ATNMDT Chapter 19

Somewhat messy footsteps sounded in the courtyard. Mr. Dragon endured the bone-carving pain and forced himself to remain conscious.

He wanted to see how Mu Wanwan would despise him. That way, he would have a reason to attribute all the kindness she had shown him these past few days to ulterior motives. That way, he could completely cut away the faint shadow this bride-for-good-luck had carved onto his heart these past few days, without any lingering pain.

Instead of ridiculously remembering her kindness day after day during the days she despised him, like a resentful dragon shut away in the inner chambers, secretly sending out his divine consciousness every day to beg.

Mr. Dragon struggled to draw out a wisp of divine consciousness and sent it out of the room, attaching it to the corner of Mu Wanwan’s clothes. In the end, he was still weak. He was unwilling to see the disgusted gaze she would show later.

Mu Wanwan could not sense the existence of divine consciousness. Seeing that the room door was properly shut and that there were no messy footprints on the courtyard ground, she first let out a breath of relief. But in the next second, she noticed that the unpleasant smell in the air had become even more obvious.

Worried about Mr. Dragon, she pulled the door open with a **hua-la**. In an instant, a thick rotten stench rushed toward her face. She couldn’t help taking two steps back.

What was going on?

Why did the room smell this bad?

She remembered that when she had left in the morning, everything had still been fine.

But she had only taken two steps back, and Mr. Dragon’s delicate, fragile heart was already about to collapse.

Yes.

He actually had no right to demand how deeply this bride-for-good-luck should care for him. After all, their relationship was only in name. Not to mention that he had been unable to give her anything; instead, he had troubled her to take care of him for so long.

Even if she despised him now, he had no reason to hate her.

Mr. Dragon pressed his lips together tightly and slowly withdrew his divine consciousness.

Suddenly, he did not want to look anymore.

He did not want to see the way she hated him.

In the end, she did not know he was awake at all. All of this was only his own wishful thinking.

Mu Wanwan had no idea that merely taking two steps back because she had been overwhelmed by the smell had caused Mr. Dragon’s progress bar to leap forward by a large chunk. After recovering, she followed the sunlight streaming in through the door and immediately saw the room, which had become much brighter. She also saw Mr. Dragon lying properly on the bed at a glance.

The quilt and everything on him had not been moved. No one should have come in.

Thank goodness. Mr. Dragon had not been bullied.

Thinking this, Mu Wanwan endured the foul smell in the air and quickly walked to the bedside.

On the jade bed, her own quilt was folded neatly and placed to one side. But the quilt belonging to Mr. Dragon looked as though it had been soaked by something, showing a dark colour that did not match the bright red fabric.

The smell of rotting flesh at the tip of her nose became even stronger. Looking at Mr. Dragon’s pale, strange face and tightly pressed lips, an idea gradually surfaced in her mind. Without hesitation, Mu Wanwan reached out and lifted the bright red wedding quilt covering Mr. Dragon.

Her movements were actually very gentle, but they made a certain dragon feel cold all over, as if he were standing at the edge of a cliff.

Soon.

Once she lifted the quilt and saw his rotting tail again, the heaven-like days he had enjoyed from birth until now would come to an end.

But he still could not help feeling a trace of expectation.

If she did not despise him.

If she did not…

No.

Impossible.

No one would truly treat him well. Hadn’t he spent the past hundred years alone like this? The only “good brother” he had given a little sincerity to had stabbed him fiercely in the back…

Don’t lift it.

Don’t look…

Please…

Mr. Dragon’s fingertips trembled uncontrollably. The moment his skin touched the air, his blood seemed to flow backward.

And in the instant the quilt was lifted, Mu Wanwan also clearly saw Mr. Dragon’s miserable state.

His long dragon tail had split open from the place where she had applied medicine last time. Some of the scales had changed from withered yellow to an almost dense black colour and fallen off to the side. Pus, blood, and rotten fluid flowing from the wound had nearly soaked the entire quilt.

Looking at his rotten tail, which was almost as severe as when she had first seen him, Mu Wanwan felt a wave of dizziness. Her mood instantly became extremely complicated.

It was not that she blamed him for dirtying the quilt and bedding. She simply gained a deeper understanding of how serious Mr. Dragon’s injuries were, and at the same time, she felt unbearably heartbroken.

Why had he become like this after she had only gone out for less than half a day?

Clearly, when she changed his dressing yesterday, Mr. Dragon’s tail had already improved quite a lot…

Looking at the mattress and quilt stained red with blood, Mu Wanwan suddenly felt utterly powerless. Standing by Mr. Dragon’s bed, for the first time, her eyes embarrassingly reddened.

Before transmigrating, she had only been an ordinary office worker. She had no medical knowledge, no astonishing beauty, and even in that vast, lonely world, she had always been alone, with no one to rely on.

But after transmigrating into the book, although life was difficult and there were many dangers, Mr. Dragon’s existence made her feel that she was also someone who could be relied upon. It made her feel that she too could become extremely resilient and strong for someone else.

Although it had only been a few short days, her feelings toward Mr. Dragon had shifted. At first, she had simply wanted to survive after he woke up. But now, there was also a trace of sympathy born from mutual dependence.

Yet now, she had failed to take good care of him.

Mu Wanwan felt as if she could hardly breathe. Even the world before her eyes became somewhat blurry. Embarrassed, she reached out and wiped away the tears that had somehow fallen. She stood there almost helplessly.

She had to quickly think of a way.

She had to quickly think of a way.

Should she apply medicine like last time? Or had what she did last time actually been wrong?

Countless thoughts crowded into Mu Wanwan’s head, making her unable to react at all.

The room gradually quietened down. Mr. Dragon’s heart beat faster and faster, but he did not hear her hateful curses, nor did he hear her collapsing screams. He did not even hear the sound of her footsteps moving away in escape.

What exactly was her reaction?

Could she have been frightened unconscious by him?

Mr. Dragon still could not hold back. He secretly released a thread of divine consciousness. But that wisp seemed to lose its way the instant it clearly saw Mu Wanwan’s expression, freezing foolishly in place.

She was crying.

She was actually crying.

How could she be crying?

Was she crying for him?

She was not annoyed, and she did not despise him.

For a moment, Mr. Dragon could not describe what he felt.

This was different from what he had expected.

This was different from what he had imagined.

His ears flushed shamelessly red. Mr. Dragon’s eyelashes trembled, and he actually felt that his tail, which had rotted again because of the curse, did not hurt quite as much anymore.

After the plot inside Mr. Dragon’s mind had progressed almost a hundred chapters, Wanwan finally calmed down. Right now, she regretted more than ever that she had not carefully memorised every single word of that novel.

If she had read it carefully, perhaps she could have found a way to treat Mr. Dragon’s tail. The book had said that Mr. Dragon had been seriously injured because he fought with the leaders of other races, but she did not know the exact cause. Nor could she take Mr. Dragon out to see a doctor. All she could do was get him some food and occasionally feed him some spirit stones…

Wait.

Spirit stones.

A thought flashed through her mind like lightning. Mu Wanwan hurriedly piled all the spirit stones in her pocket beside Mr. Dragon’s ear, feeling even more guilty at the same time.

How could she have forgotten?

Mr. Dragon was a cultivation dragon. His injuries could not be healed by simply applying ointment. Most likely, he needed a large amount of spiritual energy to replenish him.

And judging from Mr. Dragon’s current long-term unconscious, vegetative-dragon state, his meridians were most likely severely damaged too. He definitely could not directly absorb the thin spiritual energy between heaven and earth. Without spirit stones beside him, he was practically like a dried-up land. Forget using spiritual power to repair his meridians; perhaps even staying alive was difficult.

Mu Wanwan wiped her tears clean with her sleeve. She did not mind the unpleasant smell in the room. She sat by the bed and stared at the spirit stones placed beside Mr. Dragon’s ear, hoping this method would work.

Perhaps prayers were useful, because under Mu Wanwan’s gaze, those spirit stones really did seem to gradually fade bit by bit, transforming into misty spiritual energy that entered Mr. Dragon’s body.

**Author’s note:**

Hahaha, today I suddenly thought of some fun idiom explanations. Little angels are welcome to add more—

Resentful Dragon in the Deep Chambers: Refers to Mr. Dragon, who, after being abandoned by Wanwan, lives lonely and miserable in the cold palace. It refers to a tragic lifestyle among dragons.

Shameless Dragon: Refers to the shameless behaviour of Mr. Dragon, whose first reaction after discovering that Wanwan was crying for him was actually joy and shyness. A derogatory term, commonly used among dragons to criticise a certain dragon for being very shameless.
