
“What great beauty? You newly graduated brats only know how to look at appearances.”
“What? Were you dumped by her?” Student Xiao Ming asked with a mischievous grin.
“What nonsense are you saying?” Xiao Dong knocked his younger cousin on the head and scolded him.
“Then why are you so worked up? Aren’t you always telling me to be gentle towards beautiful women?”
“There are many kinds of beauty. External beauty is the shallowest, though of course it’s also the easiest to attract people. But when looking for a girlfriend, you can’t only look at appearance.”
“Looks like there’s a story here. Tell me,” Yue Mingyuan said nosily.
“Go sit somewhere else.” Xiao Dong was too lazy to gossip with his cousin about his friend’s private matters. He stopped browsing Moments, opened a recruitment app, and planned to see if there were any TCM doctors looking for jobs.
Xiao Dong had only flipped through two pages when Yue Mingyuan, sitting beside him, saw that his cousin was actually looking through TCM résumés. Connecting that with his cousin’s identity as HR director, Student Xiao Ming suddenly had a lightbulb moment.
“Cousin, your company is still hiring TCM doctors?”
“We are.”
“Isn’t your Tengfeng Group involved in IT, electronics, and finance? Are you planning to open a hospital soon?”
“What hospital? Although our group already covers many fields, we currently have no plans to enter the medical industry.” Xiao Dong looked through the résumés as he answered. “It’s our group that’s planning to add another TCM health-care physician.”
“A TCM health-care physician? What requirements do you have for the doctor?” Student Xiao Ming asked tentatively.
“What? Do you have someone to recommend?”
“Maybe.” Yue Mingyuan said, “Tell me the recruitment requirements and benefits first.”
Hearing this, Xiao Dong finally turned his head and glanced at his younger cousin. Thinking that he had not found a suitable candidate even after nearly a month, he decided to try anything and said, “The requirements are simple. They must come from a TCM professional background, have a licensed physician qualification certificate, and have more than three years of clinical experience.”
These requirements were not actually that high. The difficult part was that the person had to stay at the company full-time. When many TCM doctors heard that the job was merely sitting in an office and checking the pulses of a group of office workers who stayed up late, or giving them cupping therapy, they felt it would not improve their medical skills at all, so most of them refused to come. As for some of those who were willing to stay at the company, Xiao Dong did not think much of their medical skills.
“Three years? Can you loosen that a little?” Counting Lin Yao’s school internship, she had not even reached two and a half years in total.
“No. If their medical skills aren’t up to standard, they won’t pass the interview at all,” Xiao Dong said. “We even invited an old professor from the University of Chinese Medicine to help conduct the interviews.”
“Cousin, this friend of mine really has excellent medical skills. She came from the Sixth Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine,” Yue Mingyuan said, refusing to give up.
“Xiao Ming, your brother is hiring a TCM doctor, someone who treats illnesses and saves people, not a receptionist.” Xiao Dong gave his cousin a look and let him understand it himself.
“Cousin, listen to me.” Yue Mingyuan continued fighting for it. “Although this friend of mine has only graduated for a year and a half, her medical skills are amazing…”
“Hehe…” Xiao Dong did not believe him at all.
“Although she doesn’t have much experience on her résumé, this friend of mine comes from a family of traditional Chinese medicine practitioners. She grew up immersed in it. At three years old, she could distinguish medicinal herbs. At seven, she could take pulses. When she was in junior high, she already started following her grandfather during outpatient consultations. If you calculate it like that, she has at least ten years of clinical experience.”
“That impressive? Then my little temple wouldn’t be able to keep someone like her.” Xiao Dong still did not believe it.
“Why won’t you believe me?” As soon as Yue Mingyuan heard his cousin’s tone, he knew the other party did not believe his words at all.
He grew a little anxious. “Cousin, do you still remember how my face was cured?”
“Didn’t you say you met some miracle doctor at the University of Chinese Medicine?” Xiao Dong had heard about this before.
“The TCM doctor I’m introducing to you is the one who cured my face,” Yue Mingyuan said. “You know what my face was like back then. So many big hospitals couldn’t cure it, but after a few doses of my friend’s medicine, it was mostly healed.”
Only then did Xiao Dong become somewhat interested. “Is she really as impressive as you say?”
“Not exaggerating at all.” Yue Mingyuan patted his chest in guarantee.
“Fine. Tell her to come for an interview on Monday.”
“How much is the salary?” Yue Mingyuan asked in a low voice. “Give her the highest rate.”
Usually, when a company recruited someone, there would be a salary range. After the interview, HR would give the final salary based on the applicant’s performance and their own requirements.
“You brat…” Xiao Dong laughed and scolded him. “The salary range for this post is ten thousand to fifteen thousand. If your friend passes the interview, she’ll get twelve thousand during the probation period, fifteen thousand after becoming permanent, plus bonuses.”
“I’m going to call her right now.” Yue Mingyuan took his phone and impatiently went back to his room to call Lin Yao.
“Dinner’s ready. Xiao Ming, come help carry the dishes,” Mother Yue called from the dining room.
“Auntie, I’ll do it. Xiao Ming went to make a call.” Xiao Dong stood up and walked over.
In the small park, Lin Yao had just finished exercising. She sat on a bench by the path, observing the people jogging past, trying to find the figure from a week ago.
Ring ring ring!
“Hello?” Lin Yao answered the phone.
“Why do you sound so listless? Where are you?” Yue Mingyuan asked.
“In the park,” Lin Yao replied.
“Still looking for that male god of yours? I’m telling you, aren’t you stupid? You only brushed past him once and already decided he was your male god. Maybe your eyes were playing tricks on you.”
Yue Mingyuan had heard Lin Yao mention how she had met her male god while running in the park, and he had always scoffed at it.
“How could my 2.0 vision be mistaken?” Lin Yao argued.
“Then you’ve been staking out the place for a week. Have you seen him?”
“Not seeing him doesn’t mean he doesn’t exist.”
“I say… you haven’t really fallen in love at first sight with that so-called male god, have you?” Yue Mingyuan asked. “What are you planning to do after finding him? Chase him?”
“That… I haven’t thought about it yet.” Lin Yao thought for a moment. If she really could meet him again, and if he was single, then actually, he could be added to the list of possibilities. Thinking of this, Lin Yao could not help laughing out loud.
“What are you giggling about?”
“Aiya, what did you call me for?”
“Oh, I almost forgot.” Yue Mingyuan said excitedly, “Medicine Bag, this Xiao Ming-gege has found you a good job.”
“A job?”
“That’s right. I’ve even negotiated the salary for you. Twelve thousand during probation, fifteen thousand after becoming permanent, plus bonuses.”
“The benefits are that good? Is it opened by one of your relatives?”
“More or less,” Yue Mingyuan explained. “I have a cousin who’s the HR director at Tengfeng Group. You know Tengfeng Group, right?”
“I know, I know.” I even have a customer from Tengfeng Group.
“Their company needs an in-house TCM doctor, basically to treat some minor problems for their employees, like insomnia, internal heat, that sort of thing,” Yue Mingyuan asked. “Interested?”
“It sounds pretty good. The work is easy, the benefits are good, but there isn’t much future development.”
“You’ve actually considered something as lofty as your future?” Yue Mingyuan asked incredulously.
“Nonsense. Who doesn’t think about their own future? I just haven’t started thinking about it yet,” Lin Yao said.
“I knew it.” Yue Mingyuan rolled his eyes and said, “Anyway, go to the interview first. When you finally figure out what future you want, you can resign then. If you keep staying at home like this, by New Year your weight will probably break one hundred and fifty jin.”
“Don’t curse me,” Lin Yao said.
“I won’t talk to you anymore. My mom’s calling me to eat. I’ll send the interview time and location to you on WeChat later. Remember to go!” Yue Mingyuan hurriedly hung up the phone.
Lin Yao looked down at her little belly, which had only gotten the tiniest bit fatter, then considered that summer would be over in another two months and she would soon lose her Taobao income.
She decided to accept the interview.
A job with high pay, little work, and close to home was not something that came along every day.
Not to mention, she was even getting in through connections…
