“Boom!” A loud noise erupted, causing enormous waves to surge.
“Roar~!” The dying mutant sea creature let out a mournful cry, filled with anger and unwillingness.
Bai Qingqing stood on top of a mutant plant, furrowing her brows as she looked at the vast sea. Various mutant sea creatures existed in the expansive ocean, and some of them even had the ability to survive in water, despite being zombies.
During this period, she had been relentlessly levelling up, hunting crystal nuclei to upgrade her light-based abilities to the sixth rank. With a single wave of her hand, she could pierce through a group of zombies, inflicting devastating damage.
The howls of mutant plants and animals echoed around her. They cheered as they gazed at the calm sea, and the body of a sea creature slowly emerged, washed ashore by the waves.
They eagerly pounced on it and happily began to feast.
Sitting in her wicker chair, Bai Qingqing watched as these little creatures enjoyed their meal, a faint smile appearing on her face.
With her Spatial Ability at the sixth rank, Plant Control at the seventh rank, and Light-based abilities at the sixth rank, she should be able to traverse the apocalypse with ease.
Time seemed to pass slowly yet quickly. In the blink of an eye, it had been a year since she had separated from those people. She wondered how they were doing now.
Although she lived in this remote forested coastal area, she was aware that the post-apocalyptic environment was more hostile and treacherous than before. The number of zombies was increasing, likely due to the frequent zombie waves.
The Southwest Base and the Central State Base, which were closest to her, had been destroyed. It was estimated that only a few humans managed to survive without being bitten by zombies.
She vaguely learned that the newly appointed Zombie Emperor had established a territory for the zombies, intending to turn this world into a kingdom of zombies.
Zhong Xi died, but Bai Tiantian was still alive. She couldn’t help but marvel at the charm of the female lead. The newly appointed Zombie Emperor had become a loyal follower under her control.
Zombies and humans couldn’t be together. What would happen to Bai Tiantian in the future? Would she still help the Zombie Emperor kill all the members of the Thunder Team, just like in the original story?
The cries of mutant plants and animals interrupted her thoughts. The well-fed little creatures gathered around her, acting like cute and playful pets, rolling around and rubbing against her.
Bai Qingqing glanced at them and initiated her psychic control. She said, “Let’s go home.”
Her plant-like mount began to move, leading the way into the deep forest, with the group of mutant plants and animals following closely behind like a small army.
As they approached her territory, a mutant bunny suddenly hopped onto a vine and let out a cry, indicating the presence of intruders.
Bai Qingqing stood up and flew down from her wicker chair. She crouched down and frowned when she saw the footprints left by human military boots on the soft soil covered with fallen leaves. Upon closer observation, she estimated that there were about five or six individuals, likely a small human team.
She rarely killed humans unless they harboured ill intentions towards her. She would only choose to retaliate in self-defence.
It seemed that she had been hunting with her little companions for too long, resulting in the boldness of these humans who dared to invade her territory.
The dense forest and towering trees obscured the sunlight, casting a dim shadow. Humans were wary of both the forest and the sea, fearing being killed and devoured by monsters. These people must be quite audacious to venture into the forest.
Bai Qingqing dispersed the mutant plants and animals and strolled into her courtyard, where she could hear the voices of the humans conversing.
“Look at these things, flashlights, ovens… Someone lives here?”
“A person living in the forest, aren’t they afraid?”
“We didn’t encounter any mutant animals when we entered. Compared to the survivor bases, this place is much safer, like a secluded paradise.”
“You guys… sigh, what’s this?!”
“Damn! Scared the shit out of me! She’s a freak! Actually, she placed a corpse here.”
Bai Qingqing raised an eyebrow. She had taken out the corpse from the Virus Research Institute in the City of Death, but it was bothering her in the space, so she had locked it away in a dark room. Yet, these people recklessly discovered it.
These people were highly alert. As soon as she approached the front of the house, several guns were pointed at her head.
“Who are you?” The leader took out a pair of glasses and carefully examined her. “Human.”
“Boss, she… she looks a bit like…” One person trembled as he pointed at Bai Qingqing and stammered, “She is… she she she…”
The man beside him scoffed, “Haven’t seen a beautiful woman before? Can’t even speak properly.”
“No, no, she…” The young man was extremely excited, shouting loudly, “Didn’t you realize she looks exactly like the person the leader is looking for?”
The group of people froze, staring at Bai Qingqing intently. The leader took out a drawing from his pocket and compared it to Bai Qingqing.
Indeed, it was true. My goodness, she was the girl that the leaders of the base had been desperately searching for.
Bai Qingqing smiled gently. “You guys barged into my place, rummaging through my things and pointing guns at me. Is this how the Snowfield Base’s superhumans greet each other?”
The leader pushed aside the guns of the two people next to him and stepped forward. “It’s a misunderstanding, Miss Bai. We didn’t mean to disturb you.”
Bai Qingqing snorted coldly. “Restore everything you messed up, and I can offer you a cup of tea.”
The leader quickly ordered his subordinates, “Hurry up, didn’t you hear Miss Bai?”
The dumbfounded men immediately returned to the house and skilfully tidied up the things that were scattered around. There was a broken cup on the ground, and the young man quickly kicked it aside, hiding the fact that it was intentionally done.
Bai Qingqing looked at the five superhumans in Snowfield Base combat uniforms and took out a few chairs from her space. “Please, have a seat.”
There weren’t many superhumans in the post-apocalyptic world, but they had heard of them and were not surprised. They sat down and watched as she took out more things from her space, gracefully pouring tea for them.
Bai Qingqing held a teacup and looked at these excited superhumans. They must not have had a proper rest in a long time, their tiredness showing on their faces.
“Who is your leader?” She remembered that in the original book, the leader of the Snowfield Base was Shen Mingxuan, but now he had turned into a zombie and couldn’t possibly still be the leader of the Snowfield Base.
The leader replied, “Our leader’s name is Liang Zhiyu.” He took out a drawing from his pocket and said, “Miss Bai, he instructed every superhuman on missions from the Snowfield Base to carry this drawing and search for you all over the world.”
The young man who recognized Bai Qingqing interjected, “Miss Bai, why don’t you come with us to the Snowfield Base? The leader has been searching for you for a whole year. He misses you so much that he can’t eat or sleep properly. This year has been tough on him, and we feel sorry for him.”
The other men rolled their eyes in their hearts. It sounded as if only our leader had been searching for a year, as if other base leaders weren’t frantically searching for Miss Bai.
Every superhuman in each base had an unspoken mission to find Bai Qingqing’s whereabouts.
A whole year, a year in the post-apocalyptic world where changes happened every day. They hadn’t given up searching for a year, and people thought the few leaders were either crazy or sick.
Perhaps there was no Bai Qingqing in this world, only their imagination. The superhumans couldn’t find her, so when they suddenly saw Bai Qingqing, they didn’t recognize her and couldn’t believe they had found her.
Bai Qingqing knew in her heart that these men had been searching for her.
She was pleased with the outcome, proving that her efforts in conquering them were not in vain. It probably wouldn’t take long for her to complete her mission.
Bai Qingqing held the hot tea in her hands, and the rising white mist blurred her beautiful face, making it difficult to see her expression. “I am friends with your leader.”
She paused and asked, “The zombie activity has been frequent lately. I want to know… the news about Fu Chen from the Jingzhou Base. Do you know anything about it?”
The faces of the people changed slightly. The news of Fu Chen’s death had spread throughout the major bases half a year ago. Human superhumans were grateful to Fu Chen for his great contribution to humanity.
If it weren’t for Fu Chen taking Li Jin to the City of Death and desperately protecting the most powerful virus researcher, humanity would not have had any hope.
Fu Chen, such a strong individual, was heavily injured by zombies and died at a young age. It was a pity. If Fu Chen hadn’t died, humanity would have had a greater chance against the zombies.
“Miss Bai, Fu Chen is dead,” the leader informed her in a deep voice.
“Bang!” The teacup fell on the table, shattering into pieces, as if her heart had been torn apart.
Bai Qingqing looked at them with a pale face and said hoarsely, “Are you lying to me?” Fu Chen couldn’t possibly be dead. She had heard from the superhumans themselves that Fu Chen was rescued and brought back to the Jingzhou Base. How could he be dead?
Everyone could see that something was off with her. A pained expression appeared on her face. The news was cruel, but it was an unchangeable fact.
Bai Qingqing lowered her gaze, disregarding the scalding tea dripping onto her body. Her hands trembled slightly, and her mind felt muddled, unable to think clearly. Breathing became difficult for her.
“You all can leave. I want to be alone for a while,” she said, enunciating each word.
The people hesitated, looking at her, and then left the room.
They stood in the yard.
“Boss, why do I feel like this Miss Bai likes Fu Chen?”
“Be confident and disregard that feeling,” one of them hooked his shoulder, saying, “She’s so heartbroken, it must be because of him.”
“But she’s like this,” the young man looked troubled, “What should we do about our leader?”
“Fu Chen is dead, so of course our leader will go for the beautiful lady.”
The young man grinned, understanding the reasoning. After all, how could a dead person compare to a living one?
Inside the room, silence enveloped the space. Even the sound of tea drops hitting the ground could be heard clearly. Bai Qingqing felt a chilling coldness spreading throughout her body, as if she had fallen into an icy abyss. She shivered uncontrollably.
Her eyes turned red, and tears fell like pearls with broken strings.
It must be a lie from those people. Fu Chen couldn’t be dead. If he died, her mission would fail, and the system would have already deemed her a failure.
Before she could calm her pounding heart, she heard the cold notification sound from the system.
“One of the main characters, Fu Chen, was successfully conquered half a year ago. The characters that have yet to be successfully conquered are Shen Mingxuan and Liang Zhiyu. Please continue to work hard, Host.”
Bai Qingqing froze, feeling as if the heavens and earth were collapsing. So, he had completely fallen in love with her half a year ago.
She murmured softly, “It’s impossible…”
“Ding, detecting Host’s emotional breakdown. Please repair quickly. Please repair quickly…”
Bai Qingqing’s heart ached, and she felt incredibly sad. Memories from the past flashed through her mind. “Brother…”
She was still used to calling him “Brother Fu Chen.” As long as she called him in a soft and tender voice, he would bring everything to her.
Even if she acted particularly spoiled in the team, he would indulge her and treat her like a precious treasure.
“Host still has unfinished missions! Please repair your emotions quickly!” The cold, mechanical voice kept reminding her.
Bai Qingqing’s eyes stung, and she curled up in the reclining chair, crying with a broken heart.
