I Love You So Much
Of course, it was not truly hearing through his ears.
Rather, through a medium, in a unique tone, the words were directly fed back to him. It was faster than reading lips.
Fang Anyu widened his eyes.
After Jun Yueyue finished speaking, she kept smiling at him and even reached out to flick the leaves on top of his head. Fang Anyu deliberately encouraged Jun Yueyue to speak again. He took the phone and typed:
Does this kind of ability have no combat power? Does that mean I still can’t protect myself, or protect you?
After Jun Yueyue read it, she used voice input on the phone.
“You’re not the combat-type kind, but you’re very powerful. At special times, you can protect all of us.”
Fang Anyu’s eyelashes fluttered rapidly. Even his breathing became disordered.
He really heard it.
Although he knew that the voice appearing in his mind was definitely not the one Jun Yueyue spoke with, he truly did not need to look at the phone anymore. He could hear other people speaking.
Li Li asked from the side, “Then when will we mutate?”
Fang Anyu heard this sentence too.
His excitement was difficult to describe, but it only showed in the way his grip on Jun Yueyue’s hand tightened slightly. He did not rush to say anything. He only concentrated fully on listening to everyone’s conversation, and even to the sound of the vehicle moving.
Fang Anyu no longer remembered when he had begun to lose his hearing and speech. His mother had said that when he was little, he had once had an accident, but he did not remember any of it at all.
This was the first time in all these years that he had heard this world in such a special way.
He held tightly onto Jun Yueyue’s hand. Leaves sprouted one after another on his head, all hidden within his hair, helping him collect the sounds of the world and feed them back to him.
“The timing isn’t certain,” Jun Yueyue said, thinking of how in the previous life, her own mutation had been triggered by the betrayal of “family.” “Sometimes, it might need a stimulus to trigger it.”
Everyone discussed briefly, and the topic soon returned to Fang Anyu.
Li Li said, “You said his ability can not only soothe ability users when they’re advancing, but also grow things. That’s perfect. The plot of land at the resort that was originally meant for tourists can be handed over to him.”
Jun Yueyue had originally planned the same thing. She did not want Fang Anyu to participate in anything dangerous.
She agreed happily.
“Right. He’s always been good at taking care of flowers and plants. After the apocalypse, the weather will change drastically, and eating fruit and vegetables will become difficult. With Anyu’s ability, we’ll be able to eat fresh fruit and vegetables.”
Everyone casually talked a little more about guesses for triggering abilities.
The vehicle drove for another two hours. On the empty, deserted expressway, they pulled over to the roadside for a short rest and to eat.
They had collected enough supplies. When people felt panicked inside, filling their stomachs with food was something that could calm them. So everyone ate quite a lot.
Especially Fang Anyu.
Jun Yueyue knew that after mutation, the amount of food needed would multiply. While she slowly nibbled on a bag of bread herself, she kept opening all kinds of food for Fang Anyu.
Fang Anyu did not wolf the food down, but his speed was not slow either. The few leaves on his head were hidden in his hair, not sticking out. If one did not reach out and part his hair, they would be difficult to notice.
Jun Yueyue wanted to laugh whenever she looked at him. From time to time, she pinched his face, squeezed his ear, and so on. Usually, when she faced Fang Anyu, she would also talk to herself, but before, Fang Anyu could not hear her. Now, everything was being fed back to him by the little leaves on his head.
“Aiyo, look at this little thing…”
“Eating like a little pig…”
“So pretty…”
As Fang Anyu ate, the roots of his ears turned red. However, Jun Yueyue did not pay much attention. Her whole heart and eyes were fixed on Fang Anyu, watching him lower his head and eat, finding him incredibly precious.
After eating and resting briefly, everyone set out again. Their original intention was to drive straight to Pingchuan in one go. But halfway there, one tyre on the vehicle following behind them broke.
They did have a spare, but changing and installing it would still take quite a bit of time. Since it was already evening anyway, they simply stopped the vehicles by the roadside and ate again.
The sunset burned like fire, blazing across half the sky.
Jun Yueyue leaned against Fang Anyu’s shoulder and continued eating bread. Facing the sunset with Fang Anyu, she narrowed her eyes and basked in the light.
This was something she usually did not like much, but at this moment, it tasted quite good. After all, if she wanted to eat this kind of thing in the future, she could only rely on making it herself.
Moreover, being with Fang Anyu like this had completely calmed the panic Jun Yueyue had felt when the apocalypse first arrived.
They looked like they were fleeing disaster, but Jun Yueyue felt that they were practically on their honeymoon.
Only, this honeymoon was particularly thrilling and exciting, and would definitely be unforgettable for the rest of their lives.
When only the last bite of bread was left, Fang Anyu’s lips landed on Jun Yueyue’s forehead.
Jun Yueyue lifted her face to look at him. The sunset filling the sky reflected on him, making him look like a warm little sun. Jun Yueyue’s heart softened into a warm red cloud of cotton candy. With just a light lick, it would melt in Fang Anyu’s arms.
But this beautiful atmosphere was soon pierced apart by the sharp screech of brakes.
A car stopped beside them. It was a small sedan.
Everyone sitting by the roadside eating stood up warily. The car doors opened, and three people got out. When they saw Jun Yueyue’s group, both sides froze.
Jun Yueyue stared in shock at Wu Zhenfei, who was covered in blood and looked utterly dishevelled.
Just one day ago, when they had separated at the hotel entrance, he still looked like a proper human being. How had he become like this after just one day?
The person standing behind him was none other than the military officer surnamed Zhang from before. When he got out of the car, he was hopping on only one leg. His leg was wrapped in bandages, but blood had already soaked through them. The girl called Jiaojiao was struggling to support him, preventing him from falling.
The miserable state of the three of them stood in sharp contrast with the group still holding food and drink.
Before Jun Yueyue could speak, Wu Zhenfei suddenly ran toward her. He seemed to want to reach out and hug her, but because he was covered in blood, he stopped in front of Jun Yueyue. Tears fell with loud splats, and his voice was hoarse and choked.
“Yueyue… We ran into an attack by so many zombies gathered together. Those people… those people all died. Ming Zhen also…”
Jun Yueyue’s brows jumped.
In the early stage of the apocalypse, zombies should not be able to form a horde.
Could it be… could it be that only one day had passed, and a second-level zombie had already appeared?
“Hurry, we have to go! They’re behind us. They’ve been chasing our car. Some of them are especially fast…”
Wu Zhenfei had clearly been frightened badly, and his words were jumbled. But soon, there was no time for Jun Yueyue and the others to react too much. A sharp zombie howl tore through the warm illusion of the sunset.
They could only hear the sound. No shadows could yet be seen on the distant road.
But Jun Yueyue believed Wu Zhenfei. Looking at the miserable state of him and the only two survivors, she knew they absolutely could not treat this lightly.
Jun Yueyue immediately had Li Li order everyone to get into the vehicles.
Wu Zhenfei and the other two survivors were placed into the vehicle behind them, whose tyre had already been fixed.
Everyone quickly drove away. The large trucks raced across the flat road.
At first, they could still occasionally hear zombie howls.
Jun Yueyue did not doubt for a second that a zombie group could chase them for thousands of miles. Zombies had no sense of pain. Even if they ran until their legs broke, if there really was a second-level zombie commanding them, then even crawling, they would continue to crawl without stopping.
However, the large trucks were faster after all. Very quickly, they could no longer hear the zombies.
The trucks travelled along the road. No one knew who was driving the rear vehicle, but in the front, Fang Anyan was driving. He kept driving in silence, probably until he truly could not hold on anymore. Only then did he turn his head and wake Ji Fei, who had been catching up on sleep beside him.
“I feel a bit unwell. I can’t see the road clearly. You…”
Ji Fei was already good at light sleep anytime and anywhere, allowing her to stay alert while preserving energy.
By now, the sky had already darkened. The moment Fang Anyan spoke, she immediately opened her eyes and turned to look at him. There was not a trace of a girl’s sleepy confusion or coquettishness in her eyes. Her sharp gaze looked ready to rush out and stab a zombie back and forth at any moment.
Instead, Fang Anyan was startled by her. His fever-muddled brain cleared a little, and he said with a helpless laugh, “Did you sleep well?”
Ji Fei silently reached out to touch his forehead. Then she turned to meet Jun Yueyue’s gaze, who had also been woken up.
“He has a fever. Is he about to mutate?”
Jun Yueyue immediately became alert. “He should be.”
The vehicle pulled over.
Fang Anyan got out, preparing to switch seats with Ji Fei. Jun Yueyue also followed them down.
The moment she moved, Fang Anyu also woke up. Rubbing his eyes, he dazedly tugged her sleeve and followed her down.
“You…” Seeing him rubbing his eyes, Jun Yueyue took out her phone and used voice input. “Why did you get down? Do you need to pee?”
Fang Anyu nodded without looking.
Jun Yueyue was in a hurry to switch positions with Fang Anyan and did not notice that he had nodded without looking. She pointed to a tree by the roadside not far from the back of the truck. Fang Anyu obediently headed toward that tree.
Jun Yueyue smiled faintly and quickly walked to the front of the truck. She said to Ji Fei, who was supporting Fang Anyan, “You two get into the back. I checked just now. We’re not far. I’ll drive.”
Li Li also heard the movement. He put down Jun Yu and quietly got down, intending to take over the driver’s seat. But when his eyes met Jun Yueyue’s, Jun Yueyue said, “Have you checked? We’re close to Pingchuan now. It’s a mountain road.”
Li Li immediately swallowed.
That time he had gone street racing, he had flipped off a mountain road. But just as he was preparing to force himself to do it anyway, Fang Anyu came back from peeing and voluntarily sat in the passenger seat, waiting obediently inside for Jun Yueyue.
In the end, Jun Yueyue drove.
Fortunately, she had also handled this kind of vehicle in the previous life. After familiarising herself with it for a short while, she got the hang of it.
But after driving for a while, Fang Anyu took out his phone and suddenly typed out a paragraph for her to see.
Jun Yueyue glanced sideways at it, and her heart gave a violent jump.
On the phone screen was written:
There’s something in the woods. I saw it just now.
Fang Anyu had only just put down the phone when a dark shadow suddenly shot out from the side and lunged straight at the windshield.
It was practically face-to-face with Jun Yueyue through the windshield.
It was a monkey with scarlet eyes!
At the same time, countless monkeys leapt out from the trees, jumping toward the two moving trucks.
Everyone inside the vehicle sat upright. Only Fang Anyan had already fainted completely, lying on Ji Fei’s lap with his brows tightly furrowed.
Before the apocalypse arrived, domestic animals had died in large numbers. But wild animals were exactly the opposite.
This area was a protected forest. There were indeed groups of monkeys living inside. But normally, even the naughtiest ones would at most jump onto the road and ask passing vehicles for food. They would not go too far. Netizens often took pictures of them and posted them online, praising them as obedient and cute, unlike the monkeys on the streets of certain countries visited during travel, who only stole, robbed, and even scratched people.
But when these cute little things changed from normal monkeys into zombie monkeys, the word cute had nothing whatsoever to do with them anymore.
Thud, thud, thud.
Monkeys kept jumping onto the trucks. Jun Yueyue was forced to stop because the windshield in front of her was gradually being covered by monkeys. The rear truck had stopped even earlier, not far away.
The monkeys followed the scent and smelled the living humans beneath the tarp. They began frantically tearing at the tarp. Some smashed against the windshield and doors.
Sharp howls rang out one after another.
Soon, gunshots sounded from behind. Then the screaming grew even louder. Someone even jumped out of the truck bed and ran toward the road, only to be quickly pounced on by the monkeys.
The people inside the truck exchanged glances.
The people behind them were their future base companions. They could not ignore them. Besides, three or four monkeys were taking turns smashing their heads against the windshield. It was only a matter of time before it shattered.
The large truck was loaded with cargo. It could not swing around wildly like a small car and shake off these insane monkeys. They had to slaughter them all before they could continue onward.
But these creatures were even more troublesome than zombies. They were far more agile.
Everyone quickly armed themselves, making sure their clothing covered as much skin as possible to prevent scratches and mutation.
Another gunshot came from the rear, followed by another heart-rending scream.
Fang Anyan was unconscious, so the only remaining combat power was Li Li, Ji Fei, and Jun Yueyue.
The three quickly armed themselves.
Jun Yueyue told Fang Anyu to stay properly inside the truck. Then she jumped down with Ji Fei and Li Li.
Ji Fei and Li Li went to support the rear truck carrying people. Jun Yueyue turned and grabbed the hind leg of a monkey clinging to the window, still smashing against the glass. She directly yanked it to the ground and stabbed a knife into its skull.
The other two monkeys smelled Jun Yueyue and gave up smashing the glass, pouncing toward her instead.
Jun Yueyue was wrapped up from head to toe, only her eyes exposed. She did not panic at all. Raising her hand, she stabbed the dagger directly into the wide-open mouth of one monkey lunging at her.
But there were two monkeys.
Jun Yueyue raised her other hand, guarding against the second monkey. But for some reason, before that monkey reached her, it suddenly froze, as if in a daze.
After she stabbed the first monkey to death and threw it onto the ground, the other monkey’s scarlet eyes were still staring somewhere not far away, squatting motionless on the hood of the truck.
Jun Yueyue did not miss this opportunity. She stepped onto the car’s bumper, flipped herself up nimbly, and solved the dazed monkey with one slash.
Inside the truck, Fang Anyan was rolling on the seat, seemingly in pain. Jun Yu looked outside in terror, gripping the clothing at Fang Anyan’s shoulder to prevent him from rolling off the seat and into the footwell.
Fang Anyu had his back to them, his eyes closed, sensing the number of zombie monkeys around them and trying to control them.
Fang Anyu’s face was pale. Sweat slid down his temples along the side of his face.
The monkeys’ movements slowed slightly. This bought Jun Yueyue and the others a very brief window of time. But this brief window was already enough for them to counterattack frantically.
Most of the people in the rear compartment were still curled up inside. But some had already rushed out with weapons, both men and women among them. They stood beside the torn tarp, waving their weapons and fighting the monkeys to protect the people inside.
But two people lay on the ground behind the truck, their faces torn beyond recognition by the monkeys. Yet Ji Fei was sharp-eyed enough to notice, under the rear lights, that these two had not died from monkey bites.
They had died from bullets.
People from the truck continued jumping down one after another. They formed a battle formation with Jun Yueyue’s group, back to back, all facing outward together. Like chopping melons and vegetables, they quickly eliminated more than half the monkeys whose movements had slowed.
But very soon, they discovered that, for some unknown reason, the monkeys’ movements suddenly sped up again.
Someone standing on the truck was scratched by a monkey. Then another gunshot sounded. The person who had still been fighting to protect those behind him was shot in the back and fell from the truck.
The eyes of everyone fighting turned almost as blood-red as the monkeys’ as they looked over.
The people who had originally been standing at the edge of the tarp, risking their lives against the monkeys, froze for a moment. Then they all screamed, threw down their weapons, and shrank back beneath the tarp.
Fuck.
If being injured meant they would be shot dead by their own companions whether or not they mutated, why should they risk their lives fighting?!
Jun Yueyue had already guessed who was playing tricks inside, but right now, they were overwhelmed and truly had no time to settle accounts with him.
With no one guarding the gap in the tarp, monkeys quickly crawled inside. Chaotic gunshots rang out. The screams inside became almost inhuman. The cries of women and children connected into one continuous sound.
Jun Yueyue was so angry she almost vomited blood. But her hands did not stop. She continued fighting the monkeys.
Everyone fought until their arms went numb.
A normal person fighting back-to-back with them was scratched by a monkey. He let out a despairing roar, then left their rear. He began wildly and recklessly chasing the monkeys with an axe, hacking at them.
Screams and howls intertwined. Blood and the red rear lights merged together. In the pitch-black night sky, thin flashes of lightning occasionally slid past. This corner of the world looked like the meeting point between earth and hell.
Fortunately, very soon, for some unknown reason, these monkeys’ movements suddenly slowed again. They raised their heads and began looking toward the fine lightning in the night sky.
After Jun Yueyue and the others froze for a moment, they began counter-killing frantically.
The screams from the truck gradually stopped too. The gunshots ceased.
Hearing the sounds of slaughter outside gradually decrease, the people inside the truck began jumping down from the compartment.
Monkey corpses littered the ground. Blood almost flowed like a river on the road. The people who had been fighting outside all had sore arms, and their whole bodies were practically soaked in blood.
Everyone from the truck got down.
The monkeys had nearly all been killed. The remaining ones howled and fled.
They should not have fled.
After turning into zombie monkeys, their group consciousness could be explained as something carved into their genes, because they had always behaved this way while alive.
Just like humans, even after becoming zombies, still knew to walk on two legs instead of crawling on the ground.
But fleeing was different.
Fleeing required subjective awareness. They had to feel fear before they could run.
How could monkeys that had turned into zombies know fear?!
But right now, there was no time to think about that.
Jun Yueyue felt as if her entire chest was burning.
After being injured by zombie monkeys, they were destined to mutate. But they should not die at the hands of their own companions.
Everyone got down from the truck, still terrified, gathering together. The tiny bit of trust that had only just formed among them had already vanished. In their eyes, there was only vigilance and fear toward one another.
The last person to get down from the truck was the officer surnamed Zhang, holding a gun and supported by the girl.
Just as Ji Fei was about to move, Jun Yueyue walked straight over.
Wu Zhenfei was jumping down from the truck when the man’s scream suddenly rang out, startling him so badly that he fell directly to the ground.
Because the man had no guard against Jun Yueyue. He had never taken a little girl like Jun Yueyue seriously at all. Knowing that she and Wu Zhenfei knew each other, he thought she had come over to help Wu Zhenfei.
But unexpectedly, Jun Yueyue attacked him directly.
Fast and ruthless.
Using the knife that had just pried open countless monkey skulls, she sliced half of his wrist off.
The gun fell to the ground. He clutched his hand as blood poured out. His eyes nearly split open as he looked at Jun Yueyue.
The girl called Jiaojiao beside him was so frightened she fell straight to the ground.
Jun Yueyue, with strength from who knew where, grabbed the man’s hair and nearly dragged him across the ground, pulling him in front of the huddled crowd.
This kind of strength had already surpassed that of an ordinary person. Dragging a grown man along the ground so easily was something Jun Yueyue had only been able to do after mutating in the previous life.
But right now, her mind was filled with fury. She had no way to connect all the illogical events of tonight.
She threw the man onto the ground, pointed her knife at him, then pointed at the three human corpses lying not far away and asked, “You killed those people, didn’t you? There are more in the truck, aren’t there?!”
This man had clearly never been treated like this before. The veins at his temples bulged. Clutching his hand, he roared, “Are you fucking insane?! They were all scratched or bitten! These monkeys are already like zombies. Even if I didn’t kill them, they would have turned into zombies!”
“That’s right.” Jun Yueyue nodded. “But the mutation time after being bitten or scratched by zombies is within two hours. Whether being scratched by monkeys will turn someone into a zombie, no one knows! They were still fighting for their companions, but you shot them from behind!”
“You deserve to die!”
After Jun Yueyue said this, she did not leave the man even a chance to argue. She directly slashed his throat.
Blood sprayed far away. He twitched on the ground.
Jun Yueyue looked at everyone. Her knife was still dripping blood, but her tone was as gentle as it had been these past few days.
“I will not allow a rotten apple like this to appear in our team. If someone is bitten by a zombie, they will indeed mutate. But at the beginning of mutation, there is a process. Blood vessels protrude under the skin, the eyes turn grey-white, limbs twitch, and so on. There will be signs. At that time, any of you can kill that person for the sake of everyone’s lives, and for your own.”
Jun Yueyue continued, “But something like what happened just now must never happen again. Otherwise, you’ll end up like him.”
Everyone was silent. They looked at Jun Yueyue with different expressions.
Jun Yueyue’s hand was trembling badly.
She turned to look at Jiaojiao, who had been mixed up with that officer. Jiaojiao climbed up from the ground. Behind her was only Wu Zhenfei. She hid behind him.
“Save me, save me…”
The man on the ground had not died completely yet and was still twitching.
Jun Yueyue walked over with the knife. Jiaojiao was so frightened she lost control of her bladder.
Wu Zhenfei trembled and called, “Yueyue.”
Jun Yueyue only glanced at him, then pointed her knife at Jiaojiao and asked, “When he killed people just now, did you participate?”
“No, no…” Jiaojiao cried until her voice no longer sounded human. “I didn’t!”
Jun Yueyue asked Wu Zhenfei again, “You encountered a zombie horde. Even Ming Zhen died.”
Jun Yueyue pointed at Jiaojiao. “How did she survive? Did she pull someone else over to shield herself?!”
Wu Zhenfei had never seen Jun Yue like this: aggressive, terrifying, like a death-demanding Asura.
His lips trembled, and he quickly shook his head. “No… Yueyue, don’t be like this. She survived only because… because my uncle…”
He seemed unable to say it.
Jun Yueyue guessed it.
How could a little girl like this survive a zombie horde?
What else could she have relied on except that man surnamed Zhang protecting her?
Jun Yueyue especially wanted to kill her with one slash and make her a pair with the man not yet fully dead on the ground.
Fire burned in her heart. She was also still holding a grudge over the fact that Jiaojiao had pushed Fang Anyu earlier.
Jun Yueyue knew that her current state was a little wrong. This kind of mania, bloodlust, and urge to chop apart and smash everything she found displeasing was something she had only experienced in the previous life when her ability advanced.
But although Jiaojiao was disgusting, she was not suitable to kill right now. Everyone had just been terrified by the sudden attack from the zombie monkeys. She could kill the bastard who had shot people in the back, but she could not kill this seemingly soft and delicate girl. Otherwise, she would leave everyone with the impression of being a murderous maniac.
Jun Yueyue was trembling all over. She pulled off the things covering her face and head. When she moved, the knife in her hand moved too. Wu Zhenfei instinctively backed up. Because his leg was being held, he also fell onto the ground.
No one stepped forward.
No one came close to Jun Yueyue, and no one stopped her.
Some people did not dare.
Some people wished Jun Yueyue would kill Jiaojiao too.
But just as Jun Yueyue was about to turn and go to the roadside to calm down, someone suddenly hugged her from behind.
At this moment, the smell of blood in the air covered all other scents. But Jun Yueyue still smelled it.
The person hugging her gave off a fresh scent like trees and green grass. It was the scent that had always been on Fang Anyu since his mutation.
Jun Yueyue’s hand trembled, and the knife fell to the ground.
Fang Anyu held her and dragged her toward the roadside.
Jun Yueyue did not dare turn back to look at him. That abnormal state in her had completely disappeared, replaced by frantic anxiety and fear.
When had Fang Anyu gotten out of the vehicle?!
Why was he so disobedient…
Had he seen her kill someone?
This was different from killing zombies. Just now, Jun Yueyue had killed a person.
She did not want Fang Anyu to see her killing people. She was afraid Fang Anyu would be scared of her.
Fang Anyu held her by the roadside, hugging her tightly from behind. His breath lingered by the side of her neck, warm and gentle. He did not mind the blood all over her. He was clearly comforting her.
Then everyone began sorting out the corpses, taking out all the things in the truck that had been contaminated by zombie blood. The injured were treated. A few people scratched by monkeys, because Jun Yueyue had killed that man earlier, dared to voluntarily come forward and say so. They voluntarily isolated themselves nearby, with specific people watching them.
This was not a suitable place to stay for long. But after such an intense battle, they truly needed to rest a little.
When the battle ended, Ji Fei immediately returned to the vehicle to check on Fang Anyan. Li Li said a few words to Jun Yu, then began directing everyone to organise the truck compartment.
Jun Yueyue’s emotions gradually calmed under Fang Anyu’s comfort.
Only then did she finally dare turn to look at him.
The vehicle lights were on, so they could see things around them, but the light was not especially bright. Jun Yueyue looked at Fang Anyu with some avoidance. Only when she saw the familiar gentleness in his eyes did she slowly relax and lift her face to meet his gaze.
There was still blood on her face. Fang Anyu reached out and wiped it away for her, then lowered his head and kissed her forehead.
For some reason, Jun Yueyue felt like crying.
Fang Anyu really was too good…
He must have seen her kill someone just now. Otherwise, he would not be comforting her like this.
She could not help crying pitifully as she said, “You’re so good…”
The leaves in Fang Anyu’s hair trembled.
He heard it. But he pretended not to hear, looking at Jun Yueyue with a face full of confusion.
Jun Yueyue’s tears fell. Pouting, she muttered quietly, “I love you so much…”
Fang Anyu’s heart began pounding.
Being able to hear the person he loved confessing to him was truly indescribable for him.
Although the voice that reached his mind was not Jun Yueyue’s, Fang Anyu could even hear her tone. It must have been soft and nasal, carrying a hint of coquettishness toward him.
The person he liked was confessing to him.
No matter when or where, this was something that made one’s heart race.
Fang Anyu held Jun Yueyue’s head and lowered his head, gently kissing her lips. Tenderly, lingeringly, giving her the most genuine response.
Jun Yueyue’s eyes were open.
When Fang Anyu’s lips pressed down, her eyes blinked. She felt as if something was not quite right.
But very quickly, she could no longer think of what was wrong. Fang Anyu held her so tightly she could barely breathe, and the tip of his tongue seemed to dance across hers. She could only focus entirely on receiving him, not letting him step wrong.
Midway, however, Fang Anyu seemed to sense something and suddenly opened his eyes.
His movements did not stop. Jun Yueyue was still lost in the kiss, eyes closed. But Fang Anyu’s eyes looked toward the depths of the forest.
There, among the shadows, three or four monkeys had gathered together, trying again to attack people.
In that instant, Fang Anyu’s eyes gradually turned a faint grey. His gaze shot like an arrow through the cold black night, straight toward those eager monkeys.
Very quickly, the monkeys whimpered and ran away, as if they had seen the most terrifying thing in the world, disappearing swiftly into the depths of the forest.
When the kiss ended, Jun Yueyue was covered in dried blood and looked utterly dishevelled. But she narrowed her eyes, feeling as if all her emotions had been soothed.
Fang Anyu’s embrace was so warm that she could not bear to leave.
However, no matter how sticky the two were, there had to be an end. Soon, Li Li stood not far from them, cleared his throat, and said, “That’s about enough. The things have been organised and the people have been sorted out. Two people scratched by monkeys have been tied up and placed in the corner of the truck where they can’t hurt anyone.”
Li Li said, “This place isn’t suitable to stay in for long. Who knows what else might jump out in a bit? Let’s hurry and go.”
Jun Yueyue responded. She pulled Fang Anyu and was about to explain, but Fang Anyu took the initiative to hold her hand first and walked toward the vehicle.
That strange feeling appeared again in Jun Yueyue.
But exactly what was wrong…
For the moment, she could not figure it out. Very soon, she got into the vehicle. She was responsible for driving and could not split her attention, so she could only focus on driving for now and temporarily stop thinking about what was wrong.
After the vehicle travelled for a while, they began climbing the winding mountain road.
Jun Yueyue focused intently on the road ahead. Fang Anyu sat beside her. He did not close his eyes to rest like the others. Like Jun Yueyue, he kept his eyes fixed on the road ahead.
Jun Yueyue knew Fang Anyu was keeping her company.
But it was already night now, and Jun Yueyue wanted him to rest even more. He must have been frightened just now…
She always felt that Fang Anyu’s personality and appearance made people want to place him inside a greenhouse, letting him grow without worries.
But many times, her irritability, her negative emotions, even her fear, were all soothed by Fang Anyu. Jun Yueyue found it magical. He seemed so gentle, so gentle that even if he were hit, he would not know how to hit back. Yet he also seemed stronger than everyone. No matter what situation he was in, he accepted it calmly. Without deliberately trying to show anything, he could give people the most reassuring strength.
Even sitting beside her like this made Jun Yueyue feel warm, like she was sitting beside an electric heater.
The vehicle slowly moved along the mountain road. Soon, in the darkness of night, that winding road was left behind them.
They entered Pingchuan City.
There was less than half an hour left until the entrance to the resort’s suspension bridge.
Jun Yueyue woke Li Li and told him to contact his friend Fatty.
Li Li groggily dialled the phone, turned on speaker, and arranged with them to prepare to receive the vehicles and the people.
Fatty agreed quickly from the other end.
“We’ve been ready for ages. We’re at the suspension bridge entrance.”
Li Li hung up and pulled Jun Yu closer into his arms.
Ji Fei was woken by the sound. She touched Fang Anyan’s forehead, then took out the liquid fever medicine she had kept in her pocket, unscrewed it, and gave him a little more to drink.
After entering Pingchuan City, the sound of the vehicles moving attracted wandering zombies. But their vehicles were relatively large and high.
For the time being, the zombies could only hang onto the trucks or howl. Since they had not yet evolved to second-level, no zombie could command its companions to climb upward.
So after staying alert for a while, they relaxed slightly. The people at the rear only had to occasionally use blunt weapons to knock off the zombies’ hands.
Very soon, they passed through the city centre and arrived at the resort entrance.
But just as everyone was about to breathe a sigh of relief, Jun Yueyue turned the truck, preparing to go onto the suspension bridge, then suddenly slammed on the brakes.
The headlights shone toward the stone platform leading onto the bridge.
Where the bridge should have been laid down, there were now only parallel steel bars.
There were no bridge planks at all.
